While minecarts are definitely cool, I've yet to find a real use for one. The inventory is large enough and since it's stuck to a flat track, it's not like it can follow me around all over the damn place jumping up and down all 9000 ledges I come across while mining.
I find that the only purposes of my minecart as of yet is simply for the purposes of vanity.
What do you guys use em for and how often do you use em?
I don't know, I havn't made a minecart yet, but I have a question:
So you put the ore in the cart, and make it run to the other side of the tracks. Then you have to follow it back? Wouldn't this mean you'd need two tracks next to eachother for long runs, and more tracks for longer runs?
Pushing a cart only makes it go a few blocks before you have to push it again. It's basically just a chest that you can bring with you into the mines, at the moment. It would be useful if we actually needed so much stuff that we couldn't bring our materials back in our inventory...
It's pretty useful if you're going to spend a lot of time mining, though I wish there were crossroad, t-tracks so I don't need to destroy the current track and rearrange them.
Guys, come on... Notch adds a mine cart, in the ALPHA version, as something that only shows what would be possible and you already make threads like this? It's like spitting Notch in the face, minecarts will most likely change a lot, be updated many times to come and will most likely be(come) way more useful in beta.
Something I was going to use in my adventure dungeon was a minecart to trigger a pressure plate. Turns out, minecarts won't trigger plates... Which is really really weird considering that the moment you get out, *you* trigger the plate. Empty minecarts also fail to trigger it, despite clearly being heavy enough.
I use minecarts for transportation. If your base is on top of a mountain, you can make tracks down to lead you a short distance to another base. I have several bases, just because I can.

If steam engines, like in my suggestion thread, were added, it'd make minecarts a LOT more useful.
