I love hoppers and I love how they finally added them, but they have been implemented very awkwardly and they could be better. I had some Ideas how to improve them.
First Idea is pipes, they would be used to connect hoppers to a storage unit or to provide a place for items to travel. This would look less awkward then connecting a bunch of hoppers together. It would also use less materials, and give a purpose to any extra hoppers lying around.
Pipes are definitely necessary, as for the moment Items can't move upwards with hoppers only downwards and horizontally. I wouldn't see the point in criticizing the idea, only suggesting a better implementation seems reasonably to me.
My second Idea is Shredder Hoppers they would be used as a way to store exp. The way they would work is that when, any mob/animal/player falls into the Shredder, the Shredder would add more exp to fill up this bar with an item slot at the end of it, every time the bar fills an exp bottle gets added to the item slot and the bar resets.
These three Ideas have been removed because you guys don't seem to agree
I want it to be understand that when doing creating this, you need to remember it won't function when you're away from the spawner, but also the bar doesn't have to fill quickly it could take longer than levelling up manually by maybe four times.
This isn't OP for the following reason, when using this machine you will not get the mob drop items, which still leaves room for those creative lava and water contraptions people love.
Third Idea Trimming Hoppers they would be used for turning plants into seeds and saplings etc. For example you could put in leaves and you would get a sapling, or you could put in wheat and you would get 4 seeds. It's a safer way to use your plants so you don't accidentally run out plus it saves a lot of time.
Fourth Idea which is the Destroyer Hoppers this idea may have been suggested before if it has just tell me and I'll take it out. Basically it acts like a safer lava or fire for items, you can have this just in your home and you drop your garbage and it gets destroyed. However I thought of a twist that when items are destroyed the hopper has a chance of spawning a mob out of it. Tell me what you think about that.
Fifth Idea is the Trap Hopper it would work like a trap chest, so when an item goes through it sends 1 redstone pulse from itself if 2 types of items it sends 2 all the way up to five from which point or earlier you can put a repeater, I'm sure there are many creative things people could do with that. I'm not sure if this is otherwise possible somehow with redstone and the current things in the game but if it I can remove the idea.
I just had another Idea that when it rains Hoppers collect the rain and pour from under and if there's a cauldron under it, the cauldron fills up with water. The same could apply for water that is above it and also lava, but the lava could only burn you for a few seconds with the drops, because it can't fill up or add up, a nice way to add showers in the game I think.
The pipes are unneeded, use hoppers for that. Dinnerbone said he doesn't want hoppers to store xp. as a trade off for automation. Redstone hopper = hopper + comparator, therefore uneeded. Destroyer hopper can just use a hopper connected to a dropper next to lava, unneeded again. And the trimmer hopper seems kinda stupid.
I don't like the idea of being able to set up an EXP farm at the cost of an iron sword. I wouldn't particularly mind a Vanilla void pipe...but the thing is that you get less random junk with vanilla than other things. Trap hopper might be useful, but cauldrons are useless anyways. They're only useful in the Nether, where you can't get water source blocks, and since it doesn't rain in the Nether, the water hopper has no use period
How much damage does the shredder do? The trap is pointless- you can make one by connecting a comparator to one. The destroyer is also pointless. The trimmer is just weird and OP.

pipes are the only thing i support. past that, the rest of the post looks like one of my attempts to extend the idea with "stuff to appeal to more people". the problem here is, it is not a extension of the idea, but it is actually the main idea. and for that, no support for the main idea

I'm pretty sure bumps are against the rules, since people I know have gotten infractions for using them. The pipes are unneeded, use hoppers for that. THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH FOR THE FEEDBACK! I will revise my post and you guys can judge on the changes
I'm pretty Bumping after a day of no replies is okay.
Hoppers only go down wards, you can't move items upward.
Shredder I assume would kill them at the rate of getting hit by an Iron sword I guess.
As for the pouring Idea currently there is an awkward way to control water flow which is with pistons, It's clunky and difficult to control but it works, what I've done is I've suggested a controlled form of water flow which also collects rain and works with lava. It has the Redstone machinery put into one block, with the combined purpose of a cauldrons collecting water. I hope that clears it up.
As for Dinner bone apparently saying that he doesn't want hoppers to collect exp which from following his twitter intensely (almost to the point where it is creepy) I haven't seen what you seem to be talking about, though I guess I agree with people saying that is seems.
While I still think the destroyer would save space I agree It's kind of pointless. I also think the trimmer isn't that useful I just wanted to include because it added variety and at the time it seemed interesting.
I'm pretty Bumping after a day of no replies is okay. Nope, still the same as bumping, which I'm still pretty sure it's against the rules.

This is a different situation, that's exp from a furnace something with a purpose, being lost due to movement of items. However I do acknowledge the fact that both things involve a storage of experience however perhaps due to the way I chose to suggest it, may subdue him to consider it, either way I'll leave it there as I think it has enough disadvantages to be fair.
Benefit:
Stores exp automatically
With some rate kills Mobs
Disadvantage:
Destroys mob droppings/loot
Four times less efficient experience collecting
Before denying an Idea, and suggesting it in a different form, try to think which would make more sense, and which would look extremely awkward.
Try telling that to Jeb. He will say something like "Droppers work just as well, so why should we bother adding pipes?" Or "Just install a mod."
I'm pretty sure, but I don't have a source, that Jeb stated they weren't going to be adding pipes to Minecraft (may have been at Minecon, but I can't quite remember).

Clearly you don't know what Jeb is like, so don't make stuff up.

1. If you don't have a source don't bother mentioning it, two do you think that in alpha they ever had plans of adding a dragon? The situation is different with hoppers. Either way, I'm almost sure they will find a way to make items travel upward in an easy way not the hard way.

Please don't suggest me to mods, especially when you know it's against the rules to say there's a mod for that in this section of the forums.

You basically just put down all of your ideas...
Also, a dropper pointing upwards into another dropper is a method to move items upward.

No matter how much you beg, you aren't getting pipes.
Pathological lying is a symptom of being a sociopath, so you can drop that, as to everyone else there are difficult ways to do everything but saying that makes it sound like there is no such thing repeaters, droppers, hoppers, and even pistons. Those are simpler ways to do things that could have been done before implementation. I strongly disagree with you guys but respect your opinions however something in the form of a pipes needs to be added for upward item travel. Funny how people don't realise hoppers are in fact a weird poorly designed pipe.

Please tell me how to make a makeshift piston or hopper without actually using pistons.

UPWARDS...FACING...DROPPERS.
Funny how people don't realise hoppers are in fact a weird poorly designed pipe.
Ad hominum attacks are against the rules. Good thing, all I said was fact, not directed at anyone.
Please tell me how to make a makeshift piston or hopper without actually using pistons. You pick an item up and you move it over, or you take it out of one chest and put it into another.
UPWARDS...FACING...DROPPERS. You can't say that and
Everyone knows that. Say this, because If they are poorly designed flipping them doesn't fix the design, it just creates an extremely awkward method with many issues, including difficult sideways travel. Just think about how it would look.
Dinnerbone has said that mojang will not be adding pipes.
Droppers were added partly because you are able to transfer items upwards with them.
Please show me.
And as for that are you kidding me? I get arguing if something has two opinions that can be debated but when someone has clearly accepted yours and explained how there's doesn't effect yours, It gets extremely annoying when the person pretends to ignore everything else.
I'm clearly blind so you tell me which one is more simple.
Are you saying that, "Pathological lying is a symptom of being a sociopath" was not directed at, say, the person you quoted?
You could not possibly make an AUTOMATED piston contraption (eg piston door) without pistons. You CAN make vertical item transport without adding in a new "pipe" block.Oh, and DON'T try to tell me what I can and cannot say.
