So why not just allow the ability to sit down on steps and slabs?
So you think anything that is more than one color is ugly? Do you think your avatar is ugly then, as it's not just one color? Wouldn't it just be easier to make a couple more kinds of signs if it matters that much, then to make dozens of new items, which already existing items could be used in the same way?
I play on a RP server where shift and right clicking on steps makes you sit down on them. It works. No need to make a whole new item then aply this ability to it, when you can do the same with existing items. It just seems so unnexcessary to have oak steps, spruce steps, birch steps, jungle steps, then add oak chairs, spruce chairs, birch chairs, and jungle chairs.
Sometimes too simple is bad, but too complex can be even worse. Just add the ability to sit on steps, and easy solution. And if not, is it that crucial for you to be able to sit down? These new chair items would be mainly used for aesthetic reasons anyway. Just like how steps are used now.
Also, stonebrick steps as chairs, I don't think that would look ugly. It would look uncomfortable.
One, where the hell did you get that I think multicolor = ugly? I never said that, nor do I think that. I was pointing out that while oak stairs + signs = a nice chair, jungle stairs + signs = a slightly worse looking chair because of the color design clash.
Two, I know what you're referring to; I've had the fortune to see that plugin at work. However, that's a PLUGIN. Is it that hard to understand I'd like to be able to do this in vanilla?
Three, adding the ability to sit on stairs, while a fix, doesn't change the fact that furniture would be nice to have.
Four, "it's just for aesthetics and therefor shouldn't be added" is a TERRIBLE argument. If it's just for aesthetics and that makes it not worthwhile, we should go back to only oak wood and only oak-colored wood products, remove all trees but oak trees, remove all wool, in fact remove sheep because without wool what do they do, remove pigs too because cows drop food that restores the same AND they drop leather, remove cracked, chiseled, and mossy stone brick, remove chiseled and pillar quartz, remove different leaf types...We don't need any of those, they're just for aesthetics. Goodbye to all of that and bats because they don't function except to move around and squeak.
Five, on how "crucial" it is, no, not really; That doesn't change that it would be nice. It wasn't crucial to add a ranged weapon to the game, but they did, because it's nice and it adds something. There was no real NEED to add the Nether or the End; They weren't crucial to the game. The overworld offers plenty of land to explore and develop. But it was a neat idea and it brought a lot to the table. In fact, survival mode isn't crucial to the game. We don't really NEED anything more than to build neat structures and share the ones we're most proud of with the community...But I don't see any of those things being removed or talked about as if they aren't crucial, because they brought something to the game, as well as they've been around a while.
Six, I don't know what you have against this. I'm not the first to want real furniture. The point of this topic is to suggest chairs and tables and couches and windows, not to suggest how we can fix existing blocks to make them act like chairs and tables and couches and windows. You can put things on a table; You can't place crap on a pressure plate you put on a fencepost. It's NOT the same.
Question: Would Carpets they act like paintings? And could I put things on them?
Hm...I'm between them as slabs and them at the same type of block as the thinnest snow. The snow-style would make more sense, though, so yeah, I guess they'd work as a painting-style thing.
I like the idea of furniture in general, but overall I find this particular suggestion disorganized and overly-complicated. Frankly, there have been many other furniture suggestions over the years and some of them much better (with images no less).
I'm not going to step through the whole suggestion item by item, but I'll make my own quick assessment:
1) Tables are good, chairs are more complicated then necessary.
2) Blinds, plates, etc are pushing it, but I wouldn't argue against them.
3) Carpets are a neat idea (which has been suggested a number of times before), but have technical issues which prevent a good implementation.
4) The sewing machine is a terribly over-complicated and an unnecessary idea. You could have the same functionality without adding a new construction block. Furthermore, the idea of add a bunch of sewing machine "accessories" is even worse.
One, where the hell did you get that I think multicolor = ugly? I never said that, nor do I think that. I was pointing out that while oak stairs + signs = a nice chair, jungle stairs + signs = a slightly worse looking chair because of the color design clash.

I already said the ability could be added in Vanilla to steps and slabs.
Three, adding the ability to sit on stairs, while a fix, doesn't change the fact that furniture would be nice to have.
We already have items that look and work like furniture. We don't need duplicates. Using the existing items allows for more customization. You can have different colored chairs. You can use signs, item frames, or even trapdoors as arms. You can put these on slabs to make a longer looking couch without taking up more room. You can make dozens of different looking seats. We already got the aesthetic appeal. Though it would be neat to be able to sit down on them, which could be added, it is not necessary. I only see sitting being somewhat useful on roleplay servers.
That wasn't my whole argument. My whole argument was that we already have many different chairs and couches that can be arranged with what I've just said above. To add chair-specific items isn't necessary. I think you are over-reacting on this. We have dozens of different chair designs available, but if we just had oak, we would only just have one log. You are comparing dozens of already existing designs to just one block, so I believe it is you who has the terrible argument.
Also mossy and cracked bricks seem so useless, at least in vanilla, as they hardly look any different. Though they allow for better texturepacking with more unique looking designs, though most people don't seem to do that.
Five, on how "crucial" it is, no, not really; That doesn't change that it would be nice. It wasn't crucial to add a ranged weapon to the game, but they did, because it's nice and it adds something. It's "nice." Oh ok, I thought it was "mean" until you said it was nice. You also don't need to play the game, or need to play on the computer. Uh, where are you leading this to?
Six, I don't know what you have against this. I'm not the first to want real furniture. The point of this topic is to suggest chairs and tables and couches and windows, not to suggest how we can fix existing blocks to make them act like chairs and tables and couches and windows. You can put things on a table; You can't place crap on a pressure plate you put on a fencepost. It's NOT the same.
But you can put things on an extended piston with its arm up. You can put the base of the piston in the floor so it isn't as tall. Looks just like a table. You can put all your pots or whatever on it. You can place many pistons for a bigger table. You can even place a sticky piston or two if you want to make it look like someone spilled something on the table.
I believe you have a weak argument. It's not the blocks; it's how you use them.
I assume you missed the disclaimer at the top of my post, about not giving me that line about how it doesn't fit the game. Let's be honest here; Minecraft is a SANDBOX game. You're supposed to be able to do ANYTHING. Anything! Not anything but if you want to do a lot of things use mods. I'm suggesting this because it shouldn't HAVE to be a mod-only feature.
On the subject of mods, sometimes the reason a lot of mods are made for a feature is because that's a popular feature that people want, which makes that part of your reasoning FOR my suggestion as well as against it.
@Mapcritic, because wool carpet ties into other creations in my suggestion, and because not everyone wants a flammable floor. You ever played a raid server? Best materials to use are obsidian and enchantment tables. I'd like to have my high-defense base, but still have it look nice, and having carpet instead of wool blocks means you're not as close to the ceiling of your base, which helps me feel not claustrophobic. Also obsidian is expensive when shops sell it, which means just carpeting it I can make my base only 3 blocks of air between ceiling and roof, and again - not feel claustrophobic. It's useful, I have a reason, and it ties into other parts of the suggestion. Is that enough of a reason to be okay with it?
@Everyone, I would love to hear what theme minecraft has that you can manage to conflict with. I really would, because I've read that line in a fair few forms many many times over. "It wouldn't fit the theme of the game." "It's unMinecraftlike." "It wouldn't fit in with other parts of the game." "This doesn't work with Minecraft." A few times it's been explained and I can see why that makes sense - a few others I've even agreed with it. I don't see how furniture could not "fit with the 'theme'" of minecraft, though. Something that truly doesn't fit in the game wouldn't even be a mod.
I don't support your suggestion because I don't want to, because you write in your post that every argument for unsupporting isn't right.
And if you think that everything should be implimented to minecraft because it is a sandbox game, so lets impliment all the annoying mods that no one want and say that minecraft is a sandbox game and FTW.
The furniture that we have now, is quite enough for me.
Every item that you suggested, can be built with the stuff we have in the unmodded minecraft.

I think you totally missed the point, man. I never said "Lets implement EVERYTHING! YEAH!". That disclaimer means that, due to the game being a sandbox game, no suggestion should be shot down because it "doesn't fit." You should have a different reason than such a cop out response. If the furniture we have now is enough for you, that is you - not everyone.
I support furniture and anything else that can be used for internal decoration. Only so much i can do with a few signs, pressure plates and fence poles.

I see you have no response to my previous reply..
Furniture isn't an unreasonable or unfitting idea for Minecraft. However it is redundant as we already have the blocks to make a lot of this furniture already.
Steps/slabs for chairs with signs, trapdoors, and item frames.
Fence with pressure plate or extended piston for table.
Steps/slabs for shelves.
Upsidedown steps as a small desk.
Cauldron for a sink or garbage bin.
Etc, etc..
These items allow for so much customization with furniture. Not all chairs will look the same. There are different table designs. As I said, adding specific furniture blocks is redundant and would make everything look the same. There are different wood types, but we don't need a spruce boat, a birch boat, or a jungle boat, which would be things we can actually sit in, for example.
A long time ago I did wish for furniture blocks to be added, but then I went on some servers and was amazed at all the different builds and furniture people were ble to make with the existing blocks, then I changed my mind. It's more fun to allow customization and to improvise with items rather than being handed an item and being told "This is a chair and only a chair." Instead you can have steps used for chairs, stairs, and roof tops, with sign arms which can be used as signs as well, or item frames as arms that can also be used as item frames, or trap door arms which can be used as trap doors. THese existing blocks allow for more customization and actually have a different use outside of decoration. A chair block would just be a chair block and nothing else.

Try using different steps and slabs, pistons, and nether brick fence. You can actually make a lot.

My last post in this topic wasn't directed at you, and that's your opinion that it is more fun to customize with multiple blocks. It's mine that a single block you make is better. Neither of us will be bending to the other on this - so how about we agree to disagree?

I've just been giving lots of examples. Adding in dozens of items that act as furniture and only furniture is just redundant as we already have ways to make furniture of existing blocks that can also be used in other non-furniture ways, and that is why I am against this idea.

Your "we already have this" logic is failing.
We already had wooden pressure plates that could detect items, why do we need golden and iron pressure plates?
We already had wooden pressure plates that could detect items, why do we need golden and iron pressure plates?
How so? Please explain. Just saying it is doesn't mean anything.
Your argument fails, and I will actually explain it. Actually, all I need to do is post a quote from the wiki:
"
A weighted pressure plate is a block similar in function to regular pressure plates, except only items can activate them, and the number of items on the plate determines the strength of the redstone signal emitted. The weighted pressure plate comes in 2 variants, a light version (gold) and a heavy version (iron).
The light version emits a stronger redstone current for every 4 blocks thrown upon it. It reaches maximum signal when it has 57 items (7 items short of a full stack) upon it.
The heavy version emits a stronger redstone current for every item stack thrown upon it. It reaches maximum signal when it has 598 items (9 full stacks + 22 items) upon it."
Weighted pressureplates have a different function than wooden pressureplates. They are not used the same way. Unlike how steps can be used the same way for chairs, or for the roof tops. Wooden pressureplates are activated by items and characters/mobs. Weighted plates are only effected by items, and have different charges depending on how many items are on them.
Another snippit from the wiki:
"Wooden Pressure Plates are triggered by a single item, effectively making them Very Light Weighted Pressure Plates. However, they are also triggered by mobs and arrows, unlike actual weighted pressure plates."
EDIT: Yoru argument fails even further as I have never said we needed weighted pressureplates. I believe your argument is invalid. I actually said I wouldn't mind a few more colors of certain items for even more furniture customization, just not dozens of furniture blocks that can only be used as furniture. That's a one-way street. So I believe you have done nothing but further strengthen my point.

No, sir, my argument prevails. And seeing as you can't put two and two together, I'll do it for you.
You say we don't need the furniture items galax is suggesting to add to minecraft because we can make most of them with blocks we already have, such as a tables being made with fences and pressure plates, making the suggested furniture redundant, and therefore and invalid. I'm not trying to say that they are not redundant, that would be subjective so arguing would include biases and opinions, I'm saying that redundancy of a suggestion does not equate to the impossibility of it being added.
Let's use you claim's fundamental logic that mojang has has never added anything redundant for other items in the game, such as wooden pressure plates and weighted pressure plates. There are many more (further lowering your credibility) but we'll use this one for now as it is more simple than other examples.
Wooden pressure plates can detect items. Weighted pressure plates are used specifically to detect items, making the two plates redundant. However, mojang decided to add them.
You said that Mojang (sh/w)ould not add these because they are redundant, yet mojang has added plenty of redundant items, meaning you argument has lost major credibility and has not in any way undermined Galax's suggestion.

You make an invalid argument to back up your invalid argument.
The pressureplates have different uses. Wooden pressureplates, stone pressureplates, gold pressureplates, and iron pressureplates each have a different use, and aren't just for aesthetics. However, furniture-specific blocks would have no function, and would only serve for aesthetics. Though I argue we have blocks that allow us to make furniture, which each piece has its own use. A sign can be more than just an arm for a chair. A step can be more than a seat. A piston can be more than a table. A "chair" block would be a chair and a chair only.
If you are going to argue redudant items in Minecraft, try actually listing some, instead of listing things that actually have different uses. Telling me I am wrong does not make me wrong, you have to prove it. You can't just wave your words at me, acting like you are right, to be right. You were wrong about the pressureplates. You were wrong. I can say this as I can back that up. The plates have different uses, unlike how you pretended they didn't.
I assume you missed the disclaimer at the top of my post, about not giving me that line about how it doesn't fit the game. Let's be honest here; Minecraft is a SANDBOX game. You're supposed to be able to do ANYTHING.
Some new furniture options couldn't hurt but I'd really be fine with just a proper table. The pressure plate tables are nice but I'd like to be able to place a flower pot on my table.
That being said, you don't get to decide what criticisms are or aren't leveled at your ideas.
And "sandbox" does not mean "you can do anything" nor has it ever meant that.
You make an invalid argument to back up your invalid argument.

I support gas pockets in MC (see thread in Suggestions)!
More like, a working example. I also don't get points if they're nonsensical, so no.
