A tool that's somewhat resource heavy that is used to break obsidian, glass, ice, and other things that you'd consider to "shatter" much faster than anything else.
Since it's a rather durable tool, durability won't be penalized if you use it to do anything else. It'll also take out more blocks before breaking. A great all around tool, that breaks stone, ore, wood, and mobs faster, but not as fast as using the proper tool. Although it can't really dig, so git yer shovel. Hitting an enemy will knock it back further than a sword would. It could possibly be used to destroy vehicles (when they're implemented) faster.
Maybe it could drop a plank/cobblestone/iron ingot/gold ingot/diamond when it breaks.
Ideas derived from discussion:
It could be given a windup before starting to break.
Hmm, I could see hammers as being a new tool, though that particular pattern is already used for shovels, might I suggest using a 3 stick handle, with the material of choice on each side like a T?
[iron] [iron]
That way the longer handle could be make it more of a sledgehammer. Also personally I hated having that one odd stick out when making a set of tools from the 1 being used on sword :tongue.gif:. As for your shattering, would that mean the hammer would destroy the block outright in one swing? It would make sense with sledgehammers, though to make it so its not a pickaxe replacement I would say to make it not leave behind a block to pick up, since you could say the thing was crushed. Perhaps to balance out the extra durability a slower swing or cooldown could be implemented? Or perhaps if the hammer's material is below the target, say wood vs iron, or stone vs diamond, it would have no effect, but still lose durability.
Not trying to hijack your suggestion or anything, just attempting to flesh out the idea as it is playing in my head.
No, that's fine. Different takes on the same ideas only serve to make it better.
I'm suggesting the two stick approach with a solid block of the material to make it a bit harder to craft, but it's useful for a variety of things. Besides, having to use two blocks would be too much. It could appear as if it's a sledge hammer, but it's best if it uses one unit.
And the idea is to make it slower than the pickax when using it on stone. Cobblestone is just small stones placed together, so yeah. Maybe it could drop gravel, but then that's sorta useless sans flint.
It's more durable in the sense that it doesn't take the -2 penalty for the wrong use; the hammer would be a wide use tool ('cept digging, just wouldn't work), and it specializes in making things shatter. I wouldn't say one swing (maybe the diamond hammer) but fairly quickly. Maybe a stone hammer takes out obsidian in 15 seconds, compared to a stone pickax's minute.
Ah, I see now, didn't notice that each of those was the more solid version of the material before, i.e. iron block instead of iron bar. Yeah, 2 solid blocks of iron would be pretty steep for a tool, the pattern I laid out was made of the mindset of iron bars and sticks. The 'dense' tools idea is pretty neat though, and would explain the high durability.
The slower swing/cooldown and the 1 hit shatter I mentioned would probably be better described as a "windup" time before the swing itself, giving the hammer a more hefty look to using it rather than the rapid bashing of current tools, but that probably cant be helped. Perhaps a slow over the head lift of the hammer, with a quick slamming down.
If the swing was slower, but the damage to the block was faster, it just seemed like it would be a more efficient replacement to the hammer. If there was a gimmick, or 'downside' to the tool though, like in your mention of hitting cobblestone with it might get you gravel instead of cobblestone, would be an interesting twist, a manual "erosion" of blocks, like in the erosion threads where > > > balancing the faster block destruction with a "degrading" of the material returned .
That crafting set up is already set for the Shovel
No it's not. Take a closer look. USE THE POWER OF OBSERVATION.

The thing is, that the current system works continuously, maybe a small windup would be in order, so it's more fit to tearing down continuous wall.

That would be interesting. Maybe hammers could leave blocks damaged, but not broken. When used on stone, it turns it into cobble stone before breaking. Two hits for each stage.
Like so:
But doing this, the durability for it would have to be increased compared to the old system, which works on blocks destroyed, whereas this would work on a per hit basis. I think it'd be better to just have a windup.
How about potential uses as a weapon? It could require you to stand still during the windup, making it an awkward weapon to use(as a hammer should be), but absolutely devastating damage-wise.
I think this would be a lot of fun to use. If it had wind-up, instead of cool-down, the feeling of using a sledgehammer would be present, and it would still be easier, although not necessarily faster, to break blocks like this. Having to only click once to break a block means less actual effort/concentration needed...
I think it would be neat to click once, and then have the hammer start to swing, and then finally destroy whatever block you happen to be looking at when the time comes. So if you click and then move too quickly it hits the wrong block.
(If block damage was saved, instead of resetting when you let go of the mouse, this would allow for some blocks to require multiple hits for strong materials)
I wish block damage could be saved.
That would enable use of siege weapons, bombs, ranged wall attacks. Etc.
To be used it hypothetical PVP action. As the walls would degrade. Etc.
+1!

Maybe a small hammer?

[] [] [] maybe even a crafting tool?
I think the hammer idea is great, I've always been a fan of heavy warhammers^^
Maybe different weapons like arrows, swords or hammers should have different efficiency against different monsters even. Hammer, like in most cases, the slowest, but deadliest of the types.
I like the idea that the hammer would be an alternative means of destroying certain blocks, but wouldn't leave blocks to pick up behind. This is not to say that I don't like the rest of the ideas in the thread, quite the opposite.
I certainly hope that one or more of these ideas are implemented into the game; I really would like to see some new tools added.
Also, as long as we can dye the hammer black, I would LOVE this idea. If not, I would merely be friends.
Obsidian hammers....?
Anyway, seems like a great idea. Strange how many people didn't notice the blocks, and also maybe there just shouldn't be a stone one to make it harder to get... I mean really, diamond pickaxe speed killing your enemy's obsidian wall with a (smooth)STONE tool.
