While running around in an infdev save, I came across this:
After picking my jaw up, I immediately got up closer to check out the black rocks in the water. I attempted to mine it, which didn't go so well. I'd really like to see some kind of obsidian fragment that could be used to make tools. The Aztecs used obsidian rock in their weapons to make knives and spears, and I think it'd be cool to see obsidian rock usable in tools like swords, axes, and arrows.
You know, obsidian was, historically, often used to make arrowheads.
I'm really starting to like this idea.

The inquisitors were torturing Harry.
First, Ignatius used the rock.
Then Billy asked Harry if he wanted to read his BDSM blog. Harry was so surprised that his pants flew right off. He was wearing women's underpants. The inquisitors were wearing them, too.
The idea of using obsidian for tools is mostly a bad idea, the stuff is really sharp but is fragile, something like high damage low durability would work, as much damage as dimound but only as durable as wood
Obsidian would make very sharp tools. As VBitz said, high effectiveness but low durability would make sense.
Obsidian would make awesome arrowheads though, since the lack of durability doesn't matter. I can see it as being a very-high-end source of arrowheads. Considering the extra effort needed to get obsidian, this would work well.

Currently, obsidian us ridiculously hard to mine, even with diamond picks.
I doubt obsidian is stronger than steel in real life, so the durability of obsidian will need to be lowered first to meet real world expectations.
THEN it could be used as a high effect / low durability weapon.
Although, I think having a unique purpose for obsidian would be better rather than adding a whole set of tools. (e.g. arrows, floating islands, rituals?)
I have often thought that flint should be the low-tier arrowheads, and obsidian the high-tier arrowheads. This doesn't make all that much sense, perhaps, since flint appears to be able to be just as sharp and hard, but it is trivial enough that the more common and easily collected Flint may be acceptable as a low-grade material.
I think it would be awesome if once obsidian may be used to make floating islands, it could only be mined by golden pickaxes.
Personally I think most of the crafting and building magic type things should be done with obsidian and gold. Both are rare and have low durability, making it a high tier, and difficult to maintain. Not to mention it would give them much greater value.
Also I greatly support that suggestion about arrowheads.

Agreed

"So we step away from the mainstream and live like vagabonds and common dropouts. A psychedelic rhapsody for someone just like you."
The more generically useful a resource is, the better. High power/low durability tools as one potential use for obsidian, rituals as another, arrowsheads as yet another...
They don't all have to be GOOD choices. An obsidian pickaxe is probably extremely silly. However, the more options you have for your resources, the more choices you have to make about them.Spending resources should have an opportunity cost.
I like the healing spring idea! As for the rest. Since I think it is SO hard to mine it should have a better use than high damage low durability. It would suck for it to break so soon.

But that is an amazing sight

They realized that they were all men of the lord.

A simple suggestion on geology here.

Slaves of the Coal Mine
An interesting Novel to pass the time.
More tools would be neat but imo not really needed.
only one version of bows or arrows makes me a sad panda.

For instance, from a birds eye view, arranging obsidian like this:
[iron]
and then placing a water spring where the Iron is would cause it to be a hot spring, healing the player for 1 health every 3 seconds.
