Got the idea while reading a thread about auto-fires, people said lightning would be sweet so I'm making a thread for it to be discussed.
Lets say like once every week in minecraft it gets really cloudy and slight rain, then overnight it gets more intense more rain and thunder sounds - then, the next day for probably the whole day? its very intense lightning and thunder sounds with heavy rain.
Well the once a week thing was just so it would happen offten - i guess it could be randomly chosen from like out of 25 days 1 is a thunderstorm..and yeah the rain should collect in holes, like if theres a pot hole, that should fill with water. then drain after the storm.
[iron] :soil:------->------ ----->---- [iron]
DURING RAIN -after--
[iron] = air
= ground
= water
yeah the diagram is kinda wacky but you get the idea
sounds like a good idea. make it a 1 in something chance that it will rain on any given day and when it does it will cause trees to grow faster and flowers to grow randomly.
Storm: 1/10 chance of occurring each day/night. (1/5 chance in spring) If it occurs during the day, sunlight is dimmed, and monsters are still able to spawn. Storms only cover a single "map area", and not the entirety of infdev. (So an area a little larger than the largest map in indev)
Lightening: 1/3 chance of occurring each minute in a storm. Lightening strikes a random 1x1 block position on the map. The block it hits gets destroyed. If it hits a player, they take 9.5 hearts of damage. If it hits a mob it dies. All adjacent players, mobs, and flammable blocks get set on fire.
Tornado: 1/100 chance of occurring each day, 1/20 chance of occurring each storm. Tornadoes shift or destroy nearby blocks as the pass by them. The tougher the block, the less likely the tornado is to shift/destroy it. If tornadoes pass over players or mobs, they pick them up, and then drop them from high up, potentially doing a lot of damage.
Rain puddles: 1/3 chance of occurring every 10 seconds during a storm. A 1x1x1 block of water forms in a random, empty, outdoor position.
Cold day: 1/5 chance of occurring in Autumn each day/night, 2/3 chance of occurring in Winter each day/night, 1/20 chance of occurring in Spring each day/night, 1/100 chance of occurring in summer each day/night. On a cold day, all outdoors, top layer water is turned to ice. If you have a storm during a cold day, the rain is white, (so it looks like snow) and all outdoors dirt and grass blocks get turned into snow blocks. After the cold day ends, snow blocks have a 1/3 chance of turning into grass blocks, and 2/3 chance of turning into dirt blocks. Rain puddles can not form on cold days.
Warm day: 1/20 chance of occurring in Autumn each day/night, 1/100 chance of occurring in Winter each day/night, 1/5 chance of occurring in Spring each day/night, 2/3 chance of occurring in summer each day/night. Water is twice as likely to evaporate, using tools takes a bit longer than normal, and storms can not occur.
8bit, your ideas are made of pure sex. +10 internets to you, good sir!
Allow me to contribute a few extra ideas to the thread.
Hail: Has a slight chance of spawning ice blocks that 8bit mentioned randomly in a storm area.
Tornadoes should be able to break any glass they pass directly over. Tornadoes that hit a cobblestone base with windows would probably not affect the cobblestone, but the glass windows would all be destroyed and there would be a chance that chests inside could be broken and entities tossed around. Same goes with loose entities, a tornado should be able to toss them around or even pick them up and carry them. Tornadoes could also destroy leaf blocks on trees, leaving just the trunks.

8bit's idea is really quite awesome. I'm not sure how ice will work (does it look and act a bit like glass?) but the fact is having all those weather events would be awesome. Except for one minor detail, and that's tornadoes. I think they should destroy certain types of blocks all the time instead of having varying chances. Opulous has already raides this point.
Also, if weather's put in might I suggest an eclipse weather-type event? The sun or moon (but probably the sun) changes appearance for a short period of time, during which the whole map gets much darker. This could have a chance of happening or operate on a schedule perfect for convincing foolish natives that you can blot out the sun.

Perhaps a solar eclipse could cause massive mob spawns on the higher difficulties too! Some kind of curse is taking effect, or a mad scientist's plot has come to fruition, etc. :laugh.gif:

oh man i can see it, i wake up and go outside only to find that the forest has no more saplings or wood cause it was burned down by one block of fire caused by one block of lightning

yeesssss
YEESSSS.
Still, rain, thunder, weather, seasons.. its all planned we just have to wait for it. Just how cool it will be, we have to wait and see.
I like the idea of eroding mountains and waterfalls created by rain.
