Agreed, strongholds need these improvements it makes them look more abandoned and mysterious. I liked all the rooms except the armory it looks a little too dry.
I've always thought they needed a throne room. I only think there should be one stronghold per world, though.
My strange suggestion is that the portals should have a direct need for something from the Nether. Otherwise, there's no need to go other than to get a plain ol' mob drop that isn't even very rare. Something really big, like the Nether Star, should be required to go to the End, IMO. Perhaps a drop from the Whither.

My short story-like journals; quick-and-easy reads:
I been playing for about a year I a only found 1 stronghold and it had a massive mineshaft in the thing that made it so the whole area was a big mix of tunnels...it was a big mess so I have never tried to find one after that because it just was not worth it.
I have been making massive strongholds since beta using MCEdit to cut and paste many existing strongholds together into a gigantic complex. So I fully support the idea of having them spawn in game.
Apart from all the wonderful ideas mentioned (more rooms, traps, aboveground entrances, sewers etc) the one thing people cannot agree on is numbers. So, add sliders during game generation for:
- number of strongholds (3 minimum?)
- size of strongholds (small, medium, large, huge)
- populated or unpopulated (or both)
- traps (yes/no)
I had a stronghold generate in the middle of a cave. It was a nightmare to navigate, and I ended up getting killed (though only because my sword croaked). I would love all of these, especially the stongholds overwrite all other structures. A big support from me.

A +1 for you, sir. I like all of these ideas. Make a stronghold more of a dark maze of rooms build long ago to last the ages, rather than a mess of stone stuff underground slopped together messily. The library rooms are impressive enough, why not add other things to make it more interesting? More loot would be nice as well, not necessarily better loot. I think I would find more chests of refuse, broken swords, garbage, and trash thrown away by the original occupants that I do in our current strongholds.
Agreed. Currently, they just get annoying roaming around really maze like hallways... I mean, seriously? i found one with 3 jails once...
I'd like for some to be more than a usual stronghold, like with towers and a throne room or something so it looks as if it's a castle ruined by weathering and erosion and has gone through the process of burial. Also age of the stronghold could factor into the shape or condition. And the newest could contain non-playable characters. There is my wall of text.
Yes. Strongholds should feel more like they were built impossibly long ago, and there should of course be more than one. Also, they really need much better loot. I mean, hell, you just spent what is most likely a very long time finding it, might as well make it worth it.
This thread has been great, I've decided to make a small non-infinite custom survival map, and I decided hey, if I'm making alll the terrain myself why not do the structures. The village was easy enough, but this thread has alot of inspiration for making something a bit out of the ordinary that'll be really fun for players to explore. I'll post some pics of it once I'm done.

I've just finished the stronghold, in it's pristine form. I still have to mossy/cracked stone it and add cobwebs and spawners/loot, but here's the top-down. You might recongnize the layout from the main post, I copied it
What do you think of the large rooms, I know this kinda looking stronghold would be hard to randomly generate, but I wanted to add some even more end-game functionality to it.
Top left is the "Wizards Study", it has a enchanting area minus the actual table, some brewing stands and an ender chest.
The big room up top with the red carpet is the Treasure Room, what I decided to replace the throne room with. It has a victory monument to complete by raiding 4 dungeons on the map, and a few display cases.
In the middle is the dining room/mess hall, the rightmost is the dormitories, to the left of that is the armoury and on the bottom is the blacksmiths (Damaged anvil, furnaces, iron ore and some coal blocks)
In the library is map fragments of the surrounding area (Not nearly complete, really patchy) and some hints on hidden areas.
While it's certainly no randomly generated stronghold, I like how it turned out (Even though I still have to add a roof)

When i see the throne room, i thought about bowser, and your throne room looks pretty grand with the red carpet. Who says u r a bad architect?
Back to topic, i do agree with having more rooms especially the dining hall and the barracks, cos now theres seriously no room for exploration. I only gone into a stronghold once cos i wanted to go to THE End, but after that i never went back.
A stronghold is the lives of the ppl who once dwelled there, who depended on it. there certainly must be more stuff in there!

Plus, there is already an (old) mod that forces the stronghold to generate after other features (caves, ravines etc) so this is entirely possible (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1350464-15fishtacos-mods-fps-lava-decay-fog-key-and-more/). And there was an even older mod that made huge villages and massive strongholds (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1254299-125-larger-structures-v14-with-sandstone-stairs-and-biome-adapted-villages/).
