Why not both? If gryphons knew how to fish in the wild, surely they would know that when domesticated too. The player could use my suggestion to survive and your suggestion in pvp or pve to replenish the health of his mount. Teach a man to fish and all that you know?
Edit: Removed the quadruple post. Dang internet!
yep. both. how much better can a fishing gryhon be?
answer: get a gryphon farm, prime tnt next to a lake, fly the grphon into/over the lake, tnt explodes. blast fishing. (lol)
perhaps if you get dismounted, (i've seen that knockback could dismount) your gryphon would dive and try to catch you, if it get to you in time, it would grab you with it's talons, and fly you safely to the ground, or glide to a mountin top or something.
About picking up gryphon eggs, first off, I would think you'd need to pad whatever you use to pick it up (who would just shovel up a fragile egg with hard diamonds?) I also think it might be interesting if you have to carry it by hand, meaning no breaking or placing blocks, and maybe walking a little slower while holding the egg. Just thought it was an interesting thing to suggest so I don't really care if you like it or not, but if so that's great and I'm glad I could help.

Please take the time to at least skim this topic before thinking it's overpowered and stupid. That's how I felt at first but this guy quickly showed how good his idea is.
To balance this thing I think there should be a limited flight time (just go high enough to get out of skeleton range and you can go anywhere at night. Nighttime should be dangerous or spent in structures.).
Basically your gryphon would have a "flight bar". When completely drained the gryphon can no longer fly upwards and flapping their wings would only slow their descend. When not flying the flight bar will slowly fill again.
I think this solves a lot of issues in terms of nighttime flying, getting into enemy bases and having a severe mobility advantage over others. That and I don't think flying infinitely is very realistic.
When there is a limitation to flying (in terms of flight time, not in terms of difficulty) support, otherwise no support.
Just kidding! Support, all the way!
(above image can be accomplished with summon command, ride command, and invisible pigs.)

You know, Wallabies are kind of like pygmy T. rex deer.
But you balanced it out really well, and it would be really fun. 1.7 would be a great time to add these, with the new biomes and what not.
Also, many have wanted a red dragon, but this would be a great alternative. I almost wish this was a mod so I could use them right now
BRB...gonna tweet and beg to Dinnerbone
