How is this an improvement to the current method of cobblestone generation? An efficiently-designed cobblegen is only 1x3 blocks, so your design doesn't seem to offer a compelling advantage.
As for the obsidian generation element, this is only an advantage over existing methods of creating obsidian in that you don't have to harvest the obsidian block if it comes from your Generator - your idea consumes a lava source block, just as does the current method.
I think a better idea for crafting obsidian is a recipe that combines a water bucket and a lava bucket in the crafting grid to get an obsidian block and two buckets back.

I have to agree. Making a new block for this when one of these is already easy to make in infinite amounts and the other is supposed to be challenging because of it's awesome protection and use in Enchanting. But I wouldn't mind this method of crafting Obsidian. It requires 2 Buckets, and would be kind of time consuming to mass produce (as well as annoying going in and out of the menu repeatedly). But then again, I still see no need to implement this.

There could be something called a "Generator" which allows you to create cobblestone or obsidian without taking up a lot of room.
Here is how it would work:
1. When you right click on it, the gui will appear. To create obsidian, you would place lava/water buckets like so:
For cobblestone, it would be the opposite, with the lava on top and the water on bottom.

Here's a graphic for it though, feel free to use it in the OP.
