The only reason that mojang has not put in beds with custom colors is that, if each of the separate wool colored one part of the bed, then they would need to program and individually texture 4096 different beds
Yes, the numbers you state are absolutely impossible. That's why I attempted to posit a version that didn't have individual combinations, but rather added a texture (blanket) across a base, and possibly a color layer on top of the texture itself.
I confess I don't well understand the distinction between blocks and entities, and it's at least possible that what I'm after is either outright impossible in Java or else the sort of thing that creates massive lag while somehow leather armor and banners are possible and don't create massive lag. But it's not because I somehow overlooked combinatorial arithmetic. I tried my best to posit a version in which the actual number of individual units is LOW (4 blanket textures and possibly 6 base textures) while their combinatorial possibilities are HUGE. (Then I extrapolated a couple ways this low-investment-high-yield combination system could be bumped up a bit more, such as letting the player color the stripes separately... again, like 1.8 banners are doing right now, so it can't be that difficult to set up a two-part pattern where each part gets a different color, and we're left with a grand total of 5 blanket textures, unless you wanted to go crazy and make a different texture for each of the 16 plain colors, in which case it's 20. Not 24,000. Just 20.)
ETA: Oh, I see what you mean about different parts of wood coloring different parts of the frame. No. I am not after that. I am after one coherent frame, which can be recolored to a single wood style at a time; the initial bed frame is chosen from the majority wood in the pattern or else the wood with the lowest, what, metadata? So if you use Birch, Jungle, and Acacia in your pattern, you should get a Birch bed, upon which you can then throw a blanket in any of the say 20 (at the high end) textures in any of 16 colors (or 16x16 if you have colored stripes), which, again, are controlled by an overlay, just like with banners or armor, so it's still just one of a handful of patterns, only affected by the effect of "coloration."
I'm after the same wood changes for most wood items, too. Not a bookcase with a lot of distinct wood sides here and there and everywhere -- just a bookcase you can shift to Birch or Acacia or Dark Oak, and all the wood parts shift at once. The main place I want to see a difference is some sort of wallpaper like Kaevator designed, which is just applying a texture to a surface.

I'll never really understand why people want this. All this does to me is take up chest and inventor space and be really annoying. Guess its a preference thing.
Sometimes I think people pay more immediate attention to joke, troll, vague, and wrong section threads here instead of the actual proper suggestions.

Ok, that makes a lot more sense. I can actually see that happening in the future, as the banners were created to test that new style of layered crafting, with each recipe putting a new layer of texture over the existing. I can actually see that same thing happening in beds as well, same style but different patterns. I completely forgot about banners, but their rendering system could make that whole suggestion completely possible.

Yup, that's what I'm hoping for.
There may be a hard limit, because as people have explained to me, there's a distinction between blocks and entities, and it may be bad to make beds into entities, and/or it may be impossible to make that style of decoration work as blocks. But it opens up the possibility, where before there was none.

Great logic. No.
What? That makes even less sense. If you don't want to clog up inventory space, then DON'T USE IT. It's very simple, and you're not making much sense. Great logic? Of course I wouldn't use it. Why would someone want to suggest a creeper that destroys everything? If you're mad at the hunger games thing, then maybe the owner would only allow oak items to spawn.

I know it may seem half-valid, but I think it's unacceptable to use 'don't like don't use' regardless of the topic or suggestion. It is a standard silencing tactic, similar to "it can be optional," in a way, but more subtle in execution.
My response would be that if it's bad, it doesn't matter whether it's optional to use or not. If it sucks, I'm obviously not going to use it, but I also don't think it should be there to begin with. Kind of how I feel about the current effort vs. return concerning fireworks.
In my mind, this mod must be done anyway, even if the 1.8 did it. Why?
Cause **** the 1.8, **** all the BS they made, let's stick in 1.7.10 and continue to make minecraft better, making that version better than anything they will do later.

This is not a mod. It's a suggestion. And 1.8 wasn't that bad.
The only reason that mojang has not put in beds with custom colors is that, if each of the separate wool colored one part of the bed, then they would need to program and individually texture 4096 different beds, which also means that beds alone would nearly quadruple the amount of data values given to blocks in the game, which would make adding new items after this very difficult, and that's not counting if they included changing the wood on the beds. If there were only the 6 wood plank options, that would increase the number of custom beds (which they need to individually program and texture) to 24, 576. And if each of the three wood, like the wool, colored different parts of the bed, that puts the number up to a ridiculous 884, 736, which is more than minecraft could ever cope with, let alone programming each of those individual data values for the beds, as well as the texturing and individual crafting recipes for them all. Also, using the different patterns you suggested on your thread puts those numbers up to 16, 384 for non changeable wood beds, 98, 304 for single wood beds, and 3, 538, 994 for beds with three different planks per bed, and adding your proposed blanket and bed frame combination would double all of those numbers yet again to 32, 768, 196, 608, and 7, 077, 988 respectively, which is just impossible.
4096 beds, really ? False.
Do we have billions upon billions of banners block IDs ? No. One bock id, some metadata, display the right way, and voilà.
Beds could just as easily be the same.
As for making wood items using different woods we already have almost this. The game could simply need to "determine" which item to craft based on let's say the most used "compatible" ingredient, and in case of a tie, use the ingredient that appeared first. Say you use 3 oak on top row, then 2 birch (with a space in between) and 3 jungle on bottom row, then you'd get an oak chest because oak tied with jungle but appeared first in the recipe.
After all this time, I still don't support:
Multicolored sticks, because I hate the idea of sticks that can't stack and are colored because... everything else is colored!
Multicolored chests... I absolutely hate it when I only have 2 kinds of logs, and only just enough to make 1 chest, and the other chest must be another color. I don't want to go out and hunt for more logs just to have a balanced-looking chest
Multicolored crafting tables.. I simply enjoy the old crafting table texture. It doesn't interfere with anything to me.
I'm honestly one of those that thinks all planks should be the same color. I hate wasting space for different log types, fences, doors, planks etc.

I like the idea of dyeable wood mentioned earlier although it's kind of hard to "dye wood" in real life.
I do not support this idea as we already have enough wood variations that can be used for different things, just make a texture pack with the wood colors you want and go crazy.

You know, like how they've had to texture 12.3 million forms of leather armor and 809.57 quadrillion individual banner designs. Individually and by hand and not, you know, letting the computer combine distinct patterns like computers are so good at doing these days.

Most of this is in the game in the form of Gany's Surface and vanilla.
