My friend and I had the idea that Magic staffs might be a decent addition to minecraft. How they would work is you make the Staff (using three sticks in either a diagonal or straight pattern). Then you use different ores to add the strength and durability to the item. So the better the item the stronger the weapon.
With that done it works like a weakened sword, so you can use it as a straight blunt weapon just hitting with it. Then if you combine certain items you can create bolts or charges that are fired like arrows. Different items give different effect to the weapon
Ice charge - Works like a slowing potion makes the mob or other player slow
-Made by combining say snowballs with a slowing potion
Fire charge - Sets enemies on fire
- Can use the current Fire charge
Lightning charge - Acts as a weakening potion
Poison charge - Poisons the enemy
-Made by mixing rotten flesh with fermented spider eyes, or possible addition of a venom sack droped by spiders
Obviously the idea is not perfect, and may need some new items added into the game to make it work. However i feel it would be worth it to add another ranged weapon to the game.
Perhaps each staff should be a specific element in itself so it can only fire those charges, so if you have a heap of different charges in your inventory the staff wont know which one to fire. Still have the charges so you have a limit to how many shots you can make.
The fire one out of blaze rods and redstone
The ice one out of sticks and diamonds
The lightning one out of lapis and obsidian
This would make the staffs more valuable, and make it so each has a set power like the bow at full charge etc.
Mabye you could change the recepies for the staffs:
Unenchanted Staff-two iron ingots; used as a base for all staffs
Staff of Flames-unenchanted staff and a fire charge; sets targets on fire
Staff of Chill-unenchanted staff and an ice block; encases targets in ice, slowly dealing damage while freezing them in their tracks
Staff of Lightning-unenchanted staff and gunpowder; lightning strikes target
Staff of Poison-unenchanted staff and spider eye; poisons target, obviously
Also, make it to where they lose charge with use (like how tools get damaged), and you can refill their charge using an anvil (like how tools are repaired).

And by the way, vanilla Minecraft technically already has magic in it, because of potion brewing and enchanting.
That Sounds like a good idea, i was looking at the mod after posting this and found one that uses a similar system, i cant remember its name, but how it worked is you made just a straight staff and then used certain items to give it powers. Also i agree with the potions and enchanting point and that was exactly what we were thinking when we had the idea. There's always room for improvement

It should be harder to obtain a staff though.
1. Better Terrain Generation (face it the terrain gen is boring)
2. More Melee, and Ranged weapons (e.g Mace, Flail, etc and e.g Crossbow, blunderbuss, musket, flintlock pistol etc.)
3. More hostile and friendly mobs
4. better village generation (i hate seeing villages intersect with like mountain biomes and stuff it looks bad and takes ages to fix)
5. More Generated Structures
