So with the Redstone update we are getting, we are also getting a new ore: Quartz. With quartz, comes new redstone mechanisms. There also comes new possibilities for ores and the like. So I have a few suggestions for 1.5 (or future) content that would fit with the theme somewhat.
Onyx Ore: So currently, the only thing a diamond pickaxe is truly good for, is for mining obsidian. Obsidian is the only thing that cannot be mined with an iron pickaxe. I think this somewhat devalues diamond, at least in mining, as it's much cheaper to use an iron pickaxe. So I suggest a new ore: Onyx Ore. It would only be mined with a diamond pickaxe. It would drop the ore block, similar to iron or gold, and would be smelted. The Onyx itself could be used to make some new mechanisms, for instance, a spike block, or for a zipline of a sort.
The Onyx could also be formed into a Block of Onyx, in order to have a black block other than black wool. Since Onyx is also easily dyed, it could be dyed with certain colors, to be a metallic version of wool. Black onyx could be enchanted, which would act as mob repellant (this comes from beliefs that hold Onyx as magically protective.) Onyx Blocks could have slabs and stairs.
Onyx Ore itself would be found occasionally in patches of Quartz Ore in the Nether.
It would look and spawn something like this (Yes, I know it's ugly. I was lazy.)
Really. The only difference is that Diamond lasts a lot longer and is a little bit easier to enchant. I find myself using mostly iron, since it's much more common, and I don't care if I die and lose it. Not to mention I didn't say it wasn't as useful as iron, I said it's more convenient to use iron.
I like the idea! I support this due to the metallic-version of wool you stated, it would be nice since wool is easily flammable and not resistant to explosions. I also like the zip-line idea, but I think if there was going to be s spike block one should be able to make it out of iron. The zip-line could be used for easier transportation in the Nether.
While I like the idea of onyx ore in the Nether, I don't agree with your uses for it. It seems like you came up with the idea for the ore, and uses for it as an after thought.
If you give some unique use for this ore that makes it highly prized, but not overpowered or overshadowing of other content, then I'd support.
Maybe an onyx golem that chases away, but does not attack, mobs or something? Building on your mob repellent idea. I don't know. As it stands though this suggestion needs more thought.

The purpose of a diamond pickaxe is to last a long freaking time. This makes enchantments much more valueable just because they last longer. Even if you're only using it on cobblestone its still a good pickaxe.

True. But that's its only benefit. Would you ever actually need a diamond pickaxe in the Nether? No, but with Onyx Ore you would.
Now that I think about it, the Nether does need something besides Quartz, I also like the idea of it's "metallic wool" quality, like Itkdog897 said.
One question though, would it be used for a new tier of tools? (I'm praying to God you're going say no.)
Ok, I lied, one more question, would you use it to make armour? I'm thinking maybe, actually, but for a diffirent reason.
Onyx Armor could be dyable, like the block itself, and leather armor. This would be like an upgrade to dyable armor, making it last about as long as iron armor. Anyone get what I'm saying?
Support, maybe it could craft a torch similar to the interdiction torch in EE2 although it would need some balancing perhaps it can only repel the living but the undead are attracted to it. For example, Zombies and Skeletons will be attracted but Creepers and Spiders will be repelled.
I like the thought of attracting some mobs and repelling others. Support.
Serious: I think this is a pretty cool idea, could be helpful with alot of building plus now we will get 2 Nether ores
onix is way better than steelix.
...just sayin.
anyway, on topic.
i have some mixed thoughts.
GOOD- id say the nether already has 2 ores. (i count glowstone) 2 is kinda... barren. quartz was a major leap in the right direction, but where not quite there yet. another ore wouldnt hurt. i also like how it spawns alongside quartz. very cool! i also support making diamond pickaxes better.
BAD- i dont really like the idea of onyx blocks. wool is all we need. also if there is an ore and a smelted form, the smelted form should be a metal/ingot, and onyx shouldnt be that way. it should just give you an onyx.
IDEAS- i think instead of onyx being formed into an onyx block, it should be made into obsidian with 4 onyx crystals. just think about it. a pretty, black stone with magical properties... in minecraft, obsidian comes to mind. plus, onyx is only obtainable with a diamond pickaxe, seriously, you would still need a diamond pick, and you would need four of them, so its not so overpowered. as for the enchanting thing, i would have 1 of 2 things.
1. potion effects. they could be enchanted to give you potion effects! regeneration, night vision, strength, when used, you would either lose it or get a regular onyx back. when used, you get the effects for the time given.
2. perks. faster regeneration, farther flying arrows, health sapping from mobs, just a few ideas of perks the onyx could give you. this would either wear the enchantment or onyx out, though.
as for the redstone stuff, maybe not. quartz already does that. maybe it could be used for decorative uses? i dunno, just thinking. this is your suggestion though, you should think about this stuff.

That would be interesting, if it repelled some mobs, but attracted others. The behavior is there already, with cats repelling Creepers. It's an AI thing, but not a terribly complex one.
As for more tiers of tools and armor, I really don't think so. Half the purpose of this is to give diamond more diverse uses, I don't think another tier should be implemented, at the very least until the current tools are expanded upon in some manner.
I do like this idea of adding more valuable resources to The Nether, to make the trip worth your time and all that good stuff.
I'd also really like to see black Onyx block counterparts to the white Quartz ones.
This is an idea of what the Onyx ore could look like as well as a Onyx Chiselled Block.
As for dying the block other colours and mob repellent I'm not such a big fan.

Haha, very funny.

Because Onyx actually comes from Quartz in real life.

Yes, I also agree this should be the black counterpart to marble/quartz.

I love it.
OT: Since Onyx repels mobs... Maybe onyx could be used in some wand or something, like a mob warder. Either way, I support.

Constantly evolving, reaching further heights.

You mentioned it might be used for spikes, so here's an idea:
Black dye represents onyx.
