First off I love minecraft and every update is awesome with something new and exciting. I think it would be fun to have 4x4 crafting and maybe eventualy 5x5 or something crazy like that. this is probably an old idea.
But I think that it would be fun to add to that idea by you'd have to defeat a boss to get an item required for that next level of crafting 4x4. and so on with 5x5 so that in away you are some what limited to your progress. until you complete quest style achievement. Also with the expanded crafting sizes it could be like a turning point in the game, like a progression through time coming out of the dark ages in to the stone age with a 3x3 crafting table. moving on to the next age or what ever allwoing more everything. Also I'd make the "cost" or materials required for the next level more substancial or require rarer items for crafting. and certian items have to be made by combinations of lower level items.
with the higher crafting level tie in your actual level needs to be over a certian lvl to craft an item like a diamond sword you may need to be lvl 40 or somthing to craft. where a stone sword is lvl 5.
This could also result in larger interactive items like an elevators is a 4x4 platform redstone powered and with a seperate rail system for moving up and down and require a 5x5 construction and a lot of resorces maybe a steel plate crafted from 4x4 iron ingots then crafted in to steel plates at a certain level requirement. This would also create more crafting options for things like furniture which everyone wants and decorative items.
Either way its a fun game i don't see my self getting tired of anytime soon.
All of that is painfully unnecessary and doesn't fit Minecraft all. No, I don't want these "levels" dictating what I can and can't craft. No support. Just no.
Even if you don't like the idea of level being a factor of crafting (which is common in other games) the Ages is a good idea because it takes away some of the random and adds purpose. There still is the charm of minecraft, if your the type of person that can't wait there is creative. It almost forces you to use all the aspects of minecraft. which isn't a rediculess idea beause even on survival if your playing in peaceful you can't build sticky pistons, TNT, a bow or fishing pole. This is not rediculess to add a boss to seperate ages.
Crafting in my opinion is to easy. In the first tree you punch to death. we'll just say its 4 logs. 4 logs turn into 16 wood planks. minus 4 for your first crafting table. 12 left. you use 2 more blocks to make sticks. 4 sticks 10 blocks, now lets make the most basic tools axe and pick axe and your still left with 4 blocks. in about the first 2 minutes of game play. And how many achievements is that? probably 4. In the next 5 minutes you'll have increased the amount of resources you have to include probably dirt, stone, and more logs. Its not hard... In 30 minutes of game play you could probably have the resources to build half the items in the game. I'm just saying this would help make it more of a challenge to complete anything give your a real sense of achievement. The only thing at this point keeping you going is the infinate possiblities of block placement.
