Currently, the background of the menu stays the same image all the time.
I think it would be great if every time you quit or disconnected out of a world, a panoramic screenshot would be taken, blurred, and then replaced the previous menu image.
How would this work
When you leave the world it takes 6 screenshots. One for each of the 4 cardinal directions, one looking straight up, and the last looking straight down.
And that's it. Not hard, might increase the time it takes to leave a world by a bit, but then the screenshots could simply be in lower quality from the start.
- Update: This would be fully optional, so anybody who doesn't like it could turn it off.
Benefits
It adds variation to the game, and spices up the menu screen by making it more dynamic. Imagine loading up Minecraft and looking up at beatiful landscapes, or endless mineshafts, or castle interiors. The menu would never be dull.
That may start to eat up space after a while (unless say the old images were deleted once you exit the world again and new ones were taken as replacements) but otherwise that'd be pretty cool, support.

I believe each set of photos could be composed of temporary files, replaced with the next batch of pictures. The space taken would only be the total space of the screenshots if that were the case.

Yeah, pretty much what I was getting at. Sounds good.
Nice idea! with the use of temporary files, this would hardly take any power at all. Maybe an extra few seconds to close a world, but that's hardly anything. Support

Since loading screens, now, are quite fast, a few extra seconds wouldn't be annoying. And if one found it to be that, they could turn it off.
Here's the main issue: you're assuming you're going to have some kind of super-epic landscape whenever you quit. Truth be told, I quit more often then not in my house and other small, surrounded places; caves, trees, ect, and almost always standing on solid ground (bad for the directly downwards screenshot). It's not that I disagree with you in that it would be cool, it's that I think you're exaggerating how often it would look cool. Most of the time, the main menu would just end up being weird looking, generally cramped. So I think it would be better as a mod.
