While formulating an adventure map, this idea struck me. What if texture packs could posses multiple textures for a single item, that could easily be chosen by the map creator and would remain the same texture when others used the map. With MCpathcher you can have texture packs with multiple mob textures, but what if this was possible for actual items. Say you had a bow and it had a texture that looked like an actual bow, but it also had a texture that looked like a gun. This way maps would be more immersive and would have more depth. As I said before, the textures would have to be able to be chosen by the map creators some how (they wouldn’t be random) and they couldn’t be client side, in case the map was being played multiplayer. This suggestion is just a mere foundation for an idea so please comments below on possible ways of making this work and any thoughts you have.

Considering that you can modify the strings of playerheads to display different heads belonging to different players, I wonder if string modification is somehow possible with other items. I could be talking about an impossibility here, but I can't deny that it'd be very, very nice to have differing item textures. I'd support this idea in a heartbeat.
It seems like a good idea but i think it might be better suited for a mod than in vanilla.
Well it wouldn't necessarily have to be accessible directly in vinilla, but maybe it could be through something like MCpatcher or maybe MCpatcher itself.

thanks for your aupport, and i will research your idea.
Using the new feature in 1.5, you can give an item a texture and an animation; I will see what I can do, it may be possible to halt the animation on the desired subimage (using a config), although you may have to use NBTEdit or Explorer to push past the other subimages without the animation stopping at them too
I would love to see this in Vanilla, and so custom map users would not have to use mods
I'll keep you posted
If this is possible it would truly make an adventure map much more intresting
This would be pretty useful, but mainly for variety.
Especially if you named the bows different things. Maybe they could make it that you could change how much damage a weapon could do also, with out enchantments. Then you could basically make your own weapon.
