When will Minecraft stop updating? When pigs fly over the frozen plains of hell, twice in a blue moon, while Taylor Swift sings a song called, "Maybe I'm the Problem".
Maybe I should not of made a coment about pig races, as my idea has burst out of control into an argument. I admit, I did not put much thought into my original coment. Yes, it would be unfair if someone had a pig on steroids and the competitor found his pig on the side of the street, but does unfair pig races make genetics a bad idea? Maybe for multiplayer, but in single player I think this would be fine. Maybe there could be an option to disable genetics in multiplayer. I am curious on what you have against genetics with other animals, as it seems that most of what you say against genetics is about the pig races.
It's a good idea, but I think the baby shouldn't always inherent the best genetics. If that were the case, then mindless breeding would always result in a maxed out animal.
Well, other than health, which holds the same issues as with pigs, I said that drops aren't that much of an issue.
As far as sheep go, colors are already passed on, as with cats, just so you know, although if I'm not mistaken it isn't as complicated as this, the offspring just inherit the traits of whichever parent got to the other first.

Are you saying that currently drops aren't a problem, or that you do not mind the altered drops with genetics?
A more apt comparison would be Horse races, where breeding faster horses is an actual part of the business.
So rich people win. As sad as it is, I guess, pig races are hardly something so prevalent that you need to throw out the whole suggestion.
Not to mention, I really. Really. Really. Doubt that there are enough Pig Racing for this problem to even be noticeable.
Yes. Pig racing isn't very common. However there is a chance that genetics might make it slightly more common.
Also, I added a new possible mechanic to the list: the ability for mobs to breed on there own when populations in an area drop below a certain number.
I'm saying it's not an issue. There's nothing about drops that theoretically breaks things.
You have never performed the incredibly amazingly fun action of racing piggies, have you?

No, I have not. If it bothers you that much, people could simply make rules constraining which breeds of pigs are allowed.
I really, really don't care anymore. This is distracting from the central topic.
Anyway, Won't it be difficult to breed Cows for more drops when the only way to know how much they drop is to butcher them?
I just have a few concerns.... Will this make it to complicated.
I understand that the genes and everything, that is not too bad, but, will the processes create lag? How will the animals look, like the regular pig, the regular cow? or will they all look different? Will there need to be specific, and explicit Male and Female Genders.
I do definately like the idea, and it would really open up the doors for special breeds, and stuff like that. So like the example given with chicken herding, You could breed chicken herding cats.
I ultimately, do support this. the other idea, maybe a bukkit plugin?
I don't think that the process will create any real lag. Like it says in the post, the whole process would probably take a few microseconds at the most. The biggest effect it would have on performance would probably be the save file, however it will hardly add anything-only a couple extra bytes of data per mob.
I don't think genders will need to be added, but as for appearance of mobs, most might only have changes in size, while others (like cats and dogs) might have a color change. This would only be a coloration change though, much like how the game can change the color of leather armor now.
Also, their could be a "personal" genetic trait whateva, that could just be how the pig/cow behaves with mobs/player
eg a quirky trait could mean that it behaves weirdly around mobs/player, or if it has a shy trait, it stays away from mobs/player ect ect
Keep the good work/ideas coming!
Like a behavioral trait? That's on there as a possibility.

It would also remove the game breaking xp farms.
And there should be mutations as well.
And with pig racing, just provide pigs that are all the same speed.
Support.
