I've had it with swamps. They were boring in 1.8, but then they were made uglier in 1.0.0 Then mojang said that black grass, leaves and water made them "prettier". The textures are also hardcoded which means that texture pack can't change them.
Before Notch left, the standards were much higher, there was a biome called "swamplands" which consised of green grass and a lot of rainfall. It did't look like a swamp but it was better then the current biome.
I would'nt mind swamps if they were still green. They'd be boring but at least they woluldn't be ugly.
here's a green swamp in 1.8:
Witch huts are dissapointing. Jeb should've added a sort of dungeon like a mage tower. That's what i would've done anyway.
Anyway, that's my opinion. What do you think?
If you started playing Minecraft less than a year ago, it's probably worth checking out this thread:
Swamps aren't ugly, those screenshots only look bad 'cause the biome lines are too sharp and the lighting under the water is buggy!

Swamps are my second favorite biome. They have some open area, so you probably only need to to clear away a couple trees or fill in a little water to build something there, they have mushrooms and witch huts and slimes, and a nice looking leaf/grass color.

If you want the water being brighter in some areas than other, that's not a bug, thats just because the bright water is part of a river biome which has normal water.

I think it's both, you can see in some places the difference between one block and the next is a lot sharper than others but either way my swamps look a lot better than that! The last time I saw swamp water this weird I was using a texture pack that went way overboard with that effect!
No I'm not saying you're using a texture pack, just that your Default Minecraft looks a lot different from my Default Minecraft. Here's a screenshot I just took of a swamp-river intersection in my world, the blackwater thing is still there but it's nowhere near as bad!

They're ugly, but they shouldn't be removed. They just need some working - remove the coded in black grass and foliage color so people could at least change the color of swamps into a more lively green (without mods like OptiFine because some mods/modpack are incompatible with it); same with water, they need to remove "river" biomes within swamps so the water color wouldn't be so inconsistent.

That's how all swamps look like... It's coded to generate "river" biomes (those circles without black water) in swamps (and jungles but less). It's just less noticeable when it's right in front of you.
OP....calm down.
If you don't like swamp and even jungles, don't build your shelter near them and stay away from 'em
I hate swamps too but that just adds another feature to the game and it's less dull that way.
So my answer to your questions are yes and no

Evidence for that?
Vouching for a group of people without evidence is not a good thing to do.
and aren't you a little late on this? 1.0.0 was months ago.

Should they be removed? No, it's nice having a little bit of "ugliness" for contrast.
My only main complaint with the terrain is having deserts and snowy areas near each other.

And the grass color isn't black, it's nice.

And it's nice to have a little flat terrain
