Umm... please remember that this is a SWAMP its not supposed to be pretty.
And just because you don't like it that doesn't mean Mojang should change it, its their game. I recommend getting a texture pack that changes swamp colors.
Swamps are fine. The only thing I really don't like about this is that certain biomes really should never exist beside each other. In fact, the way land generates period is pretty unpolished and annoying. Random patches make for some ugly stuff. The code should be beefed up to build actual land masses like continents with lakes and rivers surrounded by oceans and biomes that make sense being placed together.
Fat chance, I know, and I doubt too many people would agree with me on that.
But as far as removing swamps? Hell no! Don't build there if you don't like them. If anything, they should be kept and MORE biomes should be added.
Mods are not the answer. They introduce bugs and divide the community.
Honestly man, what is this crap? We're not some xenophobic, cloistered hive mind. The minecraft "community" if you can even clownishly call it that, is fractured beyond all reason between 120 different groups of people who repurpose the vanilla game to meet their own ends. This is what PC gaming is about, it is a good thing. Attempting to refute or prove a point with some misplaced notion of common sovereignty is ri-goddamn-diculous.
You do realize that in real life, swamps are disgusting and unsanitary. In fact, Minecraft swamps are cleaner than real swamps.
In real life, human beings are disgusting and unsanitary (smoking, litter, pollution, toxic waste, nuclear waste, ozone depletion, land fills etc.). Where would the world be without them? Minecraft Steve cleaner is than real humans.
Just thought I would add that.
Also, I think that options to select which biomes we would like (or not) in our world creation settings would be most welcome. In this case, more (options) could mean less (or no swampland) and everyone wins. A world entirely without biomes would be a lonely place, naked bedrock as far as the eye can see.
In real life, not all human beings are disgusting and unsanitary (smoking, litter, pollution, toxic waste, nuclear waste, ozone depletion, land fills etc.). Where would the world be without them? Minecraft Steve cleaner is than real humans.
Swamps may be drabby and dark in appearance in comparison to other biomes, but they are wonderful in terms of resources and uniqueness. Trees, slimes, mushrooms and clay are abundant here, and they are a good starter biome for a beginner. Also, only witch huts spawn in swamps, and no other biomes. As they say, you win some, you lose some. There are always advantages and disadvantages in every biome, so stop compaining!
Yeah, tree density in forests is too high. It was better before 1.8 when tree density was random. Now its 5 per chunk.

I never experienced the old terrain generator. So I'll never actually know what you're talking about, and I suppose that's a hole in my arguments. But I'm sure I speak for a lot of people here what I say that I don't think Mojang would have added a new one if they didn't think it was better. So to whoever keeps complaining about how the "good old pre 1.8" worlds were infinitely better than today's,
IT'S GONE. SO SHUT UP AND PLAY THE GAME.

WoeUntoYou. In Vietnam, Arkansas, Oregon and other places I have seen all different colors of foliage and grass. Ranging from bright green to completely black.

OK there's black grass, but you haven't state on the removing-the-hardcoding part.
Sure they're good for resources so I voted against its removal, but I think the grass can be a tad lighter to fit the transition.
I like swamps, it adds a contrast to the land.
The only problem I have with swamps is that slimes are too abundant. I thought it was cool back then when slimes were a challenge to get. It'd be nice if slime spawning in swamps had a spawn rate similar to that of Endermen.

I live in San Francisco, California, I don't know what swamps look like from personal experience. I just Googled "swamp" and "swamp grass," even "swamp black grass" and all I saw was green grass (and some brown, but those look like they're dead), so I assumed that's how they look like. I'd like to see a picture of those swamps you're talking about though, Marv.

Notch, the one who created Minecraft and changed the terrain generator in the first place, basically gave up on Minecraft right after he released 1.8 and gave it to Jeb. He must have a reason to give up on Minecraft, right? Maybe that reason could be because he didn't like how it ended up (this theory is based on the screenshots he showcased - they look nothing like what we have today or 1.8) and is too lazy to improve it.
Besides, we don't want the old terrain back, we want a new one with all of the current biomes in it, but with more diversity, smoother transition between biomes, and better underwater geology. Current terrain supporters like the current terrain better because it has more biomes and structures, while old terrain supporters like the old terrain because it was more diverse, so I don't see what's so bad about mixing those into a new terrain generator.
In any case, since you old-terrain disciples rely so much on polls, the poll has your answer...
Just because someone doesn't like swamps, it doesn't mean that same someone wants the old terrain back, they're two separate things. I like the existence of swamps, but that doesn't mean I like the current terrain better. Two separate things.

I'm just going to say my part here... swamps in real life are gorgeous in my opinion. They did a good job making the swamps in minecraft look like swamps. Whether something is pretty or ugly is a matter of perception. Saying something should be flat removed because you think it's ugly is an ignorant statement.
Also, swamps are smorgasbord of clay and mushrooms. Who would want to get rid of that? o_O
Umm... please remember that this is a SWAMP its not supposed to be pretty.
And just because you don't like it that doesn't mean Mojang should change it, its their game. I recommend getting a texture pack that changes swamp colors.
1) Swamp colors are hardcoded, so even if you get a texture pack you will still have ugly colors.
2) Minecraft swamps do not resemble real swamps. Take this for an example:
Hardly ugly. It's also not black, unlike a Minecraft swamp, and it's very heavily forested compared to a Minecraft swamp.
And, remember that a swamp is not an "ugly evil place of DOOOOOOOOOM", it's just a "wetland with trees". If you say that swamps are ugly and you (not specifically you) think that Minecraft swamps resemble real swamps, you are thinking of a Hollywood swamp and not a real swamp.
Honestly man, what is this crap? We're not some xenophobic, cloistered hive mind. The minecraft "community" if you can even clownishly call it that, is fractured beyond all reason between 120 different groups of people who repurpose the vanilla game to meet their own ends. Have you ever seen the mod Terrafirmacraft? It alters a lot of core aspects and makes the game better in a lot of ways (it nearly fixes terrain and only fails to fix the combat system). You can play all you want with this mod and have fun with it in Singleplayer and Terrafirmacraft servers, but if you see a vanilla server that you like, you'll have to decide between a good server running on a flawed system or a mediocre singleplayer game running on a nearly flawless system.
Thus, if someone wants to play on Terrafirmacraft, they have to find a Terrafirmacraft server. That's one player not playing on a server that requires no mods. Then, take in to account the other game-changing mods and the people who use them (and Terrafirmacraft).
I'll only answer this one. My mind is on the verge of exploding due to anger (due to personal problems)
My philosophy about mods, is they are like band aids, they temporarily fix something that is broken, the terrain is "simplified" so I downloaded the (BWG) mod, so problem solved. Then I solved the emptiness of the world with Mo' creatures, that is two problems solved, then with the absence of new weapons I downloaded the following: Balkon's weapon mod, Forged swords, more bows, and I am thinking of downloading more swords mod. So I solved three of my problems with a few mods, (I still have a fourth problem you see, I can't find a good Arcane/Magic mod, help and recommendations is appreciated.) Since mods solved my problems, I am not whining, and just waiting to see the day that Mojang improves some aspects that I like.
And the community was divided long ago, when the terrain was simplified, enchanting and brewing introduced, and people trying to bend the game to their own will appeared.
I agree. To an extent. Where mods (band-aids) can be applied, they can be applied and can fix the problem to an extent. However, the wound will never truly heal until Mojang steps in and fixes the problem. Such a band-aid can be applied here, where you might just have a problem with swamp coloring (get optifine) and ignore it until Minecraft updates and the mod is outdated or you want to install a mod that is incompatible with optifine.
However, for bigger problems, band-aids simply won't do the trick. With a problem like terrain, you simply won't be able to cover up the problem because it is too big (have you ever heard of a doctor who used band-aids to heal a missing arm? me neither). Sure, you can use band-aids that might fix the problem a little, but you'll need more than just a band-aid to heal this wound.
For clarification: I am actually against removing them. However, they do deserve an overhaul, and if terrain were overhauled and these were removed I would not argue against it.

I know you didn't experience the old game, it's obvious. You dont see people complaining on the forums saying: I've been playing minecraft since beta! The old terrain was sooooooooooo bad man! Flat beaches were stupid, tree density should be the same and hills in deserts! What blasphemy!'. But it's time to get back on topic. Swamps only.
Swamps believe it or not are usually a beginner's first home. You got fast food, you got wood, lot's of caves and that means lot's of diamonds! And the Witch Huts are useful. You can get Glowstone Dust, Redstone, Sticks, Sugar, Glass Bottles and many more great items and potion ingredients! Either way, my comment is done....
Good day.
Caves are generated at the same density throughout all biomes. No advantage. Also, animal spawn rates aren't increased in swamps. Some people have this idea that tonnes of animals like to hang out in swamps.
He's using a texture pack in the first picture. I don't like the way it looks with the texture pack, but I can just refrain from using it. If you want to prove that something is ugly, I wouldn't use a texture pack to do so because most people that are here probably don't use it
And just because you don't like it that doesn't mean Mojang should change it, its their game. I recommend getting a texture pack that changes swamp colors.
