Today I came up with an idea I'd like to share with the community. It is a fairly small suggestion, and I think it won't really disrupt the game-play.
As the title says, my idea is to add the ability for spiders to wear armor.
"Whaa?? This is a horrible idea! I'm not reading this.."
Woahh.. woah. Before you exit this page, please spend your time to read my suggestion. Take a few seconds and think more carefully about it. Hmm... Ah! You know that enchantment, Bane of Uselesspods? Maybe this feature would make it actually useful!
Keep thinking... They would sure look cool, I mean a spider with shiny gold or iron armor would look awesome! What about.. a fully armored spider jockey! Think about that!
Maybe... the spider could have it's own little unique dungeon? That would also be nice...
If you are interested, then please keep reading if you wish. You might find yourself to love this idea!
Introduction:
Whether it is leather, gold or iron, I personally think this isn't a bad thing to add to the game. It was already done with zombies and skeletons, and it worked very nicely.
A few things to understand:
The armor's protection value should be similar to the zombie and skeletons'.
They shouldn't be able to pick up any dropped items and armor. They should only randomly spawn with them. Logical reason below in 'Spawning'
However this might change if the community thinks it is a possibility.
They should only be able to wear chestplates and leggings. Since the mob model is different, the armor sprite of the chestplate should be placed on the abdominal area of the spider, and the leggings would be on their... legs. Well, duh..
Spawning:
The chance of a zombie or a skeleton wearing armor appear is fairly uncommon, likewise with spiders they will spawn rarely. Perhaps even rarer than an armored skeleton.
I was also considering a fully armored spider jockey, which is... Surprise surprise, an armored skeleton riding an armored spider. They would be tough enemies, but would also be a very rare sight to see. It will surely give Minecraft players something to remember in their dangerous adventures.
Upon that idea, I was thinking armored spiders should only spawn when a skeleton is near them. Think of a knight walking his horse, but instead it is a skeleton walking his spider. But I'm still not entirely sure if this will work, so I'm going to let you decide once more.
Along the topic of spiders spawning, I had another idea, a unique little cave which is the spider dungeon.
I created a small and basic spider dungeon. It's a simple, tiny cave with water pools, vines and a cobblestone ruin. I know it's not great, but tell me what you think!
The front of the dungeon.
The back. The spawner and chest are visible.
The night vision potion was used in these screenshots.
Balance:
This idea would surely add more of a challenge to a daily Minecrafter's life. But really, the only challenge in vanilla Minecraft is surviving the first night (Well for new players anyway), but it gets real easy the next day.
Surviving in an unknown world full of strange things and creatures shouldn't be easy, as it is right now.
If armored spiders were implemented into the game, it would also add some use to the seemingly useless 'Bane of Arthropods' enchantment! No more complaining about getting that enchantment huh?
I was about to hate this for lack of logic, but then you explained how a spider would have gotten armour in the first place. Since there is actually some logic to this, I support this.

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...
The thread title saying "Armored Spider Jockeys" would fit better, because everyone's gonna think about lone spiders wearing armor upon reading the title. A decent idea.
Hmmm... Armored spiders would add some use to the extremely useless Bane of Arthropods enchant.(Spiders, Cave Spiders, and Silverfish dont have enough health to really make bane of arthropods usefull, hence why I find it so useless.)
Yes, I understand some players may be afraid of those creepy little critters, and there is no way to change that. This might not be for those who have arachnophobia. Face your fears, and overcome them, is the only thing I can say. Sorry.
I don't think you should bother catering towards the arachnophobic. I have arachnophobia, and I'm not the least bit scared of Minecraft spiders.

Armored Spiders? No way! It'll cause more bad than good.
Look at redstoneoperator's idea. If spiders are heavily armored, they will pounce slower and therefore the player will be able to attack them easier, knocking them back and canceling the spider's attack.
And besides, armored spiders would be appear very rarely anyway.

How do you think an armored spider should spawn? If it would work, they can spawn with a skeleton, spider jockey or two separate enemies. Would be a bit more logical than a single spider spawning with armor that came from nowhere right?
Also, speaking of spawning, should the spider have it's own mini dungeon? Maybe a small cave, throw in a few spider webs, put in a water pool or two and place the spider spawner and chest in the centre? I'll make one of these and post a screenshot when I have the time.

I'd be fine with spiders rarely spawning with armour just like other mobs, it's fairly easy to assume that skeletons gave it to them, although it should be rarer than other mobs.
I'd definitely support a spider dungeon. It should be like a regular cave except covered in cobwebs and wool. Maybe it could even have a small underground building that's been overrun.

I know it doesn't look great, but it's simple and it works. Tell me what you think.

Several ideas by the humble community:
- By RedstoneOperator:
"But they would leap lower with Armor, but Leather Armor, because it's lightweight."
I think this would be neat, and it will make heavily armored spiders to be less of a threat to new and veteran players alike.
- By EL_Kurto_15:
"Perhaps they could also wear helmets?"
I think headgear would actually work with the spider, but once again I will let you guys decide.
Sorry I don't have any pictures, but I'm sure you can imagine it pretty well.
Hope you liked my idea. If you support this guide, please post any feedback or offer me a +1.
Maybe, just maybe, the awesome people at Mojang may add this!
Wait for time
In the break of new dawn
We will never meet
Think I will be on here often? Haha no.
Thanks for the ideas! I added them into the opening post and explained my thoughts.

I don't actually think he read the entire post.
