Clarified a few things in the OP, made the door tier system a little easier to understand and such. Tell me if anything else needs to be changed up and improved to make it easier on the eyes.
I'm not positive, but I BELIEVE that at 1000 views a topic becomes a hot topic. Though it may be 100 posts.
I'm a forum noob. I don't know these things. But either way, we're almost to both of those. So.. Hooray!
Now I'm going to have to rant on the people who think that mobs would be OP.
Seriously. It's bloody SURVIVAL mode! A hollow dirt box with some wheat in it
should not be a sufficient place to survive for years to come. Hard mode is easy.
There's literally NO threat as long as you stay in your house. Mobs stare at you
thorugh the windows, clearly seeing you, then jsut go "BWAAAAAGH" and walk
around confused as if they can't comprehend the idea of breaking GLASS despite
the fact that they'll walk straight through fire and cactus just to deal a patheticaly
small ammount of damage before getting beaten down in 4 seconds.
Seriously. Monsters seem less like unrelenting terrors of the night and
more like braindead idiots who don't quite grasp the concepts of things
like simple physics, spacial reasoning and mortality.

Survival does not imply "monsters exploding your walls every second to get to you".
If you want the challenge, go outside, don't whine that the mobs aren't coming inside to you. You're assuming that mobs are too easy because you're sitting in your house. You're not taking into account the entire difficulty of mobs, just the difficulty of mobs attacking your house.

I have to agree with Neo there. While I do believe that mobs are too easy, I think home should be a sort of resting place, as long as you build it right. And with bot pathing, and the abilities that have been listed here, they should be a more significant threat compared to before. Particularly with Zombies being able to dig, as well as break down your door.

The point isn't about how easy mbos are to beat, it's about how easy the game is in general. Sure, I could
just go outside if I wanted a challenge, but in that case, I might as well just forget about Minecraft and play
some other action game with a decent fighting engine and no building engine. Seriously. When you try
to make a game feel harder by not trying your best to survive, it just isn't satisfying. I wouldn't want a
creeper blowing the front of my house off every 2 seconds, but it would be nice to actualy experience the
thrill of defending my castle from a group of marauding skeletons without opening the door and inviting
them in my self.
However, if you'll notice in the OP, zombies have the abilities to dig through dirt and plank walls if the player is close enough to them, thus calling for extra security against them. Early on, this can be rather difficult to do if you're not careful.

Eh, I'm up for a challenge. Seriously. Add challenge, Mojang!

First of all, your comparison is way off. If you want to go outside and have a challenge, then you might as well go outside. Going to a fighting game is not the correct solution.
And secondly, I'm not saying you have to not try your best. In fact, trying your best makes it harder; which is harder, building a floating palace with fireworks display or digging a 1x3x1 hole and jumping in?
The zombies are not stupid; they cannot break your walls so they will not bother. On hard, they recognize that they can break your doors, so they target the doors. Mob AI needs adjustment, yes. Are mobs as stupid and as easy as people claim? Absolutely not, and it's silly to think so.

Yes, they are. On hard, Vanilla minecraft, i can survive all night on two porkchops and a pair of stone swords actively attacking the monsters on hard.

It's certainly a nice start, though it does need a good amount of work. You don't want to change too much overall, in order to keep the feel of Minecraft, though it's still your idea. Just my opinion. A complete overhaul will just confuse people, I think.
I find it humorous, as this is exactly what happened to Endermen. An uber hard mob, that was a challenge, was added in game, but was too difficult, and had some tweaks. Why? Because people complained. When ever something hard is added, its too hard, because most people actually go out of their homes to get resources, not sit in a cave all day, and build mob farms. Really, you are making the game easier on yourselves, everyone else makes it harder on themselves. And, keep this in the record books, but I agree with what Neospector.
I like the zombie idea. However, a range of 30 for skeletons would kill you in ravines, when your walking across lava to get those diamonds. I do think that this would be a good seperate gamemode, as I too go on survival, build a house, and get really bored because I don't want to go to the nether OR just sit there
Total support. After iron sword and pick(1-2 day) and a stable farm i fear only bosses mobs.
I do have a idea:
Enderman should help other mobs get players for placing blocks to do "stairs" so other mobs can reach a player, also make mobs stay away from hazards like mobs simple walk blindly on cactus or on fire(and in the case of enderman water),also they should teleport to reach player that are out of their reach.
When undead mob(Excluding fire-proof) when they see that the sun is rising they will find cover/water,not just wait till they begin to burn.
Also if the mob can't reach the player they will try to stay away from player's attacks as for killing any non ranged mob is simple:Just build a pillar one-2 block taller than then and they will blindly try to get you, when you can retaliate then without need to worry(Sorry for bad english).
Would be good if spider jockeys have a chane to spawn like this:
10% on easy
25% on normal
50% on hard
personally I don't think monsters are what define survival. yes they need to make improvements, but you're thread is mostly about making it harder, not fix the broken things/ half done things like fishing, mine carts(which they are), terrain spawn (no offense, but I hate when terrain spawns and ruins structures like villages or strongholds.)
My suggestion is change the title. Its more about AI then about stopping new stuff to fix old stuff. (yes AI is "old stuff", but it isn't all the old stuff. more then AI is broken)
now pertaining to the ideas themselves I find them rather bland. Nothing in them is making the game seem better, and changing the creeper does make it op. that charge time is the only way you can fight it. its survival because you can fight back.
really I still think that instead of making mobs come to you make it so you go to the mobs. make travel much more important. Make me wanna get out of my manor (I built a manor, fenced off the land, and lit it up like christmas). I have no need to leave. By this point I'm just slowly farming cows and sugarcane to get books.
The best example I can give you is potato's and carrots. yes simple, but ya know how to get them? kill zombies. personally I want to get those materials so I can have more variety in my food, and so i can make potions. (night vision is amazing).
My other not so great one is netherwart. its only in nether forts, and you gotta travel to get them unless you are really lucky! We need some items top side that will make me travel far away (villages, strongholds, and witch huts having nothing specific to them that adds something special to the game. sure special bricks and trading, but nothing that helps me)
EDIT: I"m gonna re-read this cause I know the feeling. I joined way back in the first beta, and there was this sort of terror in this game which made me so curious about the world. Now that magic is a bit lost since I know the game inside and out.
EDIT 2 : ok really all I can add now is I don't want to sacrifice my house for my safety. the beauty of MC is being able to build how ever you want creative or survival. I want a wooden door cause it looks better with the house I spent three days building (that's IRL days [like I said manor]).
Oh and since you mentioned keeping the old super easy mode intact (as I agree its easy, but I prefer easy while I'm just relaxing in MC. I don't tend to be really serious about it. I've gone hard more once or twice, but that was when I was going for a playthrough meant to be nomadic[which made travel important].) how about it be a difficulty between peaceful and easy. just do peace, easy, normal, moderate, hard.
EDIT 3 : I could even use some suggestions as I've put together that big ol' manor and now I don't know what to do next. I do want a challenge, but honestly at times the most challenge I get is lag spikes or not noticing I'm not regenerating health.
I really like this idea. I don't if I've just been playing a lot longer, but even on hard I find minecraft ridiculously easy to survive in. It's still a great game because of all the other things you can do, but just plain old surviving should be a lot harder than it is.

What Minecraft needs is a better fighting system. I usually get bored sitting around my house with no mobs invading or even making an attempt to get me, so I go outside to fight. Then I quickly become bored due to the horribly simple and outdated combat system which ususaly devolves to running up to a monster and spam-clicking it until it dies without much of a fight. A stone sword is all I really need, but I usualy make an iron sword since it's not too rare and is fairly convenient, but I never feel the drive to go search for diamonds becasue, hey, what's the point? Mobs are too EASY to make diamond armor and tools worth the hastle. And going out to find diamonds is ALSO borring due to the bland caves which are usualy overcrowded with the same few borring and easy monsters, but they simply try to make up for the ease of defeating these monsters by spamming them in your face around very turn...which doesen't work...
because fighting is SO. DARNED. BORRING.

Agreed. I cant change AI yet, but once i have added the items etc and balanced them, and changed mobs slightly, it wont be neraly as easy, but it will still be hard, and once i learn to code the AI, tyhen it will be what survival should be like.
i would think maybe a custom worldgen called "survival"?
I would need someone who can make textures for me btw, i cant do it im too sucky lol
EDIT
Im thinking about adding a brick furnace, said brick furnace will be used to combine 2-4 materials together. (EX: 3 gold dust+iron ingot = golen alloy, same as gold but with the durability between iron and stone)
Also, i have many, many ideas, and i will overhaul all portions of minecraft equally, when i get to them.
(EX: tools, then plants, then ore generation, once i get to it minecarts, villages, the two pet mobs, nether ETC.) Nether might get the most changes.
Nether spider that drops volcanic string..?
To be used in the higher tier stuff such as netherrack/soulsand tools and obsidian tools?
NOTE: The nether will have its own tiers of tools. (netherrack = stone, new ores will be equivalent of iron, and diamond, soulsand will be important in the making of all nether tools)
