Now we can repair and rename enchanted things with a slight cost to our experience. Why can't we make special objects?
It's a basic idea...
Take a bone. Take a stone sword. Put the bone in the first slot of the anvil and the stone sword in the other. The bone will become a weapon as good as a stone sword with sort of a grayish color to it with your custom name, making it a special weapon.
And you could also use this to fuse resources and blocks into one - just think! You could fuse coal and a diamond to make something that can be used as both a good fuel and as something for weapons and armor! You could fuse stone bricks and cobblestone to, by default, make cracked stone bricks (2 of them)! You may even be able to make Extended Level II potions with this. Think of all the possibilities.... A splash potion that shoots fire.... a dispenser with double speed... a cake made of gold....
They will not implement this, it would be ridiculous to code and would require way more item ids than necessary. You can however name an item without enchanting or repairing it. A tool cost fifteen levels and an item costs five. I think renaming is very useful for map makers. Just imagine a compass renamed to "Rift Detector" or potions named "Beer" "Ale" "Whiskey" "Vodka" The possibilities are endless.

I know that, but ridiculous to code? I'm not too sure how to overcome that, but it could, at the start, use a similar mechanic to the item naming in the mod Hack Slash Mine, at least for the names and the coloring. I was also thinking of something like a watch that could slow down or speed up time, maybe a Timekeeper's Watch. The possibilities are close to limitless.

ANYTHING.
What do you think, Minecraft Forums?
