The suggestion is simple, add a wand (or something) to the creative mode inventory. With the wand, you right click one block, left click another, (nothing is destroyed mind you) type in a command and all selected blocks (the right and left clicked blocks) and everything in-between become the block selected by the command. (In the original mod this is based off of, I believe it was //set blockname, with blockname being anything from air to water to lava to bookcase, so the command could be /set blockname)
This would really help the gigantic builds, allowing you to place walls (or lakes, or other things) instead of building the wall one block at a time.
Some things are impossible to build within a reasonable time frame without something like this.
And by world edit, do you mean creative mode?
There is a difference between creative mode, which give you the ability to fly, and have unlimited amounts of almost all the blocks and items, and world edit, which allows you to just simply place a wall or huge lake with little to no effort at all.
I never liked world edit because it supported laziness.
No support
it isnt really that lazy becuase you still have to build a 1x1 tower as tall as you want the building to be becuase you have to click on both corners, you would have to do that with each wall
i think this is a good idea and it should've been in minecraft a while ago
(1x1 tower is lazy but not too lazy)

The point of creative mode is to build whatever you want. On survival, that isn't realstic.
Adding world edit isn't "lazy", it makes the unattainable attainable.
take a good look at this world:
skip to 25:18. The library. It is impossible to build something like this by yourself OR within a reasonable amount of time. With world edit, it becomes possible. Kind of.

I am ninja'd far too often.
Laziness. We wouldn't want that....
It also supports creativity.

If anyone wants to port/remake this, feel free to do that! Or don't. It's up to you, really.
