Tides: When the water raises one possibly two blocks for a short period of the day.
Wouldn't it be interesting to have this feature added? i'm not sure what you could do with it but it would allow for some interesting features in Minecraft such as above water moats and if notch added boats you could ground the boats on the sand or perhaps make a dry dock for repairs to the ship or just plain aesthetic awesomeness to a dock also it would make for some pretty cool reefs and sea battles in shallow water or around a reef. not to mention finding piles of washed up marine life such as whales, dolphins, jellifish and squids. rod fishers that fish on a beach would have to fish at appropriate times of the day. it would certainly be a interesting addition and it would not be all that hard to code.I think!
Is anyone else on the same boat as me? or am I the only one who thinks that this is a good idea.
Thoughts and ideas please!

"He who sees thy challenge shall be victorious."
This would include harder farming cause either the crops will be dehydrated or flooded.
This would include cave flooding that are premade and suddenly flooded, if it's a very connected cave it could either screw up things dramatically or lag you to death. Not even talking about manmade caves.
I would like to point out that only particularly large bodies of water, such as lakes and oceans visibly exhibit this behavior. there would need to be a mechanism from stopping a 1-deep pool from suddenly raising three blocks and flooding a grassland.
that being said, i think it's a pretty awesome idea.

This may be a fad, but I love dragons, so why the heck not?
It would require the terrain generator take into account a variable water level so you don't get bizarrities like valleys flooding once the moon goes over the world for the first time or flatlands near the cost not being tall enough to avoid the flooding. So perhaps a beach on major bodies of water that ends a couple tiles up where actual land begins. But the idea of a variable ocean and a slightly better terrain generator does tickle me in a good minecraft place.
Well, its a good concept, and idea, but I don't think it would work too well with Minecraft. I had a reason but I forgot it so I'll just put random blocks that make me look like I'm explaining something important.
All that rising water would add a lot of lag, I think it's going to be bad enough with all the burning forests in multiplayer
Although I'd like to see sand regenerate along shore tiles, like it would in real life from tides. I foresee a lot of sandless beaches otherwise.
Sortof like infdev currently!
And yeah, this sounds like a technical challenge, but it Would be neat. I was considering ocean waves earlier, but the same problem arises.
if there's a way it could be pulled off, or just simulated, this would be cool.
hm. one thought on the technical aspect is having the ocean level be recorded at one level, and then have the game display it one or two units down, depending on the tide levels, and have the game ignore drowning in the invisible high-tide water when the tide's down... etc. could work with waves too ,maybe?

I like that idea, not sure if it hasn't been suggested already, but I do know when I'm currently playing InFdev, there is NO sand yet... and that would be a great place for it to spawn. :biggrin.gif:

I'm pretty sure no sand or gravel is in infdev yet

wait, when updates come, do we need to make a new map? Does sand and such just appear over what we have?
Do the new trees just appear?
From what I know of how things work, if your old maps work at all with a newer generator, only the chunks that have not yet been cached to the hard drive will exhibit the qualities of the new generator. Basically, if you've been somewhere, it will look like the old map. If you go somewhere new, it will have features from the new generator.
Again, this assumes that your map will load at all with a new generator, which isn't likely.
How isn't it likely?
I think it would be awesome to have something like that, a whole territory without sand or gravel or caves, then suddenly have unlimited caves, huge amounts of beaches.
Though perhaps as suggested earlier in this thread, automated shores.

Well, with the whole game being rewritten and all, I would expect to have some compatibility issues between versions. If you aren't expecting that, then you're going to be sorely disappointed sooner or later.

Dunno how feasable it is though. Imagine the chunk updates.

The rest sounds pretty good however.

This not only sounds lag worthy but it would make everything a bit impossible, especially farming.
"You know Squids are totally going to rule the world once they develop Battle armor for the land"
This. Also, it doesn't need to have realistic gravity, it's minecraft.
Also everything is square. So yeah.
= sand
= sponge
= brick

And now we'll know who to blame when it gets here.

i was thinking the same thing, when he ads water physics too... I hope we dont have to D:
Then again, it wont matter much to me since I'll always be playing multiplayer anyway,
