Clay golems would be buildable workers that do different things for you depending
on the tool you give them. To build a clay golem, put a pumpkin on top of 2 clay blocks.
The resulting mob will look like a clay man with a pumpkin head. He'll just stand there and
look around until you assign him something to do. So how do you give him something to do?
Hand him a tool, of course. Right click your clay golem with a tool, and he'll grab it and walk
off to do his duty. Right clicking him again will cause him to drop the tool and go back to stand at
the spot where you first built him, or the nearest block if the original place is unavailable due to
being blocked or flooded. A clay golem will spend a full 15 minutes doing whatever it's supposed
to be doing, and returns to where it was originally built to drop off the items it collected.
They have 10 hearts.
So, what are some of the different tasks?
If you give your clay golem a pickaxe, it will go off and mine any ore that it can with
that tier, and ocassionaly a few stone blocks.
If you give your clay golem an axe, it will go out and chop trees for you.
It will always search out birh if you give it a golden axe. Note that they will
mine wood at 50% the speed of the player wit hthe corresponding axe.
They're only made of clay, after all, and they aren't miracle machines.
If you give them a sword, they will hunt monsters. Depending on the sword, they will
hunt different "tiers" of monsters. The game will put different monsters in difficulty
tiers for clay golems.
tier 1: zombies
tier 2: spiders
tier 3: skeletons and spider jockies
tier 4: creepers and endermen.
(Creepers are high tier because clay golems will not try to avoid being blown up and will need a
powerful sword to kill them before they blow)
Perhaps agressive mobs would be able to spawn near them and not despawn
or maybe they would recieve a random bunch of goodies every few minuts
depending on tier.
If you give them a bow, they will fight any monsters.
They fire at half the speed of snow golems.
If you give them a map, they'll walk around and explore the area with it until it is filled, then
deposit it and stand arround at their "birthplace"
1) How do they find ores if they hardly ever mine stone?
2) I think they should only hunt passive mobs, that way they are just for gathering meat and other drops, not for guards (that's what iron golems are for).
3) They should have an inventory you can open and only go back to their "birthplace" when it is full or you tell them to. There should be a GUI when you right click them where you can remove items from their inventory but not store items, then one equipment slot for their tool and buttons telling them to "go home", "return to duty", or "wait here", or something to that effect.
4) They should not go after different thing depending on the tool, save for ignoring ores that they can't mine.
EDIT:
5) I really think they need to be more expensive.
Hmmm, a nice suggestion that makes gathering materials easier, but it has a few problems.
1. Golems are not expensive enough.
Simply having a tool and some clay means you can have a golem do all of your work early in the game. Obviously, this means that you can make an army of workers easily, and just sit back and watch them work, making it massively OP. Instead, how would it be if it was changed to something along the lines of an emerald golem? That way, you have a more expensive all-purpose worker, and another use for emeralds that you may or may not ever use.
2.Golem Limit
While the same can be said for dogs, you need to have a limit on the number of golems you can make per player, otherwise one could overload the server/client if they got their hands on enough clay.
3.What they collect
A problem I see with this is that there is no way currently suggested for deciding where the golem mines. If something like this is not added, it may mine your house, somebody else's house, or just ruin a whole world altogether. Perhaps placing a red wool block on the ground would cause it to dig a 3x3 mineshaft with the block as the center?
If it was changed a little, I could see this working in minecraft, again, as long as there was a limit to the number of golems allowed to each player.

Think about making a clay golem...that does all of your work for you, kills mobs, etc,...
now think of using clay blocks to make an anti-creeper bunker. It's not a very good idea and in the end, you will end up in a 1x1x2 hole, 2 blocks under sea level, hoping that a creeper/zombie/whatever doesn't spawn there.
It's not a good idea to make a base out of it, so why on earth would one ever turn it into a golem to guard their base/house/whatever? If you want it, go make a mod or bother mod-makers until they make it for you.
Well, I support! I've wanted clay golems for a long time! For all the people saying that they should have a limit, clay is non-renewable. that makes them very usefull, but also means you can't have infinite.
It's OP! Clay is easy to obtain if you look in a swamp biome!
You seem to be forgetting that it still requires pumpkins. Pumpkins are really
the only things that makes any kind of golem hard to make. They're rare and
grow slowly. I thought of using clay because it's one of those largely regional
resources that you can find a lot of if you look in the right place, like snow.
They could just guard your base forever!
One thing mobs in Minecraft are not known for is good combat AI.
Clay golems will end up dying very quickly against mobs, since they only
have 10 hearts and no special AI for avoiding projectiles or explosions.
How can they find ore if they hardly ever mine stone?
The idea is that they will find caves and dig around in them. Exposed ore is very common
in caves. If, however, they just dug through stone, they would potentialy ruin a lot of
player-made structures and terrain.
Yous should jsut be able to tell them when to stop doing their task.
The problem is finding them. They'll mine a bunch of ore, then you'll go all the
way out to try to retrieve them, and by the time you find them and send them back, you
might as well have just gone mining or monster hunting yourself.
Right. And you actually say that pumpkins grow slowly?
That's funny. My pumpkins grow decently fast and if I ever bothered to harvest some snow from the nearby taiga, I would have an army of snow golems.

Well I for one support the Clay Golem as it has many pros and no cons besides the ones that people are making by saying that it makes our lives easier. Which I can understand, however once you fought the enderdragon and all, you don't feel like doing it again, you feel like exploring new things. I'm at that stage and even if this could be made into just a mod and not an actual in-game golem I'm okay with it and would gladly download

The problem with your argument here, is that while clay may be fragile, having any kind of magic mob that you can create that does stuff for you is a little OP in the first place, especially if you spawn in a spot with pumpkins and clay nearby.
Did I also mention that pumpkins can be grown infinitely, taking away any kind rarity to making them?
Snow golems may be the same way, with only needing a common resource, snow, and a pumpkin to create them, but they have a balance:
-They leave annoying trails of snow all over where they are guarding
-They do not do very much damage to mobs, making it not a very effective way of guarding something if you only have 2 or 3 pumpkins.
-They do not do any work better than the player can
Clay Golems do have a few of these problems, though. They have little to balance out with their advantages other than them having very little health (1/2 of the players health). They can mine without making human errors, they do not miss any caves, and they do not get lost on the home journey. All of this points to golems being more efficient than players are at mining.
One other problem is that this kind of makes snow golems and iron golems purposeless if they can hold a sword or other tools. This means they automatically make snow golems useless, because they do much more damage than them, and it makes iron golems useless if you give it a good enough sword. While it would be nice to have an AI to help you with your digging, it still allows for you to just sit and wait for it to return with nearly free stuff.
To correct this kind of unbalance, you could possibly not let it hold a sword, thus making it not making other golems useless, and gving it a slower mining speed and/or a much smaller inventory than the player. This makes it better early-game to go mining yourself with or without the golem than just letting the golem(s) mine by itself.
i really like the idea i think it should be added to minecraft or atleast made a mod like mo golems or somthintho i am only one person but great idea i give it five diamonds
