I had this idea a while ago while I was venturing into an abandoned mine shaft. I wondered if there was someone who built these wooden spires, or carved all of this stone all of those years ago. I wondered, who did this and what happened to them? Was it some old explorer like me who just wanted the materials? Was it a group of people who were working for a single person? Did they abandon it due to the monsters that lurked around every corner or was it meant to exterminate lowly miners that weren't needed anymore?
Well this is what those miners of old turned into.
Mining Specters are ghosts of the fallen in abandoned mine shafts. They spawn randomly near chests, which contain their precious mined materials. Their faces look similar to yours, only their faces look pained like a creeper's twisted head. though their bottom half is transparent, you could make out tattered work clothes made to survive years of abuse in a mine. You see them carrying their standard-issue worn Iron Pickaxe, and they don't mind your presence unless you disturb them by opening their chest or attacking them. If you do kill them, they drop an iron ingot most of the time. If not an iron ingot, it's an iron pickaxe, enchanted with efficiency 1. They have 12 hearts of health, and deal three hearts of damage if you don't have armor on. If left unattended, they have a 7% chance of mining any type of ore that is close by.

I like this idea! Don't know how hard it will be to program this into a game like Minecraft, but I support most of it! I think they might be a little overpowered due to the fact that they deal 3 HEARTS!!! OMG! I wouldn't open a chest in an abandoned mineshaft ever! Also, maybe only 1 ghost per chest in a mineshaft.
From the looks of things you wanna turn Herobrine into an actual mob.
It seems similar, but Herobrine is more of a builder/stalker entity, and this is just supposed to be a generic miner ghost.
On another note, I would nerf the damage to 2 hearts, maybe 1 and a half. 3 is pretty bad. And I'm not sure if I like the fact that they can mine. if they are supposed to be ghosts, wouldn't they just be present there? Also, they could be present around either learge depsits of ore or valuable ore/materials.

There is darkness and shadows in everyone and everything. There's nothing you can do about it, all you can do is adapt.
I embrace it.
When provoked their eyes should become pure white and they should go insane and make ghast noises.
We need something really creepy in vanilla, you know?

Even though they are dead, they are trapped in the mine, and thus would do what they have always done: mine what they were told to mine when they made their final trip.
Besides, the ores that they mined earlier would drop from them if you kill them. Hence, the small percentage of them mining. most of these ghosts would mine common stuff like a few cobblestones and a few iron ores. though, there is a .35% chance of the miner being tasked with mining diamond ore...
[EDIT] and yes, it should be nerfed to 1 1/2 hearts. three is like enderdragon-quality damage.

You mean Enderman quality damage, right?
I am ninja'd far too often.
