Alright...we know that endermen are pretty formidable in combat. They have a high attack, health, dodge arrows, teleport randomly... However, whens the last time you died by one without initiating a fight KNOWINGLY?
Maybe its just me, but the enderman has NEVER killed me unless I tried to kill him first. The fact that he NEVER attacks unless attacked first / direct eye contact makes them.. ..nearly harmless unless your ether confident enough to attack them, or such a poor player that you cant help but look directly at them (no offense to those players, by the way).
I understand it was the point behind the enderman was to only make it dangerous if you look at it...but this needs to be altered I believe to make him actually a threat outside if you attack. I was thinking maybe making an aggression "radius" like other monsters, but have it perhaps...1/4th of the normal mob radius? less perhaps? but in all seriousness, its just SILLY to be able to cuddle up to one as long as you dont make eye contact.
They should give it a small radius, make it at least somewhat like the witch from left 4 dead or something. Or perhaps instead increase the area of how close you can look near him. such as if hes standing next to a pillar of blocks and you look at the pillar, it still gets him mad. or both. I myself would prefer both since he is a cake walk to avoid right now. make him POSSIBLE to avoid, but not insanely easy.
Giving in some thought, I understand in "the end" this might be problematic....but I figure its still worth looking into if it was tuned properly. Again, the radius I suggested was not to large.. thinking about it now I figure maybe... 3-5 blocks away from him would be his agro radius edge? and as for the cursor size relative to making him aggressive, make it perhaps double the size of the cursor itself (from edge to edge of the cursor cross, double that size)? still not very large, but big enough it would be a LITTLE less forgiving. also, it would give use to the pumpkin as a hat.
Anyway, any replies, be it support, criticism, comments, suggestions, are welcome and invited.
2. The point of neutral endermen is to not force a powerful mob upon beginners. The enderman is powerful, fast, and it can teleport. Forcing this upon someone who doesn't know what they do is ridiculous.
3. Another point of neutral enderman may be not to force the end upon the player.

I can understand the idea of having the enderman be avoidable, and I dont think he should be like ALL other mobs, having a 20 block or so detection radius. My point simply is its a little...ridiculous to be able to mine, chop wood, eat, and do almost any activity with him right next to you without even the slightest worry.
Also I can understand my poll may seem bias...but I intended it to be more humorous than anything.
Anyway, the way that I would see the enderman, were he buffed the way I visualized it, he would still be very much avoidable, you just would have to keep SOME distance...say...4 blocks? enough you could very much still get around him, but big enough you couldn't just waltz around them without a care...
As for the end yes...I agree it could be problematic, maybe even need changes...However I feel as he is now hes more of a joke than anything when it comes to the mob department. Creepers (particularly with all the AI buffs) are particularly fatal these days, without armor in those first few days. And without a bow / good sword, they are pretty much UN-avoidable unless you decide not to go anywhere near them.
I just want him to seem like a little bit more than a guy you "challenge" to a fight for enderpearls. make him at least the SLIGHTEST bit territorial. Perhaps give a warning off when your approaching his comfort zone?
If you still disagree with my point I want you to try something...go into creative, make a 30 x 30 platform, fence it off, with fence gates at both ends, and most importantly fill with endermen. If you keep your camera aimed at the ground, you can push through the entire platform to the other end...they just do NOT care.
Still. They are extremely strong, with twice player heath, very fast speed, teleportation... Creepers are even easier if you know what you are doing.

You have a good thing there, and that bit HAS worried me. Originally when they released him he was far LESS powerful then now...but they buffed him up to be QUIET the fighter..Yet still avoidable. But he has never caused any danger to me, at least, because being attacked by him ONLY happens if you strike him first, or give eye contact. if you can avoid eye contact (Not to difficult) and dont strike him, then the ONLY danger in the end is falling / the dragon. And even outside the end, I'm sure one could domesticate an enderman as a house pet if they avoided eye contact and built a cage around it (without water).
Diamonds, would you feel different if he was nerfed again slightly, while adding in detection buffs, since it would (hopefully) balance such an issue?
Voted no.
What I would like would be if the Endermen's eyes didn't glow until you looked at them. This'd make it eaiser to accidentally look one in the eyes in a dark cave or at nighttime. Would also make it 10 times more scary to suddenly be attacked by one.

I like such an Idea, Ill add that to the poll.
I thought of it before but was unsure about suggesting it.
Also even if you suggested the enderman was a challenge ment for endgame..you can collect pearls fairly easy (if a bit slower) by burning them with a flint and steel. It really is ridiculous at times how much of a pushover they can be in that respect. combine all that with the fear of water and hes actually one of the easiest mobs in the game.. strong, but easy, if your the slightest bit tactical about approaching.
*Thinky think think*
I guess if you nerfed their health to 15 hearts and normal mode damage to 3 hearts I guess you could increase how close you need to look. Perhaps their eyes could also be a little fainter.

That sounds very good...and I agree with the health debuff. Essentially what it is now is a super powered mob that...almost never attacks.
What about the agro radius? not something large, just something similar to the witch in l4d. you can go around, just dont get to close? like 3 blocks or so radius?

Yeah, that's okay. I think 4 is a little too much, but 3 is alright. Perhaps if it through a wall, obviously it woudn't work.

Yeah, I would not expect it through walls, id expect it to be like a normal mob field of view, just much smaller. just something that makes him have even the smallest sense of territoriality that other mobs have. Thanks for helping me improve my idea, Diamonds, I appreciate it.
