The crafting system should be very very complex. This is a sandbox game, it should be about everything to be honest.
In a true sandbox game you should be able to make ANYTHING.
If this was the truest of true sandbox games, I should be able to make a nuke to "ruin" my SINGLE PLAYER experience.
This is why their should be full mod-ability. And a separate developer-server. Seriously.

This.
though, the nuke should take about 10 years to make, and you'd need at least 20 people. lol
I almost think all suggestion threads for guns should be instantly locked/deleted.
At BEST, I think there could be one flintlock pistol with a small effective range and expensive to make/use, but does very good damage at the close range it's designed for.
That's all - there should never be any long-ranged rifles or extreme damage blunderbusses. The crafting recipe the OP had would be good, just remove the stock part of it since it would only be for a pistol.
I think posts like yours should be instantly deleted from the forum. Even though I don't support guns in Minecraft, he has every right to suggest them.
The point being that threads about guns always bring up lots of controversy and people angry at others who don't share the same opinion. Perhaps we could have one, standardized guns thread so that the discussion could be monitored, and everyone's opinion on the matter could be said without risk of things like this happening.
So far, gun threads just don't work, and people should know that by now. People have every right in the world to suggest them... I'm just begging that they choose not to.
Am I the only one who seems to like this idea, however with a different gun? O_o
The flintlock is a bit modern for the medieval age, but I've found a few firearms that were used in medieval times...
If it stays with the flintlock, I'll say that it's kinda "meh", but...
Perhaps it could be put in creative mode? Then we can stop all the bickering about guns. ;D

Also, my gender changes every day. DEAL WITH IT.
I recall notch didn't want "guns" like any un-dodgable weapon that intstantly hits the player.
Maybe the bullet just fires straight and does a lil' more damage and a bit faster, not to mention a longer reload.
But however, the rounds are harder to obtain, so they are more like a side-arm then a main weapon.
Just throwing in my thoughts.

Magic have a bigger priority than Technology when it comes to combat, but Mining and Crafting a bigger priority to Magic.
There's no pirates in minecraft, so there's no need for flintlock pistols.
It's NOT in the Renaissance period. It's a custom history that notch himself made up, so lets follow his taste and make A medieval theme that doesn't rely on guns, and half on technology.
Magic have a bigger priority than Technology when it comes to combat, but Mining and Crafting a bigger priority to Magic.
There's plenty of other ranged weapon, and guns are NOT on the list, mainly for balance purposes.
You should also realize how the word "gun" affect the society's mind too.
When a video game has guns, it makes people go "gaga" with limitless violence, because that's what guns are for.
Even if it's more of a opinion, I DO know that there's a certain feeling that gets aroused when guns are mentioned.
Now when you have weapons like Blowpipes, Crossbows, Glaive (Large Metal Boomerangs, like Shurikens), it brings about tactics and strategy in it's use. For guns, you just point and click.
Okay, so here's the deal. I've merged a couple of pretty good gun threads together not only so some of you get a better idea of how good suggestions are made, but also so you can see that guns were at one point discussed critically and calmly.
I'd like to see some more of that. I'm sure we all would.
In the future, I would prefer that all guns or firearm-related suggestions appear in this thread, and this thread alone where it can be freely discussed, supported, or rejected.
Just remember that objections are well noted; even Notch has stated his distaste. There's no need to beat this into people's heads any more than it has with another pile of "NO" posts. The fact of the matter is that guns are desired by some and they are perfectly well allowed to have a thread for that.
No excuses for threadshitting in this thread (or others for that matter >.>). Consider this advance warning. I'll be editing the OP to add this lecture there as well.
Behave yourselves. If you feel that you can't, then just move on to something else.
Carry on, gentlemen.
NOTE: Any additional gun threads are to be referred to this thread and reported for my attention. Two dozen threads for the same sort of device isn't necessary.

Even if it's more of a opinion, I DO know that there's a certain feeling that gets aroused when guns are mentioned. I get aroused on violence even with the weaponry we already have, any difference?

Same can be said about crossbows, point & click! Also, if guns dont insta-hit!, and be dodgeable, i think it still requires some stratergy, although that would overlap the niche of the crossbow. A lot have suggested innaccurate as hell shots, like shooting in a random direction.

I'm pretty sure anyone who thinks guns in Minecraft automatically thinks "OMG COUNTERSTRIKE FFFFFFFFFFFFF" and that there would be Glocks and AK47s everywhere.
And yeah, I agree, that would be ****ing retarded and break the game.
However, flintlock pistols and blunderbusses would fit perfectly with the game's setting.
They would have to have very slow load speeds and be expensive to make, like this guy's idea.
It would NOT turn into anything resembling CS, and it would just add to the weapon tree and make things a bit more interesting.
Just as long as it's not too OP, and fairly difficult to make, it wouldn't be a problem.
Most of the people against it are just like "NO HGNNNNNDJIFHSDIUFHEI" without thinking about it at all.
Again, why would he add something worse than a bow that costs more to make and has slower load speeds?
Why have bows at all when there's swords?
Because the bullet would travel almost instantly, while arrows do not.
Did you read the first post?
It explained how it was different from a pistol, and what the upsides and downsides to it would be.
There should be different weapon choices, and this would just be a branch of the weapon tree.
I like the idea of a flintlock pistol and I'm not sure why everyone is so hostile towards it. No one supports a game-breaking all-purpose weapon. I just think old fashioned guns would be a nice aesthetic alternative.

They would have to be powerful (say as powerful as a diamond sword) but extremely inaccurate at range, and not be able to be fired like a machine gun (like the bow can be if you hold RMB XD).
Of course, the time period wouldn't allow for anything besides an ancient Hand Cannon without being anachronistic.
The flintlock is a bit modern for the medieval age,
So is a coal-powered locomotive.

The inquisitors were torturing Harry.
First, Ignatius used the rock.
Then Billy asked Harry if he wanted to read his BDSM blog. Harry was so surprised that his pants flew right off. He was wearing women's underpants. The inquisitors were wearing them, too.
Edit: Oops, I meant guns, not weapons.

Maybe i'm the only one, but I LIKE the idea of having a fast, cheap, weaker weapon OR a slow, costly, strong weapon.
I'd make it so you have to mix the gun, iron, gunpowder, and flint together in the inventory crafting spot to reload to limit firing rate.
Also, I love how rudely people turn down ideas with no reason. Mature.
