I came upon an interesting idea today. I was thinking about how you diamonds pickaxes need 9 seconds to mine obsidian, but obsidian cannot be crafted into a tool, and I am not asking for it to be made into a tool material. I was thinking it would be an interesting idea to have "Obsidiary Tools" which would have 256 (or 64 whatever is less over powered) more uses than it originally had, and it would mine 20% faster (so mining obsidian with an Obsidiary Diamond pick would take only eight seconds). In order to make an obsidiary tool you would have to put the tool in the center of the crafting grid (Note: The tool either has to be in full durability, or it will subtract whatever damages are already done to it after the finished product is made) and surround the grid with obsidian (either 8 or 4 obsidian around the tool whatever is more fair). The obsidiary tool will keep its original color but the tips (or edges) of the tool will become and obsidian like texture. This would give obsidian another use and also increase its demand among multiplayer servers.
Another Idea I had for this would be that an Obsidiary Tool could get a random bonus to mining a certain material. Meaning that in addition to having a higher speed, a random object (one that is specifically mined by the type of tool crafted) would take 50% less time to mine making it take only 30% the normal time to mine. Now here's the key part. Obsidian must stay rare. If it is not hard to find Obsidian then everyone will have these ultimate tools. So it is necessary to keep the obsidiary tools difficult to craft.
Just an idea, I thought it could create a new use for obsidian.

No matter how you put it, Obsidian tools are practically impossible to balance. Obsidian is in no way rare. You can get hundreds of it from the average cavern by freezing a single lava lake.
Are you sure my idea was posted a hundred times? or was it actual obsidian tools. If you read my post (like you probably didn't) my idea was to tip/coat the tools with obsidian, just giving a slight boost to durability and mining speed.

Yeah it's true. Notch himself said that he didn't want obsidian to be everywhere. Obsidian is also hard to mine though and dangerous if you're a new player.

Er, no. It's very easy to mine Obsidian. It's also trivial to gather it by digging trenches and filling them with lava.
Making diamond tools better at the cost of a minute or two of mining is simply overpowered. If anything, Obsidian tools should be a new tier somewhere between stone and iron. That wouldn't work too well, though.
Could. You. Not. Use. Periods. After. Every. Word. So. I. Could. Understand. What. You. Are. Trying. To. Say.
Not really a reply... If anything, sounds like you are flaming your own thread.
ANYWAY, back to topic. Yeah, it doesn't really matter how you dress it up, its still overpowered. Diamond is as powerful as it is based on rarity. If obsidian was rare or at least hard to make, then yeah, I could agree to that.
Um, why would coating a tool with glass make it better?
Obsidian is an extremely sharp glass. It is used for medical tools even today. So adding it to the tip of a weapon or tool would give it a sharper cut.

It's true that it is very sharp when shattered, but it isn't the strongest material in the world.
That's why it's used in daggers or scalpels at most, not in shovels or pickaxes.

But we must also remember that this material in minecraft is the hardest material to break.

That's why I edited it after.

That's pretty much my case in a nutshell. Thank you.
