Alot of us sometimes get tired of going into servers that have people breaking into your house or chests. We know there is a lockett plugin for most servers but some dont. And now with the new minecraft xbox edition we got people who join our games and break into our stuff. What if there was a way to make it so you could lock a door and lock a chest so no one could get into your house or chest. Would be pretty cool. And the only one who could open the door is the one with the key to it. And you could make locks and keys out of iron.
Actually, I like the idea of doors with keys. Perhaps constructing a wooden door with an iron ingot in the center of the crafting grid (to be the lock mechanism) could yield a lockable door. A key could be crafted out of gold and/or iron ingots.
The question would be this: would the door be paired to a key or to a person?
If the door were paired to a person, the key would be useless, thus rendering the lock mechanism out-of-place.
If the door were paired to a key, there would need to be some way to determine what key goes with what door. Also, if a person was killed the key might be destroyed or captured.
There could be a craftable lock mechanism that, when crafted with a door/chest, would lock the item, requiring a key to be made.
Keys would be made and could be "synced" by the creator to chests:
1. you make a lock, and you put it in your actionbar.
2. next, you equip it, and right-click. It will bring up a box, in which you type in a "password" for the lock. The lock will only accept keys with a matching password.
3. Make a key. You must type the same password you typed in for the Lock.
4. craft the lock with a door/chest to make a locked door/chest.
5. Place the locked door/chest down. Only the placer can mine it.

This is good.
The problem remains, though, that even though the key has a unique password, all keys (presumably) share the same image, so for a user holding more than one key it's impossible to tell which key opens which item.
Your solution does address the lost-or-destroyed key problem; that a new key could be crafted with the same passcode to open a lock.
This does not solve the problem of someone killing you and stealing the key.
Would that need to be an accepted setback of the locked chest/door?
Iron doors and redstone. Even a troglodyte could lock a door with redstone. As for chests, don't flaunt around your chest as if you were a complete god with no fear of thievery. Keep your important things hidden.

you could make a locking mechanizum with a full inventory of redstone, but most of the time, walking up and placing a redstone torch will destroy all work.unless, you place it sideways and invert it. but if that happens, and the server glitched the redstone, your locked out.

As Bond4141 said, redstone locks are troglodytically easy to circumvent.
I do take your point about flaunting valuables - much of the fun and creativity of Minecraft is centered around the protection of goods, whether it be by means of labyrinths, hidden doors, or buried treasure.
ruins raiding and pvp servers
all the challenge is gone
True for some servers, but not all. Depending on how this were implemented, new sub-games could arise from it and new possibilities for those who create and play adventure maps would arise.
-Keys that are linked to chest/doors will glow purple, and will be named "Key (password)"
-Keys dropped will still have their link with your locks, to keep PvP alive.
-You can choose to have a "Key Ring", it will store your keys in one convenient inventory space, and operates like the Keys stored in it.

Up to 15 Keys can be stored in one Key Ring.
You can store keys by right-clicking while wielding/holding a non-full Key Ring, which brings up a menu similar to Chests.
You may only store Keys in Key Rings
Right-click with a Key Ring on a lock in which the Key is stored in to open the door/chest.
Key Rings will be dropped WITH ALL KEYS INTACT. Never carry your keys around when at risk.

I was gonna say that...
Anyways, why not just create keys with passwords, use it on doors, and if someone finds your password your screwed? The lock thing sounds unessasary. Plus, what if you don't have the materials for the key after you make the lock?
Key isn't OP if anyones about to say that cause if someone gets it, they'll know the password so you can't just hold it with you. And if you try to hide the key in a chest, they'll steal from your chest. If you hide it in your locked one, well, you can't cause the key's in the lock and you can't store it in a chest if it's in the keyhole(pretend there's a keyhole). So you can't store it, and putting it in a chest would be useless. So not OP at all.
To the poster above me, what if you stored the key ring in the locked chest? Unless that's impossible.

Now to shoot your idea/rant down...
You can't store the key to the chest/door in a chest. This will prevent people from locking themselves in...
Locks add variation to your mechanisms. You can have more than one password for your Chests/Doors, so if they have your password for a Chest, there's no need to worry, unless you have the same key for your door too... :|
When you open a Chest, it will say "Chest-(password)", and the name of the door/chest in your inventory* have the name "Door/Chest-(password)"
*Or you can check your history of lock passwords, so if you need a new key, you can browse through the history, and remake the Key.
NOTE: I AM CHANGING THE RECIPE FOR KEYS, TO KEEP KEYS "CHEAPER".
Here, each Recipe makes 4 unsynced Keys (Unsynced Keys are stackable).

Only Wooden Doors can be locked, and Locked Doors can't be destroyed by Zombies.
Keys work like two-way Levers, you can turn a Synced Door open/closed to your heart's desire.
Keys stay in your inventory/Key Ring when you activate a Synced Chest. Trying to store a Key Ring with the Key to the Chest will remove the Key. It will put the Key in your inventory/drop it if your inventory is full.
Alrighty, we seem to be tackling the paring problem with gusto, but what about this:
Locked doors and chests, in order to be truly locked, must not be minable by other players.
This, however, creates invincible blocks which cannot be removed unless the player with the [passcode] removes them.
I'm not really on board for the doors and like the above user said, you can just go around the locked door.
On the topic of chests, I was never 100% on the key idea even if there is a tool tip that lets you name which key goes where, etc. I think another alternative would have a keypad in the GUI with a four digit code. Upon dropping the chest for the first time you can set the code however you want. There should also be an option to change the code if necessary.
As for the problem of other people breaking open your chest... hmm... maybe the chest can be user specified and if someone else is trying to break it, it will send a message to the owner that his chest is being broke into. The chest can have high durability so it takes time to break into like obsidian.
Locked Doors/Chests are only minable while holding the Key to it, when holding the Key, it will take about 5 seconds to mine, but without, it'll take 30 seconds
Very few people have the nerve to mine into your house, since it's considered griefing. This already happens now, though.
You can un-craft the Lock from the Door/Chest, and get your Door/Chest and Lock back, if you want to change the password. Keys can be un-made, and remade to change their passwords (You need to craft four Keys into 4 Gold Ingots, though, and re-craft the Keys).
The GUI looks like the Sign's GUI, but is grey, and only 1 line of 10 characters is allowed.
Its incredible redundancy with other topics that have already been posted.

The Minecraft wiki page (located here: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Server_commands) has no locking commands.
It would be helpful if you would provide a link to the page to which you refer.
