As of now blocking is useless. There is no reason to block, yeah it takes off some damage but honestly you're doing it wrong if you're taking damage anyways, blocking only makes you take more damage than you would if you'd move around the mob and attack at the right times and it also slows you down to a crawl, making it one of the most useless features in the game. The only thing that should be damaging you is skeleton arrows, which brings me to my suggestion.
My suggestion?
Change it so that when you're blocking you won't be knocked back from attacks. This is not only realistic but will not make blocking OP. Strafing around a skeleton in 1.3.1 isn't very effective due to the arrow speed and the knockback, changing this mechanic can make blocking a lot more useful and thus will be a feature that actually has a purpose in the game.
To be honest I think this small change will make the block feature 10x more useful, and if you want to make it even more useful (I'm fine with just not being knockbacked, this is for people who might want more), make it so melee attackers who hit you while you are blocking are knocked back. This will give you some breathing space and I can definitely see it also improving PVP instead of just clicking on your enemy as fast as possible.
So if someone takes damage from a mob at all, you're saying they just suck at fighting and they don't know how to do it? Because that's basically what you just said. And blocking takes off HALF the damage of an attack, which is actually more realistic than it stopping knockback. If someone holds up a shield to deflect a blade, more than likely they will still get pushed back or roll back on their heels a bit, but they won't take a direct hit from the blade, which is the equivalent of the halfened damage (kind of). It's not a terrible idea, I just think that the halfened damage should stay as it is.
Overall, I think blocking is fine, it doesn't need to be changed.

Rep'd you for responding.
However you're not at all understanding what I'm saying. No I'm not saying you suck at fighting if you take damage ._. I'm saying it's a lot more effective to not block and just attack (taking 0 damage if you have basic strafing skills/keeping your distance) then block and take half damage and maybe take 3 hearts of damage from the blocking which not only gives the enemy the opportunity to close the distance but also deals damage to you, which makes blocking useless.
not sure if srs, go smack a couch or something as hard as you can (actually on second thought use a stick or something), does it get pushed back? Do you understand how hard it is to push something back, that weighs, say 160 pounds (average weight no?) with a blow, especially if they're bracing for it with a block? Force = mass x acceleration, and a zombie or an arrow's mass is a lot smaller than your body's inertia.
You're not reading it right, the half damage reduction stays AND you don't get knocked back.
And I disagree, it's completely useless atm (you take more damage "blocking" rather than just attacking) and this will make it useful or at least gives you a reason to block.
I like this idea! Especially the second part.
Making it so that attacking a blocking guy knocks you back would make pvp fights a lot more tactical: you'd need to wait for openings, or you could choose to use another weapon like lava, which would make you vulnerable for a second, giving your enemy an opening. You get the idea. But you could still button-mash a blocking enemy; they'd take 50% damage So I think there should be delay between sword swings, to make combat make more sense. But I'm getting derailed now on improving pvp xD
But this'd be nice against skeletons, too: you could choose to dodge attacks, which is hard, but you don't take damage, or you could block, which is easy, but you do take some.
Yeah the second part I'm still not too sure of but the first I can see improving the game greatly and should definitely be added.
Personally, I think you would need to make it so that you had to block at the right time to knock your attacker back (otherwise you would get a bunch of people holding block) but I like the idea of now getting knocked back when blocking, I also think that block should block like 90% of damage, for example: PersonA swings sword at personB, we now have two options: 1) personB blocks, gets a few bruises, and loses some energy (possibly staggers personA). 2) personB fails to block, personB is ether incapacitated and will die soon, or personB is dead(Unless personB is wearing armor).
I never use blocking because like this guy said, i'd rather get more damage on someone while avoiding damage all together than slowing my self down open to way more hits, not being able to retaliate and still taking damage, i sir agree with you
Honestly, I think blocking should block all damage for the first two or three game ticks (20th of a second) with rapid reduction in resistance the longer you maintain it, with a visual indicator that works like a reverse eating animation. (in your face at first, gradually but quickly moves back to native in-hand position.)
One way I think blocking could be improved is if you block between 50-0MS before being hit with melee there is a small chance of the opponent taking 1/2 heart of damage and 60% chance of you taking none. Or with the same time period with an incoming arrow, deflecting the arrow
