What kinds of "modes" would you like to see in minecraft? I'm talking before you choose the generation types (type, size. theme, and shape) you would choose the mode.
This classic indev would be a no-brainer, but what about the old survival, the creative, or sandbox?
Sandbox would be different than creative so you customize everything, including spawn rates, time of day, if the time changes, no-clip, flying, no HUD, if arrows spawn enemies, if water is finite, what enemies spawn, and the like.
Base survival could be something like this: You have infinite life at day, but during the night overpowered zombies spawn from designated places you cannot go near or block off, and some zombies can breath fire or destroy rock or something. You get a score based on the days survived and how many and what types of zombies killed.
What modes do you think would be great in the game?
(I thought this should go in indev, but am not completely sure if it shouldn't or not. I'll let the mods decide.)
I'd like to see a Lua- or other code-based implementation method. As well as model implementation.
Then we could make our own weapons and stuff :biggrin.gif:
I really like the sandbox idea! And creative is definitely here to stay, so that's not really one we need to think about as a new mode.
By those, I meant adding them as a mode right in the same game, so no need to switch tabs or the whatnot.
Another idea - Creeper Attack.
-Creeper attack is much like a reverse hell in a way. You start in some caves underground with an iron pickax from the start. The goal is to find something above the caves in a certain time. Here's the catch. So creepers are infesting the aboveground, and they could potentially leak into your caves. you can use these creepers to your advantage by blowing some stuff up for you, as the creepers would drop nothing but meat. No TNT.
BAM. Another.
-Hardcore. Mobs are 2x stronger both attack-wise and in defense. Twice as hard to mine stuff, longer nights, no difficulty switching, and you get points for killing things.
Oh, and did I mention that the creepers explode when killed, zombies can destroy any blocks in front of them (including foot level blocks), spiders can jump twice as high and shoot webs that slow you for five seconds, and skeletons shoot arrows twice as fast.
Pigs and sheep can bite as well, but only if attacked.
(And to custom servers being used, this is simply an easier way to do it without our coding.)
Some form of tower defense (although probably as a Lua addon, rather than a full-blown game mode).
You get tower blocks, and wall blocks. Tower blocks shoot at enemies, but both blocks can be used to divert paths so the enemies have to take a longer route to get to your base. However a unique twist to most tower defence games, would be that the wall blocks can be built up, either to stop larger or flying enemies going over, or to place towers on top of to increase their range.
That's a bit off the minecraft idea, but it would be well for a little mod or something.
chezhead, you've been around long enough: Please, stop posting suggestions in the /indev/ forum. I know you weren't sure, but it's been made pretty clear: if it's not currently in /indev/ it needs to be talked about elsewhere. Topic moved to Suggestions.
I'd like to see something similar to the movie "Pitch Black"
Though, this would necessitate the presence of hostile flying creatures.
Have it so the day time lasts twice as long as it does now,
and the night time lasts three times as long as it does now.
Going into caves during the day would be suicidal, as the beasts would be present in abundant amounts. However, they'd never enter the light during the day time, even if they were chasing you.
Once night-time arrives though...the land and sky are filled with prowling beasts, and its up to the players to have keen awareness and quick-wits to fend off and fortify themselves, if not even outright hide from them. However while the creatures are on the surface, there aren't nearly as many that remain within the caves.
The goal could be to rebuild your "space ship" ('cause they used a ship to escape in the movie, and playing until you die is an overplayed theme), in which you could need X amount of Iron to repair the hull, X amount of gold to replace the electrical conduits, and X amount of diamonds as fuel.
The AI would need a change though, so that they aren't making a bee-line for you just because you're within range. There would need to be line of sight, etc.
I think it'd be a fun game mode though!

Professional Underwater Lava-miner.
Also a massive mushroom mongler.
Mob Husbandry mode: You have to build lairs and house and feed mobs, and provide them with entertainment and stuff. Like Dungeon Keeper only you are an imp and have to do all the work yourself. Don't please the mobs and they kill you!
