Flint and steel have become a lot more useful since they have extra uses for TNT, (mining it and lighting it)
Though fling and steel is known for briefing, not elements of mine craft..
I was thinking, what if you could put it in a furnace while cooking something and it took the durability out of the flint and steel, but it only lasted as long as fire lasts when you just place it on the ground.
^(since you are not actually burning anything)
So just burning and blowing things up with the flint and steel wouldn't be the only function.
Two ideas in a few minutes? I think you need to slow down and think these through a little more and type slowly (spelling mistakes)
I don't like this really, because the furnace mechanism is burning the fuel (wood, coal, lava, etc) to cook or smelt. Flint and steel is not something that can be burned to produce heat and cook or smelt things, it is just a means of lighting fire.
Also fire doesn't last long being placed on the ground so it might not even be long enough to be useful
If you knew about the fire Triangle, you would see why this wouldn't work.
Coal, logs, wood, and charcoal are all fuel. Flint/Steel is a heat source (ignition). Lava is different because it's a heat transfer rather than an actual fire.

I get that, but each USE of the f&s in minecraft only lasts a few seconds, then the furnace would automatically take another use of the flint and steel. Sure it doesn't obey normal physics, it makes sense with minecraft physics:)

Try to think inside the blocks buddy
I mean why argue about the gas displacement in a game where air (the block) is truly the absence of matter and gravity only applies when certain entities are modified..
Sorry for bad typing but I'm using my cellphone and touchscreens are always rather "touchie"
I didn't argue for any of that. It just doesn't make sense in any sort of reality.
Why not just be able to stick a torch in there and get unlimited cooking forever because torches never burn out?
because torches are made up of coal and sticks, and each torch is 1/4 of a stick and piece of coal.. Sticks AND coal can burn in a furnace, so by using 1 piece of coal and 1 stick to fuel a furnace you are essentially using 4 torches to fuel a furnace since it's all raw materials.
Bad replying on my part because I addressed multiple posts with one quote so sorry for that.
the whole thing that makes the flint and steel different is the fact that they don't just create a spark, they burn for a limited time..
as Unknown_Phate said about mentioning better than wolves mod,
Where fire just purely being lit can fuel cauldrons that cook items, it's the same type of thing but not as overpowered
IRL you have to light simple ovens like that in Minecraft but they require a continuous source of fuel- though in game starting a fire doesn't just spark and go out while igniting other materials, it CREATES a fire that for a limited time, is self sustaining !:DD

I guess I need to put sarcasm tags in my posts from now on..

That isn't really true. The flint and steel makes the spark which lights the fuel (whether it is grass, wood, etc) on fire. The flint and steel itself doesn't catch on fire for any period of time. I don't think you understand the concept of flint and steel very well.

Yeah that part is understood, but say you lit the inside of the furnace on fire, it would last as long as fire lasts on cobblestone since the furnace is made of cobblestone (per use) Since in MC it doesn't just spark, it creates a fire with whatever materials are present (And unlike real flint and steel , you can just make a spark with only AIR)
Well it lasts a random time, but all random things eventually balance out with each other, so I guess values would be relative to 1 (coal is 8) but I don't know,
Fun fact- before furnaces were in the game, flint and steel was used to smelt ores
Errr... Too easy. 1 iron, 1 flint for... Smelting more than 1 stack of coal? Way too overpowered.
I meant coal has the value of 8, so the flint and steal would have each use valued at 1, since there's 65 uses,, it would have the equivalent to about 8 pieces of coal, or 4 if you just want to cut it in half (making the Flint and steel .5)
I mean theres a lot of stuff you can burn in game that is rarely used -whens the last time you used a sign as fuel?
You can think of it the other way around as in, what lights the fuel source that burns?
And yes 8 coal ~ 1 iron 1 flint
This statement essentially proves our point. it LIGHTS the fuel source, it isn't a fuel source.
I don't think it makes sense for the flint and steel to produce a flame long enough to cook anything. You are saying it needs to last 10 seconds (on cobble like you said in a previous post) which just doesn't make sense. A fire would never just burn on its own on stone for 10 seconds.

And an interesting concept, maybe having fire under a furnace would make it go faster, like in Better Than Wolves

Easy to test in game, when I have access to a comp ill reply, but its obvious this idea was a derpy one so thanks for contributing

And now they don't. There's a reason for that. Zombie also used to drop feathers and bows shot like machine guns. Things get changed for good reason.

Just because people don't usually use signs as fuel, at least a sign makes sense as a fuel source because it can burn.
So does this mean that each use of the flint and steel could smelt/cook one item?
You can think of it the other way around as in, what lights the fuel source that burns?
