I have been considering this for quite a while but I just got around to posting it. Redstone blocks would made by putting 8 redstone dust around a redstone lamp. The blocks would have two states: on and off. To switch it on and off,you would hit it. When on, redstone blocks power anything touching it. When off, it acts as redstone wire that conducts power to any touching redstone blocks/wire and goes on for 20 blocks without the need for repeaters. However placing repeaters on them allows a delay to be applied to the block. In addition, surrounding a block with red stone dust allows the block to carry redstone charge for 15 blocks
Possible uses:
-as a way of making floating compact circuits.
- they will b moveable by pistons opening the door to endless new circuits.
-as a fancy decoration block
-dozens of other uses!
A redstone block idea that isn't the usual I-didnt-use-the-search-bar storage block? Nice.
I would definitely like a block that can carry a redstone charge. Though ideally, it wouldn't require direct contact (save for the first block) but have a set range of sorts. So you place it by, say, a row of pistons, and it can power them all within a given limit.
Limit's a keyword. It can't go on forever. That's too much power.

Maybe it can carry a charge for 40 blocks? What I was originally going to use this for was a flying machine engine but now I'm seeing a lot more possible uses
And for the range for the on- state...maybe everything within 3 blocks?
Red stone wire is about 10 I think so maybe 20 for this?
Twenty would work alright, or else just give it the default redstone range (15). For the on-state, no range is needed as, according to the OP, it would only power things directly touching it.

Since this requires more red stone to make, I think it should be a little more powerful than regular wire
An alternative/secondary form of this idea: Surrounding a block with redstone in the crafting table could give it the ability to carry a charge like this. In case people don't want the big red block being a part of things (aesthetics and all).

Thisthisthis! I long for a way to bury redstone runs within my walls without having to make them 3 meters thick! This would also allow vertical redstone runs without having to build "staircases".

It would be cool to be able to set which faces of the block conduct and which ones don't, by punching the face to turn it on and off. This would allow much more compact circuits.

While it could be nice, I doubt a way to even let us store restone easier will ever be added. Your idea seems to follow along the line of a generator.. but a leveler already honestly does this. Just put it on any block, and it will forever supply power. Plus, redstone dust is just that.. dust.. so it's a little more difficult to justify it as a block. The idea of a block that supplies power no matter how far away the redstone is? Honestly, I have to disagree. Would undo the purpose of a lot of redstone circuitry and redstone items. =P

EXCELLENT ideaThe blocks with red stone in them would give off some
Red
Particles to tell them appart from other blocks

I already limited how far the charge goes to 20 blocks and levers can't be moved by pistons can they? I have quite a few circuits already planned to use this function
I like this, I mean, I'd like to use it for lighting since I play some custom maps, particularly the 404. I've always wanted this anyway, because every ore has a block, and Redstone does not. I could make some nice little TNT test traps. Good idea, support.
You do realise that redstone is a dust right? They aren't ingots like iron and gold. Simply combining 9 pieces of dust won't make a block.
You do realize that glowstone dust is a dust, right? And you simply combine 4 to make a block.
Logic: Unfounded.
I've always liked the idea of the redstone block, though if there was some way to focus its charge, (similar to a repeater), that would be interesting.

I'd limit it to half that. Redstone itself only carries for 15 blocks without a repeater.

Seems to me the effect would be the tradeoff for the cost. But I do see your point.
Go for it.

Exactly my thought.

Does combining 8 pieces of paper and a compass make a map?
Minecraft isn't always realistic when it comes to crafting
