...Only by axe. But flint on top of a stick equals a VERY crude axe. (5 uses?) And leaves drop sticks at the same rate as saplings. This may work better than other ideas, but IDK. Also, lobsters is not an answer on this topic about trees.

Allocators are no longer the future, we have Hoppers now. I still like them, though.
nah I dont think this is a good idea. Just a time waster really, making harvesting your first wood that much slower and more difficult. Having the leaves drop sticks is interesting, but not really all that necessary.

There are two types of people in the world: those who don't find this joke funny and those who are amused by self-referential humour.

Could you guys go five minutes without sigging me?
I'd like either sticks dropping from trees, or a way to craft multiples of the same item at the same time. I'm stick of sitting there like a moron pulling 256 sticks into my inventory 4 at a time >_>

You can. Just click on the sticks repeatedly and they will stack in your hand.

I like making tools for Minecraft. Here are a few of the ones that I have made so far:
MazeGen (Version 1.0) --- An automatic maze generation tool ModelGen (Version 1.0) --- A 3D model import tool
I think this might end up making the start of a game on Minecraft a tad too complex, it would take way more time than usual, you would need to get a total of 9 wood to get a wooden axe(4 for crafting table,2 for the sticks, and 3 for the axe head) and in the way you are suggesting that would be a lot slower than what it is at the moment. Although I am with the others on the sticks, it does sound like a good idea.
For christs sake people, if they can't figure out to punch trees for wood then they sure as hell won't figure out the crafting system without looking it up. Not everything added will make the game too complex for new people to learn if the game is already too complex to learn and the features pale in comparison to already added features.
But yeah, I like the idea of being able to get some planks without chopping a tree down and requiring an axe for doing the difficult job of taking the thing down.

I changed my first post. My previous idea is actually rather stupid. Also, the people before this were responding to a different idea. And waffles, I know that topic existed.

Ok on your new idea:
I still say no. Its just another way to make the game that much more difficult to get into and start playing.

Yes, because it takes soooo long to mine leaves and gravel.

I think that collecting wood is the most essential part of starting a fresh game. We're able to break and collect all the other blocks by hand - why change it so that we can't break wood without an axe? Unless, of course, we make it so that we can't break other blocks without their own respective items but that would just be pretty ridiculous.
As for the sticks issue, I think they're fine as it is. Collecting wood is extremely easy, and you get sixteen sticks from a single log block. If you're ever really starved for wood, you've probably never planted a single sapling ever.

You can't break stone without a pickaxe. Yes, you can slowly break it, but you don't get anything. My idea is that you need flint and some sticks to make a small axe. And wait, what? We're able to break and collect all the other blocks by hand? The only two bricks that have a tool associated with them that can be broken by hand are useless! An axe could be given a use with this idea!

Its easy.
Just don't expect to be able to kill anything with it.
