In both SSP and SMP, armor is either too easy to make or completely overpowered.
A few simple armor upgrades will balance armor in both SSP and SMP. First, Iron armor is far
too easy to gather. Iron Armor is also very simple to craft. To balance it's stats and it's
easy-to acquire nature, I propose adding added complexity to the recipe. First, raw iron ingots
could no longer be the main component in iron armor. A "half slab" made out of iron ingots
could be crafted.
This "half slab" would be known as an iron plate and the recipe would give 2 iron plates. Crafting iron plates with leather armor would create iron armor.
Iron Armor could also be smelted with a lava bucket into cured iron armor for 1 1/2 times more
knockback resistance. Cured iron armor could also be dyed by putting 8 pieces of the same dye in
a crafting table around it.
The final upgrade for iron armor would involve putting 3 lapis lazuli and 6 gold in a crafting
table to make 16 lapis bands. Placing 4 lapis bands in a crafting table around any piece of iron armor
would created banded armor. Banded armor would give additional enchantibility to the piece of armor.
Also, banded armor would have a special skin showing it's special status.
Or better yet, you need leather armor to craft iron armor. For an example, you craft a leather helmet with 5 iron plates to get an iron helmet. Et cetera.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
I'm not sure about this, I have mixed feelings...
If anything change the wool to leather, wool doesn't really make a lot of sense.
I agree with your point about iron armor being far to easy to obtain. On the other hand think of how much iron it takes to make armor. Think of all the iron tools that could make....I believe there is balance with iron armor, it's durability, and it's usefulness. It could use a little tweaking but not this much.
I don't know about cured iron/dyed armor...That idea just seems a little bit much...
You've created a definitely unique idea though so props to you but no support from me.

Good idea. Bump.

Following the same logic, iron tools shoudl be about 10 times harder to obtain too...
Iron plates represent the iron covering the leather in the armor and sticks couldn't
exactly hold up iron blocks. Instead of making iron tools hard to obtain I should probably
nerf their durability.

I changed wool to leather because of multiple posts asking for it and I added the "armor dying" so that people in iron armor would not look so uniform. However, cured iron makes iron armor seem more modular and interesting.Bump. Added "lapis bands" recipe.

But these "instead of crafting X into Z, craft a lot of Y from X and use a lot of Y to make Z" ideas make the game more complex and boring to do stuff :\
Sometimes "realism" doesn't make the game more enjoyable...
Well, that's only my opinion, not an uncontestable truth
I'm not a big fan of killing a ton of cows to make generic armor. Some people are mentioning wool - but I don't see it in the OP? Was it changed?
Wool actually makes a lot of sense - traditional armor was always padded with some sort of animal down. If you were struck in the chest while wearing iron plate with no wool padding.... well, you would die. The wool padding actually absorbs and distributes the force to prevent injuries.
Maybe a new armor type? Iron armor doesn't absorb as much damage without adding wool to make it Padded Iron Armor?

Yah, The leather armor in the OP used to be wool. I changed it because of popular demand.

It's not THAT complicated. I could have added screws, rivets, Banded plates. ect... But still, you have a point. I generally
don't like complexity in games but iron armor is just FAR too easy to craft.
I don't see why this is useful, for several reasons.
1. Component crafting will only make things needlessly complicated.
2. Leather is actually a relatively rare thing unless you corral and breed the animals, which is tedious and difficult to get going, especially so on multiplayer.
3. What's the point? Why do you need to make iron armor harder to craft? I don't think you know what balance means. Balance means that everyone has the same opportunity, and the current recipe guarantees that, and I don't see any reason to change it. As the old saying goes: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

It isn't complicated. There are only 2 components in this. leather and iron. Many people can get 25 leather (a full suit) in 10 minutes if they simply find a plains biome far from spawn. Iron armor is broken. It is incredibly easy to obtain and once you have a set, you are basically playing creative mode on hard.

See the good thing about iron is that its common and better then stone. Diamond is hard to find, in the beginning so iron is best option till ALOT of diamond is aquired
Improve iron armor by adding pointless complication? Iron armor is fine. It doesn't need to be mixed with leather and other nonsense.
If you were hit by an arrow wearing armor made of pure iron, you would die because all the shock was concentrated in one area.
the leather cushions the blow.

I did not change iron tools, but last time i checked, there was no stone armor.

Iron Pickaxe mines Diamond too easily! It's overpowered! Make it require additional resources and a more complicated recipe!
Basically the same idea. Seriously a bad idea. Iron Armor is fine just the way it is.
Furthermore, there are some inconsistencies, mostly with the boots. For example:
Iron Boots use 1 less Iron Bar altogether than before.
Iron Boots also use comparatively less Leather than the other recipes, 50% less to be exact.
So good job, you actually made Iron Boots EASIER to obtain with your idea, the very thing you were complaining about.
If you were hit by an arrow wearing armor made of pure iron, you would die because all the shock was concentrated in one area.

If you were hit by an arrow wearing pure iron armor, you'd die because the arrow shot you in the chest, not because of the shock from the armor. Why? Because pure iron is ridiculously soft. The only reason iron was ever strong was because of tiny impurities. The arrow would go right through it!

About the boots... They are supposed to be the first thing you make, I don't want people to have NO protection.
I didn't mean to say PURE iron. I meant to say iron that wasn't padded.

Actually, By the time I get enough Iron to make Boots I generally go ahead and make Helmet, or if my spelunking went well enough, Leggings too. And you know that's not why you made the recipe the way it is, you just needed to justify what you had already done. Besides, Leather Armor is always there to lend a helping hand.
