I demand shields and a small arrow cool down. Shields will make arrows useless until the shields break, so melee fighters can get in close enough to attack.
You don't say. There are mmos with much more possibilities and even they manage it just fine.
That is because an MMO is more numbers than combat. It is much easier to calculate combat in an MMO because it's all equations. You minimize the effect that lag can have on the system because the actual positions and actions of the players matter a lot less than the times that they hit their kill button and who's timer ended first. This is why MMOs can be massively multiplayer. The players aren't as significant.
My opinion, we don't need all of this junk. Have a dagger that attacks faster and does less damage, and a 2 handed sword that attacks slowly and does a lot of damage. These will be other options to the sword we have now. No shields, no area damage, just pure killing with the only advantage coming from skill and the quality of your equipment. Maybe, maybe blocking with your weapon.

I think that when you equip a sword, the camera should change. Still 1st person, but different. You have a area which is a square in the middle of the screen where if you move your mouse and it stays inside it, your swords crosshairs would move positions. If it was at the top, over the head swing. Sides would be swing. And front is stab. Your opponent can see where you are going to attack, as your sword moves around. If you both did the same move, no damage for either person. Would be a very cool way of doing it.

We don't quite need all the ideas, but we do need these categories to be filled:
Regular weapon: Sword
Fast Weapon: Dagger
Heavy Weapon: Heavy Sword
Regular Ranged: Bow
Quick Ranged: Crossbow
Heavy Ranged possibly
Awesome Punching Knives: Katars
Defense other than just dodging attacks: Shields
Ability to have two items at once: Left hand slot
Night Fighting while on the go: Lantern
Shields will be most effective against ranged, and cannot be wielded while using a heavy sword, or ranged weapon. They will not protect much against swords or Heavy swords. Daggers will be able to be poisoned if poison is implemented.
My system creates a balance between defense, power, and speed of attacking, with no ideal formula. Personally, if there is a hotkey to switch right and left hand items, I would hold a poisoned dagger in one hand and a shield in the other while charging, so I could block arrows and poison them easily. I would then switch the shield for a sword, using the sword for attacks and the dagger during the sword cooldown. But there are other strategies.

If shields make arrows useless until the shield breaks, then shields will make arrows useless full stop. So far all the ideas for shields I've heard make the game sound like it'd be worse with them.

I believe combat is going to be more tactical then you think. Its not like its turn based final fantasy 7 or something.
I think it's mostly going to be about numbers, equipment, and ambushing instead of reflexes or tactics.

My idea is that the shield blocks most of the arrow damage, but doesn't stop you being pushed back when hit and makes you stop moving forward, so you can't block and get to the person attacking you at the same time. Plus, it wouldn't work well against melee weapons. You can't really argue against shields unless you think that defense against someone shooting at you should be erratic movement so they can't hit you and deal 2 damage per hit before you can even reach them.

I agree; the first strike can be the difference between an easy kill and almost dying. If three people manage to get 30 diamond between them and some arrows, they can charge one or two people in diamond plating with diamond swords, and massacre them. If one person gets 26 diamond alone, they can get full diamond armor and a diamond sword, so they could take down one person by themselves, and possibly two people if he got in a good ambush and they didn't have much armor.
I think chainmail is going to come out in MP, because it is meant to deflect arrows (or swords, I forget).
Chainmail isn't very good against arrows or daggers (small stabbing points), but swords and axes it could defend against. Hammers/maces would be a problem, too.
I'm not sure when you mention crossbows as quick ranged weapons, do you mean as shooting many arrows/bolts or as in has the fastest moving shots?
Because I'm pretty sure a crossbow takes quite a long time to reload
Crossbows don't take all that long to reload, actually. They're certainly slower than, say, a longbow, but not by all that much, if the user has proper equipment (a stirrup and windlass).
Maille was not "almost resistant" to arrows. It was effective armor for its time in part because most weapons were not designed to pierce. Swords in the early medieval period were not designed for thrusting - cut-and-thrust swords did not became popular until the late 1400s. Maille was expensive and fairly rare on the battlefield, so there was no need to design piercing weapons until armor became more common. Most combatants wore gambesons or leathers, against which slashing weapons were more effective. That said, arrows and spears could pierce maille and burst the links apart, even if a sword or axe would have difficulty severing them.
Man, for melee combat, I'd like to see blocking and parrying. Dodging is already there by using the direction keys. But if you attacked someone at the same time as they attacked you, it could parry the attack, like sword fighting. And then you could right-click block with a shield. That's how I'd do that. And then I'd have several types of weapons with different ranges and damage types. Like maces wrecking the heck out of plate armor, and spears having longer striking range than daggers.

They wouldn't let you die if you were in need of hatching!
Your bones would break pretty easily, and hemorrhage.
What if someone hit you with a sword, in combat?
You would get large flesh woulds.

No! I disagree, the heavy weapon should be a giant hammer!

The shield IS a weapon with somewhat low damage but high knockback and blocks while right clicking.
It would be the best Halo ever.
Isn't that Halo Reach?
Bah.
Combat = Clicky Clicky.
Too tired to elaborate.
