Hello all! I wonder if you've noticed this rough spot in minecraft's armour, weapons and tools . (Before you read, this is mainly about a new ore to fill in a small slot. No probs?)
Lets see if you get it before I tell you:
Gold weapons/tools--- Gold Armour
Wooden weapons/tools--- Leather Armour
Stone weapons/tools--- ??? Armour
Iron weapons/tools--- Iron Armour
Diamond weapons/tools--- Diamond Armour
So, as you see right here, there is a gap. Now, before we go any further, some people think chainmail is the armour equivalent of stone weapons and tools. Now they could be wrong, and they could be right. Chainmail only protects a little more than gold armour, but has the durability of iron armour. It can only be crafted with fire blocks (at the time of this thread's creation), so its not legitly obtainable. I've heard it can be traded from villagers in the current snapshot, but I have not seen it confirmed. And it was originally created by Notch as a simple test.
So assuming chainmail isnt the answer, what is? Obviously it cant be stone armour, as all the armours materials are slightly difficult to EXTREMELY difficult to obtain. I've heard of the so called "Emerald armour" idea, and it would be somewhat useful, but at the moment it is 25 times rarer then diamonds, so it would have to be very strong to balance out its rarity, AND it would be a tool/weapon class as well as a new armour class, so it wouldnt fix the gap.
The answer is to create a new ore, and one that isnt as rare as iron, but less easy to gain then the time it would take to murder a few cows. I was thinking something like onyx, a semi-common ore that wouldnt drop itself, but would drop 1-3 onyx shards which would be combined with wool to make studded cloth armour. (You'd combine 1 wool and 2 onyx shards to create 2 studded cloths, and then create the armour) Now since the shards are fairly common, its harder to obtain then leather as you'd have to either kill sheep or spiders (or cobwebs =P ) to make the studded cloth. I dont think it'd be to amazingly difficult to get, but I do understand it may be at times harder to get then iron, which just depends on your biome and base location.
Is this the best armour idea in the world? Of course not!! But either way, we need something to fill that little gap, whether its legit chainmail or a new armour. Thanks for reading.
Yeah renya, at the moment leather is kinda the armour equivalent of wooden AND stone tools, but to my frenzied mind there needs to be something to counteract the stone weapons/tools. And I must admit, chainmail does have an ugly look to it.
@O_Zippy Hahaha you had me stuck at my keyboard, thinking of a reply, for 4 minutes! I guess the only answer is it isnt really needed, just a personal thing. The pattern isnt really complete, unless you count leather armour as the equivalent for wood and stone, or if chainmails coming soon (hope not)
New issue: Why are the weakest armours the hardest to get? Iron you can have easily in the course of exploration. Diamond you will inevitably be looking for. To get leather, you have to scour the land and breed cows. For chain, you have to find a village, find a villager who has it, and earn enough to buy it. This makes sense how?
@AnonTheMouse Yet another problem. The reason of for this is that mobs are not stationary (like ores), and you dont know where exactly they'll spawn. Usually by the time you find enough cows to make a full set of leather armour, you'll already have a full stack of iron ingots. I have spawned in large areas filled to the brim with pigs and cows, but you are correct. So does this mean iron armour should be slightly weaker to make way for an slightly easier to get armour?
An overall better solution is downgrade Iron items slightly, and then fill the gap with an alternative. I've made the suggestion before about adding Steel as the tier between Iron and Diamond, since it avoids the problems created by new ore types.
Steel:
- Refined from Iron and Coal
- Obtained through refinement rather then adding a new block type
- Doesn't interfere with the iron supply (which has a wide number of crafting uses)
- Effort to obtain can be controlled through pre-requisites for refinement
-- First pass at this involved a lava bucket and a furnace upgrade (both of which are reasonably difficult to obtain in early game)
- The concept can be reapplied with other materials, since technically its a just 2-input, 1-output smelting process.
Right, how about only being able to obain it from trading with villagers? That would make chain armour the first armour not makeable by yourself. It would be more special and more populair. If some of the villagers also equiped chain armour pieces wich make them harder to kill, it would be even more fun in my opinion!
Yeah I get were you're coming from, but villages are uber hard to find without superflat, and it just doesnt seem... Idk minecrafty? The idea of some villagers with armour is much more desirable, but perhaps a second type of villager who does the work of those stupid iron golems? A basic guard?

I've heard a lot of talk about a "steel" project/concept, and imo its not all that bad. The way you've set it up seems legit. An upgraded furnace though? I dont think so. (What would be the point other then creating steel?) A lava bucket would make sense, but simply re-smelting iron with coal seems a little lazy, there needs to be a second ingredient more difficult to obtain then coal. But you are on the right track. (Which reminds me, if we have a flint and steel why is it crafted with a flint and iron? 0_o) But then what? What else would we need steel for? Iron basically crafts about all conventional metallic items (except power rails and the like)
Now you said to downgrade iron and fill the gap with an alternative, which you proposed at steel. Excuse me, but how would this fill the gap? There would still be leather for wood and stone, iron for iron, gold for gold, diamond for diamond, maybe chainmail, and now steel for steel. Unless somehow Steel is not as good as iron and only has a use for armour then it doesnt really fill the gap, but once again, good proposal.
One last paragraph An idea that just occurred to me is perhaps steel really is being made right now. It could possibly be the future legit ingredients to chainmail, and instead of flint + iron= flint and steel it would be flint + steel= flint and steel. So chainmail from steel, and steel weapons and tools. Doesnt fill the little gap, but sounds really cool. ( So long as they update chainmails ugly looks)
So we're now hiding our new ore topics by titling them as something else? Obfuscation isn't going to prevent your topic from getting shot down any faster. Your essentially suggesting another ore, one weaker than diamond, to fill in a non-existent need in the game because you think there should be more ores or you don't like the aesthetics of existing ore armors. Switch out your texture packs if it's an issue, don't go adding useless ores.

I am suggesting another ore, one weaker then diamond and iron. I dont think there should be more ores if it can be avoided (I.E. "Steel"), but I mainly want to see the pattern completed. And you have one thing wrong, I dont mind the armour aesthetics. All are fine except chainmail, which I do mind, as its basically just a heap of mesh shaped somewhat like armour and thrown carelessly over your body. And your last sentence confuses me, Im not adding any ores, useless or not.

You don't see anywhere in the OP where your adding new ores? Did you write this or just copy someone else's locked post and didn't bother to read it all the way through?

You misunderstand. I am SUGGESTING we have a new ore, I'm not making this myself. And your last sentence was slightly insulting, as I took the time to type this out myself.

Why exactly is this "needed"?
