Adventure mode is awesome. But not being able to break blocks does limit the types of games and puzzles you can make. Here's an idea for how to have breakable blocks in any game mode:
CRACK BLOCKS
A crack doesn't look like a block. It's a two-dimensional visual effect you can place on the side of any other solid block, the same way you can place torches or vines. It makes the block its on look cracked and fractured.
Aside from being a cool visual effect, cracks would be breakable in any mode. Including adventure mode. When you break a crack, you also destroy the block it's mounted on, eradicating it without a drop.
A crack gains the hardness of the block its currently on, so a crack on dirt breaks very quickly while a crack on obsidian takes a while to break and is explosion proof. You can place cracks on bedrock but the crack will be unbreakable.
You have to be able to see and click on a crack to break it. So if a wall only has cracks on one side, you can't bust through from the other side (unless you're in survival or creative mode of course, in which case you can break the block normally).
So if you're an adventure map designer, you can place cracks in strategic places to allow players to destroy those blocks. Great for hiding secret rooms, having smash loot by unblocking chests, and many other fun applications.
I think making cracks a new block that can go on anything is better than having cracked versions of blocks, since it prevents you from needing a new cracked block variety for each block in the game.

Well, it's more of a variable. I agree, there should be special things you can break. I haven't tried Adventure Mode yet, however.

And you could have cracks that drop the block as well

Another idea for Adventure mode.. there could also be an option to set what blocks are breakable, like say.. gravel or clay could be set to breakable. (Clay seems to be a common block people are allowed to break to collect "bonus point" material, via hidden chest.) I don't know how this could work, but that sounds better than cracks imo. Just simply have an option to set what blocks are breakable.

"I don't plan to add a new dimension at the moment. It's just to performance heavy on servers, and the current dimensions need more attention before we start adding new ones." < Yeah, like biomes or actual varied terrain in the nether. Nether ruins didn't do the trick at all.
How about so that instead of cracks on different blocks affect how long it takes to break, but the different stages of cracks affect it?
Of course, stone bricks would still break slower than, say, sand, but if the stone brick has more cracks in it than sand, it would break faster.

That's a good idea and it might be easier to code. It has the downside of needing more varieties of crack block, but it saves the effort of programming the crack to "read" it's block and copy the hardness.
Actually, I guess it's fine if the cracked blocks drops items when broken with the correct tool. It would let people mine in adventure mode.
I initially said it shouldn't drop loot since people can't place blocks in adventure, but that doesn't really matter. If they get blocks they can't place they can always just throw them away. And it would let them get stuff like diamonds and apples.
When I saw your topic, my first thought was, "This guy is a fool. The entire purpose of adventure maps is for blocks to not be broken and therefor allow the possibility of mazes and traps without cheating."
However, after reading your idea I was rather intrigued. It is very simple, and very well thought through. In the context of creative mode users placing the crack blocks they could decide what blocks they want the player to break. It is a simple and effective idea and I fully support it.
Sounds good. And there are already crack images in the terrain.png, the ones seen when breaking a block, so this block could just borrow those images for its texture (though it may look a bit weird when breaking it )
This is a great idea. In the current adventure mode the only way to make secret rooms is through use of pistons which is annoying and takes ages.
Pistons are rather easy, I don't know what everybody's problem is with redstone.
In any case, this is a rather great idea.
If this goes through to a mod/the game, you, Sir Hexadron, win the internet. Not explorer though, you win like Google Chrome internet.

Instead of just saying "No", could you please be helpful and explain why you disagree with this excellent idea?
Ah! That is a similar idea! Good thinking.
