You can pluck feathers from chickens? I didn't know that! Lol. yeah I was bored when I made this thread, so it's half joking, but I also wanted to get people talking about other ways to collect items from animals. Like, what if you could use shears to harvest the leather from cows without having to kill them, then you'd still be able to milk them. Or be able to use villagers as a renewable food source. They'd drop "strange meat"
Or what if you could harvest meat from the animals without having to kill them? Each time you hit a pig you'd cut off a pork chop. Or be able to use shears on a cow and be able to cut off a few steaks without having to harm the cow.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say you're just saying that to overcome some of the negative posts you've been getting.

...Yeah... One does not acquire leather from a cow from just "shearing" it...

What the hell..?

I'm sorry that I'm being a **** here, but that might be the dumbest thing I've ever read on these forums. I don't think it's physically possible to "cut off a few steaks from a cow without harming it".
Oh my ****ing god. The fact this is even being argued over makes my head hurt. Three words: DEAL. WITH. IT.
It's a game, not real life. Evident by this particular line: "current system sets a bad example for children to play and think it is OK to kill animals." - Kids are not stupid, contrary to common belief. They are able to differentiate between reality and fantasy. It's the same damn argument people make about "games make you violent!" When I was growing up, I was playing a plumber that ate mushrooms and flowers, stomped on turtles, and threw hammers. Don't see me doing any of that now, now do you? No.
And the trend before that? Dungeons & Dragons. And before that? Rock music. It's just as ridiculous now as it was back then. I'll be sending you the bill for my medical care after I have my face rearranged from the sheer volume of kinetic energy that ruptured the muscles due to an extraordinary acceleration and velocity of my hand.
Animals aren't blamed for things that it would be wrong for humans to do. Why? Because animals aren't self aware, and act from instinct. Humans are self aware, know what they are doing, and can morally reflect on it. So again, you can't reason from us not blaming animals to us not blaming people (remember, animals kill humans too...).
Hanabiko the gorilla understands English and can communicate in ASL. A horse can be taught arithmetic. Apes and Cephalopods are widely known to learn through observation and (in some cases) experimentation. I've even seen housecats that would respond to spoken requests like "let me know when you're done". The belief that animals do not possess sapience is debatable at best, and in some cases almost certainly wrong.

... You really should've just stayed gone...
So... Killing an animal is bad, but torturing an animal is ok as long as you don't kill it. Because we all know that if you rip my arm off, no harm will come to me and it'll regrow in short order. You need food? Just use scissors and chop it from my ribs, it won't harm me. Remember kids, you can rape the woman as much as you want, ripping skin and flesh from her; but don't kill her. That's definitely bad.
That is most absurd argument I have ever heard, and definitely teaches more bad than good. Just stop.

I am SO glad you noticed that argument and not me. I think my faith in humanity died a little from seeing that, and I doubt I could say all that's wrong with it as civilly.

I wish I had the faith in humanity to allow it to die. The op really should reconsider his position and proposal.

How does that prove they are aware of their existance?
Ok, the store Idea I kind of like. However when you said "in real life." I got a little twitchy. In real life, when you buy leather, that leather came from a dead animal... Also the store would need to be perfectly balanced. I suppose the store could be npc run, but what about when players play without structures, or what about if you can't find a store? Some issues with it, but it is mainly an interesting idea.
Players should not be forced to have to kill animals to get items like, meat, fathers, leather. There should be some kind of store in a village you can buy these goods from. Why should you have to murder innocent animals just to get food or leather? It is 2012 and minecraft should represent that. Just like real life, minecraft should have the option to buy these items without any animals being harmed.
Why kill a cow for its leather or meat when you can just go to a store and buy it without any animals being harmed? The game needs a store you can buy items from.
I know some may dissagree, but the current system sets a bad example for children to play and think it is OK to kill animals.
I just looked at your profile and it said HUNTING. Isn't hunting considered killing?

It gets a result.

Killing animals is a necessity at survival.
I just don't like killing spiders because they are friendly in the morning ^.^
HOLY ****... That's an overwhelming response in such a short time.
I think this thread should be locked now. There's not really much left to discuss in it; the OP has been chased out of town anyway.

Also, you are obviously a PETA member hippie.

...So then, Testificates can extract raw meat from animals without killing them?
Well, THAT sounds alot better than killing a cow and tearing chunks off it's dead body, Now dunnit?
Wow. I am thoroughly impressed.
