Does not lead to any interesting topic related to culture, history or science.
Not a curiosity bait.
Even fictional things with references lead to something, for example, Drowned that relate to Slavic Mythology, or Netherite that connects with alloying.

Dwarf gamer found:
Buildings - square, not round
Materials - from rubble mound
Dark caves - lit 'n' cleaned out
Settlements - deep underground
Farmability - to grinder bound
Shields - made creepers but sound
Axes and crossbows - taking mobs out
And? Not every mob has to lead to an "interesting topic related to culture, history or science". Honestly, I don't think that would even be a positive if that was a property of a mob lol, it's just kinda meh.
Take the strider, shulker, creeper, enderman or guardian for example. None of them is really connected to history or culture in any way, but the strider, shulker, guardian and probably the enderman are all good mobs in terms of game design.

Well, it's still a good point on the design to be related to other things.
The ones you mentioned overshadow this with their superior design.
Fanfish... well, here go my points besides the 2.
Lack of reference does not automatically knock the idea out, but it's better for the reference to be present than not.
Also, Enderman is Slenderman expy.
Both were created to rouse fear, share quite a few traits to achieve that, and the final name of the former directly stems from name of the latter - sl-enderman.

I wouldn't say the fan fish is a bad idea because it's not referencing something. It's a cool idea. Just because it doesn't reference some culture or bit of history doesn't mean it's automatically a bad idea. From what I saw, it's a fish with a fan that would create whirlpools and I'm guessing it would drag down a player to attack them or let the water finish the job. Similar to that giant squid mob they revealed a few years back.
Why is that a negative?
