With the addition of editable books to minecraft I think we might finally have an opportunity for a practicle application for boockshelves. What if right clicking on a bookshelf would open up a chest-like interface in which books can be stored, just as items are stored in a chest. What do you think?
yeah probably 4-5 would be god and I think that this is pretty likely to happen but i would still like to be able to craft the book shelves the original way for a shelf filled but with no actual books in it. Maybe we should be able to crate empty bookshelves which get filled as we put books in them?
I think a bookshelf should store either four or nine books so that the grid of storage is a square. It should also store maps as well, and you should be allowed to view the contents of the book or map without having to remove it from the bookshelf.

I think that's a great idea. Maybe two recipes? One for the standard bookcases for casual decor and an empty bookcase frame for actual book storage.

Yes it is a good idea, although I suggest it being able to hold 4 books and the bookshelf would have 5 textures; one for an empty state; one for with one book in it; one for with two books in it; etc.
If something like this does happen, I wouldn't be surprised if there were random books with text already written in them in the bookshelves in those stronghold libraries. Maybe in villages as well.
I am personally hoping that Bookshelves could have two different recipes, One made from plain books, and another from written books. The Written Book recipe would act as a chest that holds those three books (You can take them out of course), and the original doesn't. That way you can have Normal Bookshelves as a normal block without having to deal with the fact that you'd click into the bookshelves if you tried to place one Book shelve on another.
I think it would be cool if the books could store EXP I know they are not as useless now with the book and quill but it would be awesome if they did that
OT: I think this is a good idea though, it would help if they held books

I would love for the player to "store" a written book in a bookshelf, and then when you right click the different bookshelf with a empty book you "copy" that information onto the empty book. This would be incredibly useful for servers.
Perhaps add a popup tool tip like when a record starts playing to show what book is in what bookshelf.
People keep saying they'd like 4 or 9 books per shelf, but why not have it be 3 books, ALREADY THERE? You've used 3 books to craft the bookshelf, why not be able to take the books back out afterwards? This would also allow you to craft your stories right into a bookshelf, without having to put them in afterwards.
Well at least in my mind, I can see 9 being the max number of books per shelf, just because thats what it looks like when I look at the current bookshelf image. Does anyone else have a problem with signed books glowing like enchanted items, or is that just me? I know they have to look different from unpublished books, but I dont want that glow.
Now if there was only some way to copy them, as in 100 users could take one book from a bookshelf and it would still be there for others to take, as in something on a server with a purpose

That actually makes a lot more sense... Use three books to craft and then be able to place up to 3 books

I agree with you and the idea for bookshelves as a storage space for books.
I was wondering: This may be hard to do, but instead of right-clicking a bookshelf and getting a chest-like interface, why not we right-click a bookshelf with a book and the book goes from the hand into the bookshelf? And if we need to get a book, we can just hover our mouse over said book, get he information of the book and right-click on the book and get it back?

Hmmm being able to craft bookshelves without books would be a good step considering the cost increase in books themselves. If they can store books that would really even things out a bit.

^ Great idea!
If you put some books in, it would turn into a bookshelf
