Yes, I considered that idea when i made this topic, but simpler isn't always the best. It has to be creative and challenging based on the rarity of an item. "wrapping" a light source with colored blocks to create colored light ensures that people cant just spam with colored light and that they have to think strategically and creatively within their space to create colored light.
In other words, simplifying it down to just simply adding dye to a torch or adding dye to a glowstone block removes the fun. -_^
Well, I gritted my teeth and came up with a prototype.
The main problem with this is that "light" doesn't update properly, and gets out of sync, because it's in sync with the chunks instead of blocks. Also, I think it'll be difficult for me to go any further because of the level of math involved.

I agree, Minecraft has always had a habit of making block placement require strategy. Why change that now? I think Minecraft needs to add more strategy in the game, as personally, I feel it doesn't have enough. Which is why I'm glad that they're adding a lot more redstone stuff in 1.5, as this will allow for more strategic designs.

Wow this is amazing, Kovu! Is this done with the current lighting engine, or did you have to make some adjustments to it? As i know some people who tried to do this earlier in the topic was unable to get more than 2 colors working.
Also if it isn't too much to ask, would it be possible if you could try the 'wrapping' technique i posted in the OP? I understand that for testing purposes, using colored redstone lamps is ideal but it would be interesting to see colored glass and light working together. -_^ I believe the poster above has a good point regarding colored red stone lamps.
Also, do you mind if I add this into the op?
edit* can you post a screenshot at night? o_o that would look beautiful
sorry about all the questions and requests, I'm just so excited to see this :3

Night screenie:
Had to do a bit of editing, wasn't built on night yet, but the implementation was fairly simple.

Oh cool, I would love to use this in my current builds!
So what about my other questions? Would you be fine with me posting this in the op, credited to you of course. :3
And about the implementation of colored glass, is that something that's possible or...?

Do whatever you want with it.
Not sure about the colored glass thing. Theoretically, it could be done, but it'd require a LOT of calculations.
I really like this idea i think u should try to get Notch and Jeb to add it to another Minecraft update.

We are the MCModSquad! We make minecraft mods, we do tutorials, survivals, let's builds, let's plays, minigames, animations, what don't we do in minecraft?
This is super epic and would be totally cool if it was added to the game! But Mojang would have to completely redo the lighting engine... it would take time but worth it. If they remade the lighting engine it would fix the shadows!
One can only hope.... It is possible that it just might actually, given the circumstances....
I'm doubtful, perhaps the coloured (I'm Aussie, that is the correct spelling xD) glass, yes, but not the coloured light, I'm not expecting a re-write of the lighting code 'til the Mod API is implemented. I mean, Dinnerbone tried to fix the lighting system before (The slabs/stairs lighting issues etc.) and he did, but it basically screwed a ton of other stuff so he scrapped it.
Great idea but would it make more sense to color the glass not the sand? (just saying) But I still give Full Support!
OP did say this would kill two birds with one stone, which is why I support that method of making colored glass. Also for the sense part if you meant realism then smelting colored sand would kind of make more sense.

Yes, if it doesn't get implemented anytime soon, I'm pretty confident that it will eventually. Just based on the unmatched support the idea of colored class and colored light has had for years (even before my topic). I think what it really comes down to is the evolution of technology. This goal will grow more probable as time passes.
