OK, so we all know that paper is made from trees, so why the heck do we have to gather sugar cane to make paper?! Bookselves have a use now, and finding and growing sugar cane can be very time-consuming. Simply replace the three suger canes on the bottom of the crafting table with logs, and I will be happy.
why cant trees drop wood chips when you cut them down and you could craft these wood chips into some sort of bulk wood chip/ scrap of paper and you put 4 of these in a crafting table and boom paper, we cant just cut out papyrus, it's used in cakes.
This makes a lot of sense.
And as far as people saying sugar cane will become nearly useless...
Isn't sugar an ingredient in potions?
Sugar cane has more uses than some things. For goodness sake, clays only use is for making bricks.
I really think it could do without the ability to make paper.

Yes, but bricks are a common building block, at least for me they are. Speed potions are great and all, but I think every item in Minecraft should have at least two uses, except for music disks.
I disagree with the OP, I think that if logs are the new Sugar Cane it'd make Sugar Cane almost totally useless.

remember sugar cane was reeds before the cake, and technically papyrus (the first paper) was made from such reeds. It's also worth noting that making paper fro fibrous plants like reeds and certain others is much more efficient than tree pulp.

"Shall I craft you a ladder to help you off that high horse now?"
No, sugar canes are easy-to-farm.
Just make a farm or at least find a sugarcane,Place it into a near water source, when it grow up,harvest and replant again.
I got a hella lot of sugarcanes now.
In case you didn't know, its actually supposed to be hard to make paper. making it craftable from tress makes it easier. Besides, making paper from trees is harder than making it from papyrus in real life ( minecraft is some what realistic ).
It only restores 4 hunger point's It takes 20 to fill it. And 1 cooked porkchop(which I might add is renewable if you count the breeding) is worth 8 cookies which I might also add are not renewable.
