So I've noticed Mincrafts placement of ores is pretty much random, that's fine for the game as it is but i'd love to see more geologically based placement e,g.
Dirt
Gravel
Stone
etc following the natural progression on earth, where gravel is essentually a mid step between soil and stone
Following geology could provide clues to miners about what they're about to dig into, no more surprise floods.. IF you pay attention to the materials.
Additional note, Diamonds:
Diamonds are formed from coal under heat and pressure, so a lump of coal laden stone surrounded by other coal laden stones should I feel have a chance to be 'promoted' during world creation to diamond.
btb,I fully understand that diamonds are ment to be rare and 'endgame' stuff, I think the rarity can be maintained while embedding them with coal. I'm a student of geology myself so the fact that there is
A. No seemingly natural progresstion of materials
B. Not even a hint of association between coal and diamond
irks me a bit ~shrugs~

MineCraft: a game in which Adults and kids play together with blocks
"Shall I craft you a ladder to help you off that high horse now?"
Coal is infact carbon, this is why it makes such an excellent fuel, and puts off a lot of CO2 when burned. you may be correct about the complications in world creations preventing this though, may be something for a third party map editor to handle.

Coal is carbon, but also a mixture of a bunch of other things. Even if it were that simple to create diamonds, they'd be too small for any non-industrial applications, or to impure for even anything else.
I'd think everyone would have realized a long time ago that minecraft =/= reality. It's based on it, and there are a few parallels, but they by no means have to have everything in common. In some ways, realism and the established mechanics simply can't coexist.

It's carbon.
(Though coal might exactly be carbon. I'm not a geological expert..)
As some criticising...
The idea is unneeded. Plus, I doubt Mojang could do this, as world generation isn't perfect.
