Right now it takes a tree a while to grow, and once it grows, it does it all at once. My idea is for it to take about the same amount of time to grow, but do it in stages like wheat, pumpkins, and melons do. You could harvest the tree earlier, but you would get less wood and only a full grown tree could produce apples.
Perhaps it could look like this:
This would look even better with leaf half blocks.
What do you guys think?
This would be good, but it would be difficult to implement. Perhaps the single sapling could change appearance within its own block, eventually becoming solid before growing into a tree?
I dont have a sig or an avatar. (Except that (V), which is for Science! You monster.) They're like my name. Immaterial.

Yes! This would be a great addition. Perhaps bone meal could only grow it one stage, since bones are fairly easy to acquire at night anyway, and you get three for every bone.

Possible, but to much of a hassle.I want a full grown tree,if i wanted to wait
then i may as well just go out into the forest.
The OP said VERY SPECIFICALLY that the overall time between sapling and fully grown would be the exact same.

This is a frickin brilliant idea! I'd love to see this put in the game in place of the sudden and very surprising growth of a tree right in front of you! You should try to twitter Jeb or something about this!!!!
I love the Idea, as long as bonemeal still make it fully grown straight away...
Yes, I think bone meal would work the same, or as someone else said perhaps it takes 2 bone meal or something. I was mostly talking about naturally growing trees. one other Idea I had was for dropped saplings that fall and are not picked up for some amount of time to implant where they fell just the way seeds from falling trees would do.
If you mean "Naturally" as in when the world generates, that would cause to much lag due to every tree
doing "on Block.update".And what do you mean seeds from falling trees?
No, trees that are fixed on generation would not be affected because they are already grown, although I guess you could have a few trees here ant there as saplings. I was just talking about the growing process being natural, as in not stimulated by bone meal.
The problem is that the game don't consider Trees as Trees. It consider Trees as an amalgam of Wood Blocks and Leaf Blocks.
So, at first, Mojang would have to programm a script that allow the game to recognize Trees, like they did to Houses.
I don't agree. The program knows everything in the game by block id. When you place a sapling on the ground you can still see the outline of the full block. Once the sapling is placed on the ground, the algorithm checks for space around and above the block, if enough space is present it starts a countdown and then grows all at once. what I am suggesting is this take place in stages, rather than all at once. Another example of this already in the game would cactus and sugarcane, both grow over time, but still yield blocks when punched. This would work the same way, you could wait until it is fully grown and get maximum yield, or sooner and get less. Perhaps in the 1st stages it would give 1 block, then 2, then 3 until fully grown.

Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.
Please click the dragons, they need to grow. Also, my fully grown dragons can be found in my bio.
Yes, no more death by tree!
