Uh, yeah. Carbon compresses under strenuous heat to form highly compressed crystaline structures of nearly indestructible durability; however, the amount of pressure necessary to turn raw graphite/coke/coal into diamond is more than can be produeced with MODERN machinery, let alone minecraft era fare.
It's only recently that we could create diamonds or other gemstones, and the cost of production is to the point where it matches the cost to simply hew it from terra firma.

I'm quitting the game as soon as diamonds can be made. Isn't that a bit... "TROLOLOL I GOT DIAMONDS IN 3 DAYS!!!" I have MULTIPLE double chests of coal.

That's exactly what I thought. Can't even figure out where 729 came from.
You had the 9 coal for the block, then you multiplied that by 9 to get 9 blocks, to equal 81, then you multiplied it by 9 probably thinking you still needed to multiply to get the blocks for the diamond.
Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.

With this someone could just skip from wood/stone to diamond.
It doesn't even take two stacks witch is less than I get on an average spelunking trip!
