I like it, it could be like the tropicraft mod Bamboo where you need 4 to make 1 block of bamboo and then the other things you suggested.
So I'm going to float a few thoughts on "Bamboo Blocks" that I've been developing privately and have hit a few snags.
The primary issue is I don't think there should be a solid "Block of Bamboo" like you would a block of wood or block of stone. I don't really picture that working very well or being very original. The rate that bamboo would grow would make any bamboo blocks added a much more valuable building material for quick building, despite it's flammability.
That said, I think there is a strong aesthetic value in having bamboo poles lashed together and placed horizontally like a raft. To that end, I'm working with the idea of creating a quasi Bamboo Half-Slab block so players can make bamboo roof beach huts with bamboo flooring or bamboo rafts that sit on top of water. Here are some problems I've run into:
Having a half-slab of something but not a full block is unprecedented, which breaks the traditional conventions of crafting the half slab
Placement would be different from other half-slabs as well. Unlike wood half slabs, the orientation you place it would matter because you would want all the polls running parallel in the direction you placed them. This is not unheard of, stairs already use these mechanics for placement. It's just new for a half-slab like block
Because of the deviation from regular half slabs, I felt I need to include a mechanic that makes them unique and gives them a utility purpose. For that goal, I'm considering allowing bamboo half slab rafts to be place-able on water (as I was considering above) as if they were lily pads to make constructing floating platforms in large bodies of water easier (current systems would require a block tower from the ocean bottom to the surface or using lily pads)
I'm probably going to drop this idea for now and take it up latter, hopefully with feedback. In the mean time, I have a few other ideas I'll work on, such as Bamboo Fishing Poles and a possible unique bamboo weapon like a Bo Staff or Bamboo Spear.
I support most of the ideas but I think the smoke bomb recipee should be:
N-I-N
N-C-N
N-B-N
N nothing
I ink sack
C coal
B bamboo
Coal instead of Gunpowder would make it too easy to manufacture/obtain in large quantities. I made it crafted with gunpowder/glowstone to make it only obtainable late game to prevent rampant abuse. Also, I use 3 bamboo poles to justify allowing the recipe to yield 3-4 smoke bombs per crafting, so even though you can only obtain them late game, you can still make them without using a ton of valuable resources. I may or may not change glowstone to blaze powder for aesthetic/logical reasons when I get around to revising the OP.
You mean Chinese.
Also, I support this idea. Bamboo should somehow be an alternative to sticks in crafting, except in certain items (i.e, Bows).
He was responding to a post that a moderator determined inappropriate/racist and was subsequently deleted. In that post, the person was talking about how "Minecraft r not Japaneses" and Nexus_Leonon was telling him no, in fact the game is played and enjoyed world wide.
Also, as I've stated before, Bamboo poles are not the equivalent of sticks. I updated the art for them to these round, fencepost like diameter materials. The goal to getting anything added is to make it unique and making bamboo poles a redundant recipe for anything with sticks in it hurts this goal.
Edited OP. Reorganized the crafting recipes and mechanics sections to provide more emphasis on the main 3 recipes for bamboo (Scaffolding, Punji spikes, and Fireworks).
Next I'm going to update the three core crafting recipes, including making scaffolding craft-able using vines as an alternative to string, but yielding less scaffolding (because vines are easier to obtain/farm then string).
Updated OP with edits regarding bamboo properties (to make them read easier and more consciously), Bamboo Scaffolding (updates to the crafting recipe to include a vine crafting recipe as well as cleaning up the description), as well as a few other edits in some of the sections.
I want to float this idea before adding it to the OP. This would be another crucial Bamboo recipe, Bamboo Slabs.
The main issue is I want to add the slab but not a solid bamboo block. A solid bamboo block wouldn't have much use other than aesthetics, but to suggest adding a half slab block that does not have a solid block counterpart violates a very strong trend present in Minecraft.
One way to solve this is to make the solid bamboo block a block with vertically oriented bamboo (4 stalks per side) so you can make beach cabana walls or whatever. When you craft it into a half slab, you only have 2 horizontal rows of bamboo that you can use to make roofing, cabana floors, or ocean rafts.
A unique utility of bamboo blocks and half slabs would be you could place them on water like a Lilly pad, which would make it a good tool for building ocean platforms, even if you aren't going to have bamboo in them.
I need to do everything I can to make this a strong item because up to now I didn't want to add it due to redundancy. So I have to really do a good job making it unique, useful, and different without breaking existing Minecraft conventions.
If I could illustrate this concept, I would, but I don't have very good texture drawing skills and I haven't found a bamboo pattern that I could modify or use. Please point me to a texture pack or packs with bamboo textures, I'd appreciate it.
I would rather have the the Tropicraft bambooand some of its purposes.
I looked at some Youtube videos on Tropicraft. The only recipes I saw for bamboo was a bamboo plank. Not very original and nothing unique. I don't even really like their textures.
it seems... nice, but it would most likely be in hard to reach places. bamboo fences could be nice. it can also be used for that spike block thing yes? wow i'm tired......
I like the idea of making poles out of bamboo. I think it would be great for aesthetic purposes. It would definitely look nicer on a lamp than using fence posts. And I love the idea of making a smoke bomb from the bamboo!
One word. Support. I like this idea, not only cause it adds something new, but because it'd make a nice aesthetic thing to Minecraft, which it in my opinion needs. Plus maby they can add flutes made of bamboo, just as a nice way of new unique intraments. (I stink at spelling. Sorry)
You could even use flutes to order your tamed mobs. (maby pandas could be powerful tamed mobs. They are bears, and would be a bit rare)

Brainstorm! As a new boat, which bigger boats and stuff are rumored to be implemented, you could make a bamboo boat! It could be sorta bigger that the normal one, and able to carry some cargo, but difficult to build. Speed is debatable.

Thank You! I so Need a damage Block that is non flame related but unlike cactus is placable anywhere. Support
Thank you for the support. Keep in mind that the while the punji block is useful and cheap to make, it won't be as versatile as a proper spike block that Jeb and Dinnerbone have expressed interest in adding. It fills a niche functionally better than cactus, cheaper than iron spike blocks, and without using flame like lava or fire.
So even if this thread doesn't gain any attention, I don't think you'll have to worry about a proper spike block being added to the game. That's my hope at least and there has been strong evidence to support it.

Fences I've put down because it would only be unique aesthetically. Instead I opted for a pole block that abandons the adjoining block snap feature so you can have more freedom with your creations. You could still make a pole boundary line, but it would only stop large mobs from passing through.... IDEA; a fence system you can easily place to keep Iron Golems inside a village limits. Make it 2 blocks high to prevent jumping No more solid block fences, ditches, or free roaming Iron Golems.

Flutes are a possibility, if they provide a defined utility purpose. I don't want to emulate other ideas like guitars, ocarinas, or pianos, where people are proposing fully playable instruments in game (I won't waste time explaining why). The flute or perhaps pan flute would probably be a tool (without durability) that can be used to entrance, calm, or tame mobs by holding down the right button to make it play. Little note particles (like note blocks) would emanate from it and a melodic tune would play.
This is a good strong suggestion, but it requires a consensus on what it would do before I would add it to the OP. Things like:
Taming a new mob that was added (possibly a panda mob)
Relax mobs to prevent then from moving or flailing around (unless they were like stabbed or something)
Separate baby animals from mature animals
Lull certain aggressive guardian mobs to sleep to allow passage or an initial attack (after which they will become enraged and won't be pacified again)
A good idea, I'll credit you if it makes it to the OP, but I need the details established first.

Bamboo boats have been suggested before in this thread, though not as a larger boat, simply a weaker but faster boat or something around those lines. I can't say I'm a fan of making larger boats because that set's an unprecedented standard in Minecraft for transport entities taking up more than a single block of space. I'll keep it in mind, but unless Mojang sets a new standard by adding a 2x2 magic carpet or some other large vehicle (not advocating either idea), I think such a bold idea would make Bamboo loose traction rather than add to it. Things like spike blocks doing damage, a block you can climb, or an item that emits particle effects all have mechanics you can point to in the game and say (it's like that). And while this is similar to the boat and mine cart, I've read too many issues with make these things larger.
I belive it might fitt into the djungle biome.
Whats the rate of grown? Giant bambo can grow realy fast I belive I heard.
i heard that one of the torture methods of the ancient japanese is to strap a man to the ground with a bamboo stalk growing underneath him, and it would eventually grow right through him. creepy, huh?
