Alright, I've got an idea, and it's good. Check it out:
Spiders are neutral during the daytime. This is pretty sweet. However, one night I saw a SKELETON RIDING A SPIDER.
THAT WAS KICKASS.
Then I thought about it, and I was like- dude, I can fire a bow like a skeleton. I can place ladders and climb like a spider, I can punch down doors like zombies, I can run around and jump and make slurpy, annoying noises like slimes.
Why can't I ride spiders?
During the daylight, you'll need two things: Nether Wart and a saddle.
This means that if you want to be a spider-rider, you must first travel into the Nether, come back alive with some Nether Wart, and then find a dungeon with a saddle in the chest. "OMG SPIDER RIDING IS OVER POWERED" does not apply any more. Any OP-ness you may feel is part of the reward for your blood, sweat and tears.
You wave around the Nether Wart in front of the spider if it's neutral (it can't be aggressive at the time), and right click it. The spider does not start to follow you around, however, it will no longer despawn or become aggressive at night - pretty much the same as a less clingy pet wolf or ocelot. It won't attack enemies for you, though.
Then you put the saddle on your spider friend. This spider is now way cooler than any kind of horse, pig, Camaro or Mustang.
Seriously, it's like an eight legged battle mount. It can climb walls like usual, and pressing space will make it do the jump attack it used to try on you every lonely Minecraft night. Oh, yeah, you can fully control it. Unlike pigs. And it's still cooler than a horse.
If you're running around at night and see a random spider running around with a saddle, it's probably yours. Spiders don't naturally spawn with saddles- Endermen can't put saddles on them, and villagers JUST NOW figured out how to work a door. I don't think a villager put that saddle on it, so it must be yours.
The spider will still take damage during battle, including fall damage, and - like the pig - the saddle is gone when it's dead.
This also eliminates the need for an additional model for the horse, but still takes care of the need for quick land transportation.

Great idea...I can't think of a way to make this better. I only wish spiders didn't smush their heads into a wall while climbing, they need a climbing animation.
Epic idea, I'd love to show those skeletons who's boss.

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...
I am down with this idea, the taming and ridding of spiders is a must. I see SMP servers hosting Spider Jockey races, betting currency and diamonds on seven eye! HECK YES!
Sweet! Lovin' the feedback here.
A few things to address:
There should be a skin change after you tame the spider.
I agree. +1 on this. Perhaps the eyes would change to blue or purple or green? Practically any color but red will work great.
They should follow you after you put the saddle on them.
+1 again- something I totally overlooked. I'd hate to have my new spider friend run away after I tame him. He won't follow you very closely, and he'll usually stay near the area you dismounted him- no further than a chunk at most. If you hold out some nether wart he can come to you- kinda like a spider summon. If you really want you can make a spider garage at your house for him.
Your spider will never run around and desert you. He will never make you cry, and never tell a lie and hurt you.
How do you gauge the damage of your eight legged steed?
The eyes could gradually start turning to more of a dark-grey color to show its damage. All of this eye color changing is easily done by changing the spider's eye texture into a white one and then color blended.
Would my tamed and saddled battle buddy turn hostile at night?
Negative. Once you tame him, he's passive. Once you put the saddle on him, he will defend you.
How do I heal my arachnid sidekick?
and
Shouldn't it attack enemies for you while you're not riding it, at least after you put the saddle on it?
I've got an idea here.
Your fully tamed and saddled spider will defend you in times of need. If he's really far away while you're being attacked, he could just teleport closer to your position, like a wolf. Every time he deals damage to an enemy, that amount of damage will be added to his health.
Alternatively, you could feed him drops from hostile mobs, like bones or zombie meat. Even gunpowder. But not arrows. Don't feed him arrows. You'll hurt his feelings. And his insides.
I hate to bump such an old topic, but with the recent addition of horses, I'm quite disappointed. I personally find spiders much more appealing than horses. If anything, horses are quite apalling.
So what to do?
Make a list of why spiders are way more badass of a mount than horses:
1-- They aren't cliche.
2-- They can climb walls.
3-- They've got more eyes.
4-- They've got more legs.
5-- They can walk sideways and backwards and not look totally stupid.
6-- "Seven Eye" is the sort of name that can't be applied to a horse. (Thank you, mbergstrom. When this is implemented, I will definitely name mine Seven Eye.)
7-- Their number of eyes and legs is equal, just like humans, and are therefore more trustworthy.
8-- Nobody wants to fight a dude mounted on a spider.
That's eight legseyes reasons to ride spiders instead.
Now, with the horses and even pigs being viable mounts, this does give me an idea or two:
Armored spiders. Spiders are willing to wear whatever helmet or chestplate you give them. The chestplate would cover their thorax, part of their abdomen and a portion of their front legs. Helmets, obviously would go on their head.
Spiders would not be able to carry anything for you. And they cannot be bred with horses to make mules.
Multiple tamed spiders in the same area would get aggressive toward eachother. They get jealous.
Spiders -tamed and untamed - should shoot web into the ground before they jump. If they miss a jump or get hit off a cliff, they'd clamp on the string with their spinnerets and just hang there above the ground just below the spot they webbed. It's much simpler than it sounds and real spiders do this exact same thing. I can imagine people missing jumps on their newly tamed spiders and hurting the poor things with fall damage. We can't have that.

Let your anger be as a monkey in a piñata... hiding amongst the candy... hoping the kids don't break through with the stick!
We are what we eat and we are who we meet. These are not mutually exclusive.
