My friend was building a barn, and he wanted to have hay on the floor, but wheat didn't look right, and kept getting stomped out by the animals. Instead, we though that maybe you should be able to craft Hay Bales. It would be crafted with 3 wheat on top, three string in the middle, and 3 more wheat on the bottom. This would make maybe 4 hay bales. What do you guys think?
EDIT: I suppose it would also be cool if it was an automatic feeding block for farm animals. Perhaps mobs close enough would go towards it and breed without you having to give them wheat. (This edit from the suggestions following the original post.)

A yes for the asthetics so far... but it needs a practical use in order to be implemented.
I argue that it doesn't.
Aesthetic hay bale blocks could make for some nice thatched roofing in village type settings.
Though it could do a number of cool things, if it actually had to. Feeding and breeding might not work out that well as you'll find that your farm animals would run rampant. Unless right-clicking opened up a GUI where you could fill the bale with wheat and it would only feed that many times, serving as an aesthetic block when empty.
It could also attract barn mobs on the same level solely to keep them from the gates. That's a nice useful use.
...They could reduce fall damage to half when you land on them from a high place.
...Or they could be combined with clay to make cob.
...They could also be used as an alternative to dirt in certain farms... Say you put your water source blocks underneath the blocks instead of adjacent to them. The bale blocks would still be considered hydrated while dirt wouldn't.

Endless possibilities.
I am Darkarma and I approve this message... All of it. Especially the part where the bales act as wheat containers.

Better, I think, to make it essentially a "wheat/grass block," same as for other materials (iron, gold, lapis lazuli, etc.), or for fewer resources, the 2x2 "brick" method—after all, that's all a hay bale really is.
Hay bales would be a great aesthetic block, let alone allow a person to store large amount of wheat in a single block. (Much like gold and iron blocks do for their ingots.)
But the pure aesthetic quality is all I would expect from them.
This. It should only happen when you're within so many chunks, too. It would be terrible to have the game crash every time you return to your base because there are over four hundred pigs in your barn.
