Imagine if Minecraft expanded from the endless possibilities of land to sea...
1. Ships - By filling up the Crafting Table with Boats players could create a Ship. This new form of transportation would work much smoother (unlike the current state of Boats) and be capable of holding up to ten players. There would be five cannons on each side of the Ship and a steering wheel for the captain. The bottom deck would be supplied with Chests containing Cannon Balls which can be loaded into cannons. Cannons would be fired by placing any type of pressure plate down in front of them and activating it. In order to make a Ship, a Dock would have to be found.
2. Docks - Found at the edge of land on Beaches (explained later), Docks would be large areas made out of Wooden Planks which would have space for up to three Ships to be placed (each in their own separate section) and allow for sailing to occur. To exit a Ship in another location, Docks would not be required. You'd simply have to abandon ship until returning or not returning for that matter.
3. Squid Reworking - This currently neglected mob would have much more of a purpose. Squids would stay deep in the ocean until night. When it becomes night, Squids would swim very close to the surface, possibly pulling under other players and other players' Boats if they aren't careful, therefore, making the ocean dangerous at night and making Ships more of a privilege.
4. Fish & Trenches - The addition of actual visible fish would be added. Fish would come in many shapes, sizes, and colors but would all be the same worth for the time being. This would add more attractiveness to the currently bland ocean. As for Trenches, they'd be located deep under the sea and be very dark. Hostile Fish would be located within them and Chests filled with valuable rewards would be stored at their bottoms. Scuba Gear would be required to explore them due to the fact that you'd run out of oxygen by the time you reached one.
5. Scuba Gear - Scuba Gear cannot be broken but can be damaged. If damaged, Scuba Gear will need to be repaired in a Furnace. It'll be as durable as a full set of Diamond armor. As for where its dropped, Scuba Gear can be found by killing Crabs on a rare occasion.
6. Beaches - This new biome would be populated with Crabs, a new passive mob that would only become hostile when provoked. Upon killing Crabs, Crab Meat would be dropped and used for food, with a slight chance of Scuba Gear being dropped instead. Shells can also be found buried under Beaches and can be dug up with any type of Shovel. The purpose of Shells will be explained later.
7. Mermaids & Crabs - Yes, I know this might sound ridiculous but keep on reading...then maybe you'll be interested. Mermaids would lay on randomly generated rocks made out of Stone above the ocean and sing out to the player (picture non-lethal Sirens). When discovered, Mermaids will want several Shells to decorate their rocks with. If enough Shells are given (depends on the size of the rock, varying from fifteen, thirty, or forty-five), the Mermaid will award you with Sea Powder, a special item that allows you to tame a Crab. Once tamed, Crabs will become Enchanted Crabs, having the colors of a Mermaid's scales, and fight alongside you, scaring off Hostile Fish (like Ocelots and Cats scaring off Creepers). What makes them unique is the fact that they can swim underwater unlike the current tamable mobs. Upon being attacked, a Mermaid will flee into the water, permanently abandoning its rock. By removing a block from a Mermaid's rock, the result will be the same.
8. Sunken Ships - Also located underwater, Sunken Ships may contain supplies for your Ship (Cannon Balls) and other rare items. They would be surrounded by lethal Squids, inside and out, guarding the loot.

I don't like the Kraken idea or the squid reworking idea at all. Also, I don't really like the Mermaid idea to. Other than that the ideas in this thread are great.
This may be the 100th Million post about Oceans. If Notch or Jeb wanted to do something about it, they would have already.
Did you ever think that they might have been working on other content (...such as the weekly snapshots, Ocelots, Cats, etc.)? Besides the fact that the numerical value of the theme of my suggestion is "100 Million", did you like any of the ideas or not? Maybe if enough people liked some of them and forwarded this post to Jeb he'd be much more encouraged to add it!
Like I said kiddo, there has been thousands of threads like such before you. I can assure you, much more complex and thought-out than this one. Nothing gets done. The honest truth is, a suggestion is put into the Forums, and if it makes it into 'In-Game Worthy' they deny it anyways, because it is not Jeb or Notch's original Idea, thus they would have to give credit to who ever came up with it. Why do you think they have not added Sharks? Or simply any small animals that can make the game much more wonderful.
Was a nice thread regardless.
I stopped using the MCF for about half a year now. It's rather pointless because nothing gets heard. Just a big collaboration of worthless thoughts that are only good to make my day, or just for pointless entertainment and browsing. That's why I am on right now. Nice to always come and see what the people have to say. Sorry for being so negative. <3
Personally I like the ships, less like the paper boats that are in already.
Plus, this allows for more videos of the 'I'm On a Boat' in Minecraft.
Just picture your boat, it crashed and now it's nothing but sticks and wood...
My ship has yet to yield to the desert that I am currently sailing through...
Yes.

I'd hope that they wouldn't have a "Suggestions" section of the Forums if they weren't going to base some of their own ideas off of the suggestions located there. Even if they don't add the content, they could add something similar from the idea. If you think about it, we're posting it in the "Suggestions" section and giving our idea out to the online world...Mojang can do whatever they want with it within reason. Either way, I'm glad you liked it and I appreciate your feedback.
The ocean does need some "cleaning" up. I think your ideas are pretty clever and these would be bold additions to the game. However, remember the game's structure: simplicity. Minecraft has come a long way with advances, but some parts of the game are lacking, such as the ocean. My favorite is the variety of fishes and where you could actually see them. Also, if they included a coral reef, the ocean would be beautiful.
I like 4, 6 and 8, hate everything else. I like the idea of scuba gear, but I will never support a kraken in Minecraft. The docks part makes no sense, why would you post that? It's like posting "A house, a place you can live and store items in."
This thread has been dead for a while so I figured I'd change some of my ideas due to my own opinions and popular demand. Hopefully the revamped ideas will be more pleasing!
Copy spider AI. Hostile at night or low light levels (and it is rather dark in deep water) and when they are hostile they swim upward instead of downward as they usually do and can swim much faster when a player is spotted. They will also swarm towards boats and swimming players, grabbing them and pulling them under.
Squids would have a fairly weak attack, but they would hold you under water until you drown.

Cool that you did, though.
